April Fundraising: Obama $31m, Clinton $22m, McCain $18m

We'll have the numbers for the parties' campaign committees up tomorrow, but for now here are brief sketches of the numbers from the Presidential candidates:

Barack Obama
$31.3 million in primary money, more than half of which came in contributions of $25 or less.

Hillary Clinton
$22 million, including $10 million in the 24 hours following the Pennsylvania primary.

John McCain
$18 million. It is unclear whether this is in just primary money or also includes general election money.

You can click each link above for more information, but that gives a fairly good sketch of the topline facts. We'll have voting totals out of Oregon starting as soon as the top of the hour, so stay tuned...

I suspect that there is a good explanation for this. I suspect that the $9.5 million at the end of the month actually came in after the PA primary but didn't get caged because of the volume.

However, after the Bosnia sniper fire story, Clinton needs to be extra careful about fueling a narrative that she has only a passing acquaintance with the truth. She needs to clean up this story within 24 hours.

So basically, after her $20 million in debt, Hillary only had $2 million to spend for the entire month of April?

Oh yeah, those kind of fundraising numbers will sustain her fight all the way to the floor in August!

When all this is said and done

We are all going to look back and be gobsmacked at the amounts our two candidates raised for a freakin primary!!!

I mean my god?! They raised, what, a half a BILLION dollars almost? I just cant get over it.

It just goes to show we had two (well a whole field) of amazing candidates to choose from and the republicans have squat. Its a shame we cant morph our two together into an indestructible republican crushing machine.

I cant wait to see what we raise for the general. McCain is so toast.

I hate to nit-pick, but one shouldn't confuse half of Obama's fund raising total coming from $25 donations with half of the donations being $25 or less. I'm pretty sure it's the latter here.

So the bottom line is, Hillary raised enough money to pay back her $11.5 million in loans (plus interest mind you). Thank god. I was afraid that the Clinton net worth was going to dip below $100 million. Thank god there are enough "good hardworking white Americans" and children selling their bikes to keep the Clintons liquid. I'm just glad she was able to repay herself.

John McCain has accepted public funding for the general election, so my understanding is he cannot accept general election contributions. He will have to give them back. Although they could be accepting them to pad his total and then quietly returning the money.

I think you're wrong. McCain used the qualification of matching funds to secure a loan for the primary, which should, according to the law he helped write, bind him to limiting his spending in the primary (which lasts until the RNC convention, I think). He is not breakin the law.

I don't believe he has accepted matching funds, although he has asked Obama to reiterate a commitment to doing so if McCain accepts them (which is McCains way to trying to get Obama to throw away a huge fundraising advantage, of course).

I never said he was breaking the law. I could definitely be wrong on the FEC code, but he HAS accepted public funds for the general election:

The question is at what point does he have to return the general election money he has raised and can he still accept general election money and return it at another time. My understanding is that he does not have to return that money until the convention.

Are Obama fans going to end up funding her?

On Friday, Barack Obama publicly raised the possibility of helping Hillary Clinton pay off more than $25 million in debts, including the $11.42 million she loaned her own campaign to keep it afloat in recent months.

"Historically after a campaign is done and you want to unify the party, particularly when you've had a strong opponent, you want to make sure you're putting that opponent in a strong position so that they can work to win an election in November. So, obviously, I would want to have a broad range of discussions with Senator Clinton about how I could make her feel good about
