Obama Invites Us To Write The Platform...And Limbaugh Wants In

Earlier this week, Barack Obama invited us all to be a part of writing the Democratic party platform for the convention. From his e-mail:

Help shape the Democratic Party's Platform for ChangeEvery four years, the Democratic Party assembles a platform that outlines the party's position on a number of issues.

Traditionally, the drafting of the platform is not open to ordinary people.

This year, that's going to change.

For two weeks in July, people all across America will hold Platform Meetings in their own communities to discuss the issues and share their input. The outcome of these meetings will be reviewed by the Drafting Committee as it creates the final Platform.

No political experience is required. Your thoughts and experiences are all that matter, and they will shape a platform that -- like this campaign -- is owned by the people.

The platform events will be held from July 19-27 and you can sign up to attend or host one HERE.

Now, who knows what the actual practical result will come out of these platform meetings (if people overwhelmingly decide no telecom immunity should be a part of the platform, will that make it so? Doubtful.) But what Barack is doing is sending a couple of messages: one that he's been stressing all throughout the primary, namely that "this election is about you" and another that puts him in direct conflict with John McCain: that Barack Obama is in touch, listening to the American people. Hell, the events themselves are called "Listening To America" events. So on those levels alone, this is an excellent idea and a great way to continue to activate Obama's list in movement and party building rather than merely exploiting it for fundraising.

What's hilarious, though, is that Rush Limbaugh has decided to use these events as the basis for phase 2 of Operation Chaos. His grand plan is to have his minions "infiltrate" the events but just one glance at his call to action reveals just truly how deeply he, and the right overall, just don't get it.

"You will be allowed to sit in the same room as elitist Democrat operatives to craft the Democrat party platform," Limbaugh told his audience - estimated by industry trade magazine "Talkers" to exceed 14 million listeners a week.

"In coming days, we will tell you exactly how you can participate in writing the Democrat party platform, at the request of the Most Merciful Lord Barack Obama."

"Elitist Democrat operatives." I would love some dittoheads to go to one of these meetings and see all the so-called "operatives" gathered in a room. They really can't conceive of the basic notion of bottom-up democracy or people-powered politics; it simply does not compute. And the fact that they consider non-Democrats attending these events as some sort of infiltration demonstrates even further the extent to which they just don't get Obama or our party under his leadership.

From Michael Yaki, National Platform Director, via e-mail:

"We'd like to thank Rush Limbaugh for publicizing the 'Listening to America' events and extend an open invitation to him and his listeners to attend.  The Democratic Party is not afraid to listen to the wide array of views the American people have on the issues they care about - that is what makes our nation strong. People across the country - of all political persuasions - are tired of business as usual in Washington and people like Limbaugh who are more concerned with scoring political points than changing the direction of our country.  Unlike John McCain and the Republican Party, Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee are encouraging Americans across the country to get involved and make their voices heard.

"If Limbaugh's dittoheads want to join other Americans, united in their belief that their voices should be heard in Washington, talking about their hopes, dreams, and concerns in their living rooms, community centers, and churches, and reporting back on these discussions to the Platform Drafting Committee, then they're welcome to join one of the 655 events in 47 states organized in just 24 hours."

Pwned.

I've got some nice folding chairs

and a flip chart ready to go.   Oh, and probably both blue and red markers to record comments.  Does that make me an elitist Democratic operative?   Cool.   Of course, it will be hard to keep track of all those operatives what with the crowd of regular voters, community-level activists and local experts who will be coming to these events.  Maybe we should have nametags.

Yaki's response was perfect

I would love to see Limbaugh's listeners showing up at those events... they'd be completely miserable throughout the whole thing, waste a few hours of their lives, and ultimately feel like they actually accomplished something.  It's a win-win.

lol so true

Wouldn't it be ironic if the experience ended up actually converting some dittoheads? Make them wonder "Why doesn't MY candidate do something like this?"

I just don't see the logic of this

The reason Operation Chaos worked (if it did) was that nobody could tell who was and was not a dittohead. Whereas if they have to speak, it all falls apart.

Sure, they can back silly suggestions, but those will be removed at a higher level, and amending the party platform to "No Blacks Allowed" is hardly going to be a productive use of their time.

Hey Todd!!

Excellent use of "pwned"

I think the dittoheads will explode when they observe people discussing policy instead of finding ways to cheat on their taxes

This is great

Operation Chaos DID work... to increase Democratic registrations, donations to Democratic candidates, media attention for Democrats and electoral excitement for Democrats.

It also managed to reduce enthusiasm for the Republican primaries and embarass their presumptive nominee by letting Ron Paul steal delegates at the state conventions.

It doesn't surprise me that Limbaugh would like to continue his phoenominal success in helping the Democratic party sweep the 2008 election; after all, if the Democrats are an unquestioned majority, then suddenly he's the underdog resistance, and perhaps his ratings will go up again.

I heartily welcome Mr. Limbaugh with open arms.

Operation Depends -- Phase 2

I would love some dittoheads to go to one of these meetings

Does Barf Douchebag really think the senile old farts and crones who hang on his every bombastic syllable are going to drag themselves away from their Lay-Z-Boys and reruns of "Golden Girls" to infilitrate and disrupt meetings of terrifying, activist, "YOUNG PEOPLE?"

Rush is a total coward

Ya ever notice Limbaugh himself never really journeys out and puts HIMSELF in an open firing line situation? Or Hannity either?

I think, when O'Reilly has done it, (and he doesn't anymore) he came off as a no-nothing wind bag with a bad temper.

I think these clowns ONLY feel comfortable when they have the dump switch, and control of the topics. Only on their own terms, their own turf.

The problem is, what they want is thier ditto heads throwing a "Harriet" in the back of the room, screaming something about "taking our bibles and guns" or "letting the terrorist teach in our schools" or some inane statement, and they have to be escorted out.

Clips for the FAUX new hour.

They know, if their ditto head actually have to either ask a question or answer one, once the talking points run out, they have nothing to say.

Just like their gutless leader, Rush.

Oh Oh, I have one!

Add this to the party platform:

Stand firm against FISA legislation which strips away citizens' 4th amendment rights.

Oops!  Never mind...Do we really think Obama will support anything in the party platform?  Most likely he will just do whatever is politically expedient.  That's his record.

This is actually a really cool idea...

I love the tradition of the party platform and you know if Limbaugh doesn't like it must be good.

Well in case anyone is interested, here is a great diary on the history of party platforms written by Meteor Blades over at Daily Kos(back in Feb.):

Re: Obama Invites Us To Write The Platform...And L

During the primary season Rush said "if he can't beat Hillary theres no way he'll beat Obama"... referring to possible McCain match ups against Clinton or Obama. See Rush really does know the score and sometimes lets it slip.

I think these meetings are pretty cynical

Gah, I've sat at many meetings with grassroots Democrats, and I can tell you: if anybody needs to be kept away from decisions about the Democratic platform, it's these people.

Seriously, if they had their say, rainbow unicorns would be installed in every community and run giant hamster wheels to produce electricity... and it would go downhill from there.

Of course, Barack Obama knows this. This is nothing but pure show - the illusion of participation. Maybe Rush Limbaugh is dumb enough to fall for it, but who else is? Yes, it might be a fun place to go to find a date, but the impact on the Democratic platform from all these meetings will be zero. (Normal people do have input into platform decisions, but that's in tightly supervised focus groups administered by highly trained psychologists.)

OK, so you might agree but still think that these meetings are harmless, and in a way they are. But the gesture is cynical. It's like the Farside in which Satan decides to put a suggestion box in hell, and then laughs as he reads the little notes. Now Barack Obama is doing it too.
