What's going on tonight?

Re: Open Thread

Namuch.  One of my kittens has apparently decided my 2-liter bottle of diet coke is her personal nemesis and has set about to destroy it, fruitlessly.

I wonder if I should get to bed early tonight, since I know I'm going to be up late tomorrow night.  Does anybody else have primary-watching parties with your friends?

...Or do you think maybe I should seek some professional help?

Re: Open Thread

Hi Todd! I heard you're going to be in Puerto Rico. You'll love it. The people are great and they love making "gringos" feel at home. If you like rum I suggest Don Q. Nobody likes Bacardi in P.R.

Don't forget to hit the beach. It is a must.

Nothing to really crow about.

Hillary cited Karl Rove about her electability?

Surely the bottom of her barrel has finally been scraped.

Never mind that his prediction of a big GOP win in 2006 was DEAD wrong.

I took a few photos this week

these are two of my favorites:

A Veery, which hung out for some time while I photographed it:

A Baltimore Oriole, which scared a hummingbird off right before landing on (and drinking from) this feeder:

Damn. Forgot one

A yellow warbler:

Re: Damn. Forgot one

You took those?  That's very impressive, excellent shots.

Re: Damn. Forgot one

Thanks!

I've been doing bird photography for a long time now.  I seem to be really getting the hang of it, but these three photos are kind of spectacular, even by my standards.  The Yellow Warbler landed right by my car so I had to zoom out to get it :)

The Veery was just luck: it jumped out and just hung out on a branch for awhile so I had plenty of chances.  It also moved directly into one of the few sunlight spots.

The Oriole was fun because I managed to call it in by whistling at the right pitches.

Why do you hate hummingbirds?

Fabulous!

I've been thinking about taking up birdwatching when I retire.  Seems like a fun excuse for travel and tromping around in the wilderness.

Re: Damn. Forgot one

There are two ruby throated humming birds at my feeder right now, I've seen up to 7. The have hummingbird dogfights. I have no idea if it's courtship or agression. Maybe my feeder is a hummingbird singles bar.

Re: Damn. Forgot one

Beautiful shots. I was getting some beautiful birds last summer and well into the winter, Orioles or grosbeaks, I think, but I had to take the feeders down because of bears.

LGBs are better than LGF

Thanks for the nice photos

Our resident Oriole has returned to the maple outside the kitchen window.

It's Bobolink madness on the ridge pasture - my personal favorites.

I like winter birding, but it's hard to beat bird breeding season in Driftless Wisconsin.

Re: Damn. Forgot one

Very nice shots.  I love bird-watching, my favourites are the Spangled Drongos, which summer and breed here in Northern NSW.  They are amazingly agile fliers and always very active during daylight.  It is always the first sign of spring when they arrive.  It's winter here now and they have all flown back to the highlands of Papua New Guinea with their new young.  I didn't take the picture, not as gifted as you.

Very nice oriole

there was one eating oranges we put out at my parents farm this weekend.  They are so pretty.

not a lot, same old tizzies being thrown by the usual suspects in their "righteous" anger

Re: Open Thread

I refuse to accept THIS!!  CAN'T YOU SEE BY MY ALL CAPS THAT I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT?

Oh wait, I thought you were talking about "self-righteous" anger, which I have a lot of.

Ummm, is it bedtime yet?

In evil MSNBC related news

Olbermann reported that Rachel Maddow's fill in for him on friday was the top-rated cable news show all day long.  This bodes well for her getting her own show, which I would love.

by semiquaver 2008-05-19 06:39PM | 0 recs
The format for this is kind of there already

for her to take over a show as the first hour of her radio show is Race to the White House which logcially will be suspended once we have the presidental election.  Rachel gets that hour and can use the show as part of her AAR broadcast (akin to what Imus did before he got canned).

by Student Guy 2008-05-19 06:43PM | 0 recs
But wouldn't it be great if she

was the WH press secretary?  Who better than Rachel?

WH Press Secretary...

... seems like a soul-crushing job no matter who you're serving.

by Homebrewer 2008-05-19 06:54PM | 0 recs
Re: But wouldn't it be great if she

I think CJ would be better than Rachael Maddow, but only slightly.  And Maddow has the distinction of being nonfictional.

Re: The format for this is kind of there already
Heard her on NPR this weekend ("On the Media"?). Her goal is to have a show on MSNBC, which is why she puts up with "dresssing like a Senator" on KO's show.

Red Sox No-Hitter

Here's to Jon Lester throwing a no-hitter after coming back from cancer a few years ago!  I wasn't following the game, but heard the cheers over the radio afterwards.  He sounds like a class act.

lots of buzz here about Obama coming back

to Iowa tomorrow night. My family is heading to Omaha for an overnight visit, but I ran into at least five people today who plan to go down to the rally. Should be huge.

This is what's going on...

All the divisive campaigning is causing stuff like this...

Cynthia Ruccia, 55, a sales director for Mary Kay cosmetics in Columbus, Ohio, is organizing a group, Clinton Supporters Count Too, of mostly women in swing states who plan to campaign against Mr. Obama in November. "We, the most loyal constituency, are being told to sit down, shut up and get to the back of the bus," she said.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/19/us/pol itics/19women.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2 &hp

OK, so here's the deal, these women would rather put John McCain in the WH and deal with his appointing up to three new justices on the SC.  It's crazy talk like this that scares me.  People are getting irrational about this primary race.

Time to bring this to an end and do a group hug!

Re: This is what's going on...

Here's whats going on....Republican women (there are such things I hear) going back to papa after their Hillary joy ride.

Re: I stopped worrying about it

"The worst thing that ever happened to this party was for a woman and a black man to square off in a primary. Somebody's going to lose and they're not going to be happy about it."

Damn, I hope you're wrong about that.  It's obviously correct as of right this minute, however.  I suppose it's up to Obama to make his case.  Based on what I've seen from him thus far, he will.

P.R.

Any new polling anywhere for Puerto Rico?  Anything?  I just wonder what's really going on there.
