Cindy's Wealth Still Aiding The McCain Campaign

First, when the McCain campaign was on the brink of going bust last summer, Cindy helpfully provided use of her corporate jet to the campaign. Without a functional FEC to close a legal loophole, the McCain campaign got away with reimbursing only the cost of equivalent first-class tickets instead of the full charter rate, likely saving a million dollars or more.

This, despite John McCain swearing off corporate jets altogether, and claiming he wouldn't exploit his wife's wealth:

Last summer, just before starting to use his wife's plane, Mr. McCain was quoted in a newspaper report as saying that he did not plan to tap her substantial wealth to keep his bid for the Republican presidential nomination going.

"I have never thought about it," Mr. McCain was quoted by The Arizona Republic as saying at a July appearance. "I would never do such a thing, so I wouldn't know what the legalities are."

But even after broken pledges and clear use of Cindy's personal wealth to save her husband's shot at the White House - she still curtly refused any financial transparency.

All in the past, maybe? A struggling campaign cuts a few corners and goes back on its word just to survive a crowded primary?

Nope. The Times reports today that the campaign is still using Cindy's jet:

Cindy McCain said Thursday that she would never release her personal income tax filing even if her husband, Senator John McCain, was elected president. But Federal Aviation Administration records indicate that she appears to be using her personal wealth to help his campaign, through the continued use of her corporate jet.
...
According to public records, the campaign has continued to use the plane, even as Mr. McCain, of Arizona, became the presumed Republican nominee and his campaign's finances have improved. In late April, for instance, the plane landed in Selma and Birmingham, Ala., at the same time he was there as part of his tour of impoverished areas. It also landed last month in New Orleans just before Mr. McCain's appearances there.

And, according to aviation agency records, it landed at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, just outside New York City, on Wednesday evening, apparently to pick up Mrs. McCain, who was in New York with her husband for campaign events and interviews.

The plane left Teterboro on Thursday morning en route to Reagan National Airport outside Washington, where Mrs. McCain had a campaign-related event, records indicate.

Cindy McCain likes to dodge this problem by reminding us that she's "not the candidate." But she's certainly acting as a campaign surrogate, jetting from event to event. And without her corporate plane, the campaign would be forced to either pay for a charter jet itself (at full cost) or reduce her appearances as a surrogate. Either way, her wealth brings significant advantage to her husband's campaign for the Presidency.

Re: Cindy's Wealth Still Aiding McCain

This doesn't seem like something the public at large will care about in itself. But it does undermine his "honest" facade and provide Obama with a ready counterargument when McCain once again starts whining about him not accepting public financing.

Wife helping her husband win the election?

My, that's earth shattering news... Let's stop the presses and shout from the mountaintop!

I'm going to hold my breath until Cindy stops helping her husband get elected President!

Re: Wife helping her husband win the election?

It just doesn't seem like something a HE-MAN Republican should be doing.

Re: Wife helping her husband win the election?

This issue is a loser.

They'll compare Cindy to Teresa Heinz and say same thing.

Re: He shoots, he scores!

Way over the top. But I still can't stop chuckling.

Re: Cindy's Wealth

I am seeing more and more of this narritive from BO supporters and i think we can assume this comes straight from the BO campaign.  And of course this was used against HRC as well.  But this type of smear by the BO campaign is a mistake.

BO already has some really issue with older white voters and taking a run at Cindy McCain is a HUGE mistake.  Many older women voters already feel the press and BO campaign have rought HRC up and may be very sensitive to attacks on Cindy McCain.  And she really is a netural and ever to me doesnt seem that political and is more of a wife supporting her husband.

I am just saying i think the narrative of going after Cindy McCain is a big loser and with so much to go after McCain this seems like one to take a pass on.

Fair game

Just as it's fine for Republicans to go after Michelle Obama, it's fine for Obama's surrogates to go after Cindy McCain if they so please.  The woman abused drugs using funds she stole from a charity; she was never charged because of her last name.

She's not an "older" woman either; she's only six years older than Michelle Obama.  Republicans will definately be featuring Michelle Obama as part of their attacks on Obama.  Would using Michelle be a "smear?"  I'm in the anything is fair game camp, so I would have to answer no.

Eh?

"BO already has some really issue with older white voters and taking a run at Cindy McCain is a HUGE mistake."

How on earth does your premise support your conclusion?

Funny side-note:  It's alright to say "Obama has a problem with some white voters" on MyDD, but not "some white voters have a problem with Obama."

Re: Eh?

I meant to say older white women voters and the key word is women here since he is getting over 90% of black female voters.  And the issue is these voters dont seem to vote for him. And these voters also had a issue with voting for Kerry and in case you are not aware of it Kerry is white.

But my point is a simple one.  If it looks like he is attacking McCain's wife, who is not that political at all, then these voters may see this as a pattern from the BO campaign.

I'm curious

about what you see in this diary that constitutes "going after Cindy McCain." There isn't one negative word about her in it.

(There are other diaries to deal with the completely lame remark about "white voters" which is a manufactured issue from Hillary's campaign.)

Three words: Teresa Heinz Kerry

Will the media and pundit classes go as hard on Cindy McCain's wealth as they were on Teresa Heinz Kerry's back in 2004?

by Shem 2008-05-10 10:32AM | 0 recs
Re: Three words: Teresa Heinz Kerry

And the answer to your question is no.  Cindy McCain's wealth is going to get a pass.  The press is only interested in going after women like HRC or MO.  So rather than whine about it it would be better to go after John McCain.

This is trollish.
  1.  Off-topic
  2.  Deliberately designed to stir up trouble
  3.  Not even original

Hillary is one of us.

I say the commenter should photoshop McSame's head there instead.

Re: Hillary is one of us.

Everything in its own time. Right now Hillary is still trying to stick a knife into Obama; so it isn't surprising that passions still run high.

I agree that this graphic has only one effect: further divide the party. Stop it!

Finding loopholes in the rules.

If you can't find them, create them.  It's the Republican way.

Re: Cindy's Wealth Still Aiding The McCain

3 things:

1. Its a political issue.  Once again, John McCain thinks the rules don't apply to him.

  1. Possibly more importantly, its a tactical issue, giving McCain access to another source of funds.  That must be denied to him, or he must pay a price for it.
  2. If the comments against going after McCain on this this are true concern and not concern trollery, maybe having Teresa Heinz Kerry go after Cindy McCain would be better than doing it directly.

McCain's campaign and Burma

http://www.newsweek.com/id/136321

John McCain's choice to manage the GOP convention this summer is lobbyist Doug Goodyear, whose firm once represented Burma's repressive regime.

This is such an interesting tidbit and I could not find a place for it.

Re: Cindy's Wealth

I will never forgive what Obamas people were willing to do to win. They framed Hillary as a racist and had no problem destroying the 8 years of Democratic success JUST SO Obama could win (by destroying Hillary, not by promoting his "successes")

I guaruntee you Obama will lose the General if OBama disses Hillary again and doesnt give her what she earned, the Vice Presidency.

She got Millions of votes, Obama squeaked out a close one. He has no reason to think he is too good for the creation his people made of Hllary. He is a fraud and a phoney who did nothing to earn his victory other than denigrating his opponebt by lies, smears and race baiting smear.
