Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

From a CNN alert:

The State Department says security on Barack Obama's passport file has been breached, campaign officials tell CNN.

DailyKos diarist Scoopster has more via Keith:

The Dept. of Justice has launched an investigation into the compromising of Sen. Obama's passport data file by two contract employees at the State Department.  A third has been disciplined for accessing the information without necessity.

Cycloptichorn has more in the diaries:

Keith is citing a release from State that the breach occurred on three different occasions, on 9 January, 21 February and 14 March.  They also are saying there is no political motivation behind this breach, it was "...simply curiosity..."

Ah, sure, what's a little benign snooping among spooks? No biggie. How pathetic.

The Obama campaign took the opportunity to slam the Bush administration for presiding over a government that breaches citizens' security rather than protecting it.

"This is an outrageous breach of security and privacy, even from an Administration that has shown little regard for either over the last eight years. Our government's duty is to protect the private information of the American people, not use it for political purposes. This is a serious matter that merits a complete investigation, and we demand to know who looked at Senator Obama's passport file, for what purpose, and why it took so long for them to reveal this security breach," Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

Nice.

Update [2008-3-20 21:3:16 by Jonathan Singer]: You think this was the first time that a Bush State Department was caught spying on a Democratic presidential candidate? Think again. Here's The New York TimesRobert Pear in November 1992:

A State Department official who carried out the two-day search of passport files for information about Gov. Bill Clinton said today that he had resigned, just 48 hours before Federal investigators are expected to issue a report criticizing the search.

The official, Steven M. Moheban, was a top aide to Elizabeth M. Tamposi, the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs who was dismissed last week by President Bush for her role in the search of files on Mr. Clinton, his mother, Virginia Kelley, and Ross Perot, the independent Presidential candidate.

[...]

Ms. Tamposi has said that White House officials encouraged the search of Mr. Clinton's records and that her superiors approved it. The inspector general has interviewed White House officials. But it is not clear whether he will assign any responsibility for the search to senior officials at the White House and the State Department, or will merely focus on Ms. Tamposi and lower-ranking employees.

Is this really the we do things in the United States?

[editor's note, by Todd Beeton]I had updated the post with info from Cycloptichorn's diary -- restored above -- but it got lost in the updating madness. Sorry about that.

Time for Hilary Clinton to show some leadership
This is an opportunity for Hilary Clinton to show some leadership and moral courage. She should immediately come to the aid of Obama, the Democratic Party and all those who love and defend our constitutional right of privace.

Hillary should immediately and forcefully condemn this repeated breach of privacy and the lack of sufficient management action to prevent the second and third breach, and she should make a strong statement using this pattern of criminal negligence (at best) to raise the publics awareness of the need to fight the administration on FISA.

Democrats should pay heed.

Deja vu all over again

How well I remember the flap when Bill Clinton's file was breached in 1992.
.
They were looking for proof of allegations that he went to play footsie with the Soviet Union in the 60's.

What does this mean for the 2008 campaign?  Probably not much.
Americans have become numb to privacy invasions.

I don't know about that.

It's quite likely he might get put another governor's scalp on his mantle.

He's been pretty phenomenal here in the IL Northern district when it comes to prosecuting corruption... I have some other issues (civil liberties, mainly) on some other office prosecutions, but when it come to go after dirty pols in our state, no one's done it better.

Why did it take until the THIRD TIME to notify Obama?

I mean... what... did they want to triplecheck and make sure they didn't miss anything the first 2 times?

I think we need to know the names of who accessed the information.

The official is calling it "imprudent curiosity".

Eagleburger: 1992 incident was worse

Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger on Dan Abrams MSNBC just commented that the 1992 incident was much worse than the recent Obama incident.

He elaborates that the 1992 incident was instigated by political appointees specifically investgating Bill Clinton's passport for political ammunition. He does not believe that this is the case regarding this incident.

How does he know? Does he know more than us? Or is he already engaging in spin control, trying to downplay the incident?

Let's forget about Obama as a candidate.  Let's think of him as a Democrat.  I say that because we shouldn't politicize this.  This could be serious.

It happened once in January, once in February, and once in March.  We are only hearing about it now, and it doesn't sound like the Justice Department was the one that disclosed this.

This brings it all home -- this is EXACTLY why Americans should not ever have to just 'trust' the people running our government.  It's why we have laws and why even PRESIDENTS must follow them when it comes to our personal info, our privacy, and our communications.

A few more details about the Obama passport breach. According to a new piece out in the Post from Glenn Kessler, the breaches occurred Jan. 9th, Feb. 21st and March 14th.

That would be the day after the New Hampshire primary, the day of the Democratic debate in Texas and the day the Wright story really hit.

What a bunch of recycled wingnut

talking points!  The Clintons never used the FBI files for political purposes and were completely  exonerated from any wrongdoing whatsover.

From Wikipedia :

Starr exonerated both President Clinton and the First Lady of complicity in the FBI files matter, saying "while there are outstanding issues that we are attempting to resolve with respect to one individual [we] found no evidence that anyone higher [than Livingstone or Marceca] was in any way involved in ordering the files from the FBI. Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

Yawn... Americans don't care about privacy, just like they barely care about Iraq, right guys?

We can't hang stuff like this around McCain's neck, cause people like him. Right?  I, for one, would like to talk about the ecomony and put the Wright videos back on a constant loop.  Who's with me?

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

It's telling when David Gergen practically had to plead with Anderson Cooper to quit circulating racial bogeyman nonsense like the Obama grandmother "conspiracy" that is such the rage around here.  He made a point that it had been heavily circulated in the rightwing media.  Go figure.  Birds of a feather.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

I saw that.  If Obama's speech did anything, it at least made some of the more reasonable media types pretty embarrassed to parse the candidate's every word looking for "gotchas".

It would be nice if some people, and I'm not naming any names, would feel half the shame of your "typical" TV talking head.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

Please excuse me for not joining the hysteria, but....this sort of thing happened rather frequently before the monitoring systems they have now were put in place. In fact, most of the time we didn't even know a breach had taken place unless the breachee complained publicly.  It took thirteen months for anyone to notify me that my passport info had been snooped...but then, of course, I'm not Barack Obama.

In this case, it looks as if the system worked.  Two of the culprits were quickly discovered and fired, the third disciplined.  I can't see why this unfortunate but hardly catastrophic development required a breathless Keith Olbermann to speculate for a full hour, unless he was a waiting for some kind of detail that might, hopefully, implicate Hillary Clinton....while in the meantime showing endless clips of BO gesticulating at milling crowds of people.  As it happened, I was watching a pre-season Yankee-Blue Jays game on TV and kept switching back to see if there was actually any news on Olbermann.  Nope, just frenzied repeating of the same sparse information and miles of speculation.

When the game was over (Yanks won) I switched to CNN only to find my TV screen again filled with nothing but Obama.  It's unbelievable to what lengths these networks will go to shove their  candidate down our throats.  THANK GOD baseball season will begin soon!  (And I'll bet God's thankful, too.)

Exactly.  But this wouldn't have happened to Obama, unless he was black.  Lucky ducky.  Move along.  Nothing to see here.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

Um, is it possible that these are just some nosy people with time on their hands, playing with a govt' computer?

I know that the Obama organs (CNN, MSNBC) want to treat this like Ruby killing Oswald, but could it be that it's just a way to get around reporting on Barak's race problem?

Before you go and call me a typical white person, do you really think that McCain, Clinton, or Bush need to resort to using contractor geeks to look at a system jimmied to give an alarm on a breach? Heck, they all already probably have this info, and more. And Barak probably has info on them.

One thing I did hear that was interesting. Obama has NEVER been to Europe?

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

If people could step away from the Clinton/Obama fight for half a second, they would see that this is a perfect issue to pound McCain over the head with.

You've got three things here; privacy, privatization, and political appointees.  McCain is on the wrong side of all of these issues.  Maybe we should worry less about whether this helps Obama, or whether Clinton is behind this (which is a pretty cynical thing to think about another Democrat), and instead think about how we can make this kind of crap stick to McCain.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

Is the media not allowed to devote a few hours to a different story between now and August, or November?  Whoever is at fault, this story can be woven into the greater theme of government surveillance and privatization.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

BTW, Keith-O has taken to reporing things off of the Drudge wire. This story is one. Then he and Obama lackey Eugene Robinson were talking with great gravity of the picture of Bill Clinton with the Rev. Hatred.

Funny... Drudge had that too.

Earth to Keith-O: Please don't tell that the picture was taken during the 1990s, BEFORE the Rev. Hatred delivered his putrid sermons.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

This isn't the right place for this discussion, but I'm going to ask just one question: if Wright was sufficiently credible and legitimate to hang out with the Clintons in the '90's, then what is all of this crap about Obama "listening to a racist pastor for 20 years" about?  Your post implies that Wright may not have been as offensive back then, which is certainly out of line with MyDD orthodoxy on this issue.

Re: Barack Obama's Passport File Breached

I think it's pretty clear what happened.  The repuglies made this whole thing up, see, you can't find out who the perps are.  Why?  Obama will spin this to his advantage, as well as get visibility.  The repugs love this, since it brings closer the nominee they can beat.  Soundly.  They do not want to face HRC, she will beat their asses.  Soundly.

Thanks Todd and Jonathan for a good post
As a Obama fan and long-time MyDD reader, I appreciate your post criticism this breach of privacy.

Compare this front page post by Todd Benton and Jonathan Singer to the silliness that Jaralyn wrote at TalkLeft, where she is defending the State Dept and Bush Administration as vigorously has she defended Scooter Libby.

We need to remember that this is the FOURTH such breach by a Bush administration, going back to 1992.

Where are they now dept?

I would really like to know what happened to those 2 thugs from '92, Steven M. Moheban and  Elizabeth M. Tamposi.  My money is on some right wing 'think tank'.

This is just the first probings of the Republican smear machine, by November "even his own mother wouldn't know him" (Local R politician's campaign manager).  And I would like to ask the Obama supporters if they're ready for much more of this?
