Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

Hillary Clinton has taken the stage to speak to her supporters in NYC.

Update [2008-6-3 21:50:2 by Todd Beeton]:Unlike other election night speeches, Clinton began tonight by speaking very graciously of Senator Obama and his supporters, yet the rhetoric of this speech sounds nothing even approaching a concession. In fact, it seems rather ordinary, as though this isn't the last speech of its kind.

Hmm, now she's turning up the heat a bit:

"I understand that a lot of people are asking what does Hillary want? I want to end the war in Iraq, I want to turn this economy around, I want healthcare for every American and...I want every person who voted for me to be respected and heard."

Update [2008-6-3 21:50:2 by Todd Beeton]:"Denver! Denver!" Josh is at the event but apparently internet keeps going in and out. It is apparently in a basement. Brilliant.

Update [2008-6-3 21:50:2 by Todd Beeton]:"Where do we go from here? This has been a long campaign and I will be making no decisions tonight."

Let's not expect Hillary to count a state that goes to Obama at this stage of the game. please.

that would be too unpredictable for me to stand. Obama states aren't really states at all. well, more like a state of mind then a physical state of being.

Maybe she's discounting Montana results since the nomination is sealed with those few remaining delegates in South Dakota.  It would have been much on her mind, I'm guessing.

The first 10 minutes don't sound like a concession speech. It sounds like a victory lap, which is odd, considering the whole "Obama wins the nomination" banner on the bottom of the screen...

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

Interesting way to gun for the VP slot.  She's selling her achievements to put the pressure on Obama.

by yitbos96bb 2008-06-03 05:41PM | 0 recs
Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

"I got more votes than you" is an odd choice to lead into a "I want to be VP" discussion. The thanks to the Obama camp was a nice touch, and she's doing well attacking the current administration for not being there, etc.

She does sound nice, she's giving a very good speech, it's just much more "Look how well I did" than I expected.

And that "I want my 18 million voters to be heard" line hopefully will be touched on later. Otherwise it sounds like she doesn't believe Obama would listen to them.

Same with that "16 years" mention. Not a shot, just a nudge, but it's an odd time when I wasn't expecting her to nudge.

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

It is, rather.  But give it time, she may need a little while to let things wind down.  And she may think she's running for VP now, who knows?  It must be a feeling outside of our experience to have been giving speech after speech to enthusiastic crowds and still have lost by a narrow margin.  I think her heart is in the right place.

I think it'll still be gracious in the end

Her argument seems to be not to rile up bitterness over votes not being counted.  She just suggested that, now, the votes WERE counted because they fought.  I think it's more thanking her supporters for their efforts, and angling for the VP spot.

by BishopRook 2008-06-03 05:43PM | 0 recs
Re: I think it'll still be gracious in the end

I've been reading the opposite myself..."every vote is a prayer", "I see you" -- lots of subtle imagery.

Now the crowd is chanting "Denver!  Denver!"

...

This hasn't been particularly unifying so far...

by randomscientist 2008-06-03 05:49PM | 0 recs
Re: I think it'll still be gracious in the end

In the end...

It wasn't conciliatory, but it was more gracious than usual.

She pretty much declared victory in Michigan and Florida--said that the votes WERE counted now, thanks to their efforts.  She gave only a single reference to the "swing states we need to win"...  And most of her points were all important Democratic policy ideals that she and Obama share.

She also made a point of adding that the campaign was "never about her"--I beg to differ, but she said it--which to me suggests she's very, very carefully preparing her supporters for an announcement that she's endorsing Obama.  Reminding them that on policy, she and Obama are two peas in a pod while McCain is a lunatic.

She needed to keep the rhetoric fresh and not seem too valedictory because she still needs some leverage with Obama when they meet privately tomorrow.  I expect that the meeting tomorrow will be followed by a joint appearance, where she will announce her endorsement of him and he will announce a few things:

1) Clinton will be part of his administration in some way, as VP or a cabinet member

  1. After careful consideration, he's adopting Clinton's proposal on healthcare
  2. Obama and Clinton will both petition the DNC to seat the MI and FL delegations at full strength rather than half strength

Obviously this is all a guess on my part, we'll see how accurate it turns out to be.

I respect Clinton voters, to be sure. I probably would have been one myself if Obama wasn't from my home state.  But being on the losing side of a close political fight isn't some special, privileged position that noone else has ever been in.

Re: Denver bound...ugh

Just to respond to my own comment.

Obama can't thank Hillary for her endorsement, which would've been a fantastic unifying moment.

Obama can declare victory, but then you've really got an "it's over" versus "it's not over" war going on that will make her supporters feel ignored.

Her partisans will, of course, say to fight to Denver. They're her supporters, by definition, they support her!

Like CNN's talking heads, I'm kind of confused because, even if she wasn't going to concede, you don't say "I should have won and I'm hanging around!" Especially when you had a tailor-made dagger-in-the-GOP moment with Obama in Minnesota.

Instead, he'll have a good moment and the rest of the impact waits until her eventual concession.

I'm... flabbergasted.

He runs the story, then the next day Hoover's appointed for life and a press secretary passes along the message "Tell Ben Bradlee 'F#@#$ you'"

I think the lack of concession tonight is just to make the AP look bad. Which it does.

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

I wish Hillary Clinton herself could be as gracious in defeat as many of her supporters here have been. (Bobswern - whodathunkit?!?!)

She could have gone out a hero tonight, and it ain't happening. Sad. Truly sad.

Sounds valedictory now

Thanking her supporters. Will concede in a private setting and not let her supporters down in public. Will work for the Party and the country.

I'm not worried...

...she didn't say that she's resigning but she didn't bring up the convention.  It's over.

The Denver chant and the woman who screamed, "Can't vote for Obama," worries me, but it's still early in the process.

Obama will be "we"

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

It was ever thus.  The more things change the more they remain the same.  That's why he won and she didn't and I don't think she understands that.  Her supporters seem to want a strong, charismatic leader who they can elect and then turn their attention elsewhere, confident she is fighting for them.

Obama supporters want to be invited to join the process and continue to participate through the election and beyond.  That's the change we can believe in, 'cuz we're going to be around for it every step of the way.

This has been a pretty good speech, overall

And chill a bit, fellow Obamans. Read between the lines, and think about what she didn't say.

Re: This has been a pretty good speech, overall

"Obama, receiving the necessary delegates to secure the nomination"

That's what she didn't say.

And that scares the bejesus out of me.

It was a great speech, just not a concession speech.

Judging from all the commentary, I am surprised that the Obama camp didn't hire Arriana Huffington to cross the sky and write 'SUrrender Hillary' in broom smoke.

Not exactly a 'unity' message but that was genuinely funny.

Indeed. It's quite clear that

there's little interest here in healing.  A handful of Obama supporters have been gracious.  A handful.

by aggieric 2008-06-03 06:05PM | 0 recs
Re: Indeed. It's quite clear that

And can you say that about Obama himself after his speech tonight?

by Beekeeper 2008-06-03 06:59PM | 0 recs
Re: Indeed. It's quite clear that

We can SEE that the Obama supporters and the pundits wanted Hillary to crawl off into exile.  When she didn't simply curl up and cave in, as they wished, they decided to hold a public verbal stoning of her.

The rhetoric here last evening was horrible considering the support of Clinton's voters will be needed in the GE.  On CNN, the pundits were simply too caught up in verbally trashing Hillary that they couldn't even acknowledge the success of Obama themselves.  THEY made sure it was not "Obama's night', but rather  'trashing Hillary' night.

Why?  What about that speech makes you proud?  And I ask this with all seriousness, not as Snark.  Please help me to understand.

by yitbos96bb 2008-06-03 06:08PM | 0 recs
Re: I'll be brief

She touched on everything that I support her on. I was proud of what she said about how she wants her supporters respected, heard, and to be seen. She was strong. She acknowledged Barack and said she admired him, and she conducted  herself with dignity.

I know you probably would have liked her to come out and said, "i concede and support Sen Obama' but she is really proud to the point where I cant even imagine her conceding. I think we all know its over, especially Hillary, but I dont expect a concession. She aint the concession type, and while you might want it, you certainly dont need it to understand its over.

by alyssa chaos 2008-06-03 07:41PM | 0 recs
My concern

with this speech is that I don't think it even made the first steps towards unity.

I'm not among those that somehow "needed" a concession speech, but to use a word someone used upthread, I expected something a little more valedictory.

I suppose there's no good time or place to concede - many of her supporters are going to be pissed when she does (including at her - there was some creeping vitriol in certain quarters today when the news broke about accepting the VP spot).... but it's like a band-aid, I think tonight was probably the best night to rip it off.

Don't get me wrong - she spoke about a lot of important issues, but this is quite likely her last speech (though I assume she gets a primetime convention slot?) that's going to draw such a big audience and get the press it will get.

MANDATE? BY UNDERMINING THE NOMINEE BY SAYING HE DIDN'T REALLY WIN?

YOU HAVE A WEIRD SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT.

SHE RAN. SHE MISCALCULATED. SHE LOST.

SHE NEEDS TO CONCEDE.

IT'S UP TO OBAMA TO INVITE HER TO BE VP.

DO YOU INVITE YOURSELF TO OTHER PEOPLES' PARTIES?

NO YOU WAIT TO BE INVITED OR YOU DON'T GO!

SHAME ON HER!

Actually, it mandates the opposite. She isn't giving up. How could Obama allow her on the ticket? She would be a huge drag. I suspect she won't be able to keep her senate seat after this tawdry performance.

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

I am very disappointed in Hillary tonight. If the senior Dems of the Party don't approach her and tell her to unify,  I'm going to switch from Dem to independent. And, I'm going to tell people the switch is because of Hillary.  I can still vote for Obama in the G.E. but I will ditch my Dem party affiliation because of her.  Way to unify Hillary.

His audience was way classier over hers when it came to mentioning the opponent.

She loses points and good will.

He's a rock star, she's bitter and divisive.
I voted for her in CA, but now I'm sorry I did.  I'm  done with her.

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

I voted for her in AZ and when she turned negative I was outta there.

She had to stick a shiv in him tonight. She couldn't be gracious.

She could have worked everything through behind the scene and unified the party in one spectacular, unbelievably gracious stroke.

She chose the low road.

Sad.

Its not the concession, its the unification, so dumbarses that think its right to vote McCain understand what is at stake.  That she didn't explain that, is why she fails us all.

Re: Hillary Clinton Speech Thread

Hillary has done herself no favors.

She has tried to diminish the actual candidate, Obama, attempted to keep divisions within the party alive, and shown herself to be a selfish, graceless and not very truthful person.

I wonder if she even realizes that this will come back to haunt her in the future as she realizes just how much many in the party are unhappy with her actions.

Typical of her whole campaign, and one of the big reasons it was a losing one.
