Obama Leads in Oregon Among LVs and Those Who've Voted

SurveyUSA has released its final round of polling out of Oregon gauging Democratic voters' sentiments about the presidential primary going on in the state (with an all vote-by-mail system, Oregon's election day is effectively two weeks long), and the numbers look like this:

CandidateAll
Voters
Already
Voted
Likely
Voters
Obama555362
Clinton424434

The overall margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 4 percentage points, so Barack Obama's lead over Hillary Clinton in the state is statistically significant. Doing some back of the napkin math, it appears that the margin of error for the subsample of voters who have already turned in their ballots is roughly plus or minus 4.46 percentage points, meaning that Obama's lead in this category is just statistically significant as well.

Other pollsters who, to the best of my recollection, have never polled in Oregon before and thus do not necessarily have a good grasp as to how to poll such a drawn out election (or at least have the experience doing it before) show the race to be tighter, within the margin of error. However, with the pollsters who actually have a history of polling in the state (SUSA, but also national pollster Rasmussen Reports and Oregon pollster Tim Hibbits) pretty unanimous in having Obama up by a solid double-digit margin, it's hard to see this race being a tossup. What's more, although rallies are not generally the best metric for gauging support (a whole lot more voters don't go to rallies than do), the fact that Obama apparently drew 75,000 people to Waterfront Park in Portland says a lot.

Man, I kind of wish I had gotten up to Portland a day earlier...

About 4% of Metro Portland Showed Up

75,000 people attended the Portland, OR rally for Obama yesterday. The Portland metro area only has 1,876,899 people (in 2006), so 75,000 represents 4.00% of the total population in the area and about 1/5th of the population of the actual city of Portland. And, from the news reports, the crowd looked mostly white which is not surprising given that the Portland area is 88% white.

Eau Claire, Wisconsin

About 5,000 people showed up to the Eau Claire, WI rally.

Eau Claire has about 100K people... that's 5%... /Take that, Portland. /

I'm just kidding, that rally must've been amazing.  Singer doesn't need to be a full-on Obamaphile to appreciate the magnitude of something like that.

The support for this organization on MyDD is absolutely ridiculous.  No We Won't is dedicated to campaigning for anyone but Obama-- many of them say they will vote for McCain in the fall.  Why are they allowed to post this crap without any punishment?  Why are Obama supporters Rec-rights being taken away for promoting diaries that support him?  Something stinks at MyDD.

It's a post entirely consisting of a sarcastic title (likening his rally to a music concert) and an image irrelevant to the post.

That being said, what is the official reason for troll rating? I mostly TR for things like this, where people are either saying things irrelevant, using unfounded attacks or not attempting to contribute to the discussion.

Re: But what about November?

When was the last time Rove was right about anything? I seem to remember his predictions for 2006 were along the lines of "Republican clean sweep."

And since when are we afraid of him, take advice from him, or even take him seriously. I mean, really.

Re: But what about November?

Well, as we well know, everybody is entitled to their own math, but Mr. Rove is the keeper of THE math.

I'm a swing state Democrat and I have my concerns that Senator Obama is not the same candidate he was three months ago (if you're not at least a little concerned, you're not paying attention), but let's not afford Karl Rove too much say in who our nominee is.

by Crookd River Progressive 2008-05-19 11:48AM | 0 recs
Re: But what about November?

Indeed.  It is beyond me why we care what Karl Rove thinks, especially what he thinks 'in public'.  Especially in May, five months before the election.

As recent races in LA and MS have shown, we need to do a little less worrying about what the big, bad Republicans will do to our poor little nominee and go out and make our case.

Yes, BO has had a rough couple of months but so has HRC and, well, McCain hasn't exactly been doing great either.

Both BO and HRC have shown they can fight back against the smear campaigns.  We will win this election by standing up for our principles and the Dem candidates have shown they will not be defined by the Republican hatemongers this time around.

Re: But what about November?

Yawn...  Yes, Hillary does better in FL and AR... but, guess what, Obama can get to > 270 EV's  even without Ohio, Florida or Missouri.  All he needs is Kerry states + NM, NV and IA... easy targets, and the presidency is his...  He just needs to hold MI (easy task, after McCain denigrated "hard working white people" in the state during the republican primary) and PA. The map is INCREDIBLY favorable for Obama! It could easily be a total blowout if he gets any extra states!  All the following red states are in potentially play for Obama:  MS, NC, VA, GA, SC, MO, ND, AK, 1 EV from NE, and I'm sure I'm missing a few.  I'm not even including FL or OH in that list.

Re: Rasmussen

Ohio will be tougher for Obama than Hillary, that's for sure... but, if anyone can get him over the top, Strickland can.  His machine is gold in Southern Ohio.  Also, our election will be fair this year.  I certainly think he can get the less than 100K votes that Kerry missed a few years back.

by LordMike 2008-05-19 12:35PM | 0 recs

Hopefully he can work the same sort of mojo that he worked for Clinton.  That said, I don't want our fate tied to Florida or Ohio this year.

Re: But what about November?

Lovely, but what about winning in Nov.?  Here's what Karl Rove's electoral map, obtained by ABC News, shows:

http://a.abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/ McCainClintonObama051608.pdf

You mean the same Karl Rove that said this prior to the 2006 mid-term elections:

"I look at the individual races as clear-eyed as I can every single day, knowing what we are doing and knowing that we have the capacity to move the resources in if we need to do more," Rove said in a brief telephone interview from the road last week. "Incumbents are hard to defeat. Our candidates by and large have significantly more resources than they have. And we have succeeded in making these races choices between two local candidates."

Maybe we should care less about what he says and stop worrying about November. I am pretty certain any of our top-4 candidates from this election cycle would be able to beat McCain in the GE. The GOP brand is weak, and an unchallenged, free-ride McCain still struggles to break 50%.

Uprated to offset ratings abuse.

But I've thought Rove was an idiot for years. Washington was shocked, shocked at his naked audacity in breaking all the rules, and because of that he had the "success" of a bull running through a china shop. Once that novelty wore off, all we were left with was Rove the fool.

The Decemberists are one of the biggest indie rock acts out there.  And one of the most critically lauded.

And Portland has a huge indie-rock scene.  They even stole Albuquerque's biggest band, The Shins. And by stole, I mean the lead singer of the Shins hates Albuquerque with a passion.

All bus transportation, shared room accommodations and a $51 prepaid card for food will be provided to all participants. As soon as I read this

I though the same as one of the commenters: it's the street money thang. This reenforces my concern that the Clinton team was engaging in the practice in Philly.

The campaign did something similar in Dallas where they paid an organization to have AAs to stand on street corners holding Hillary signs. When the sign holders were asked about it, the folks said they didn't care, they were getting paid to do it.
