David Shuster Suspended

First came Shuster's tasteless comment about Chelsea. Then came a conference call on which Clinton aide Howard Wolfson...
...called Shuster's comment "beneath contempt" and disgusting."I, at this point, can't envision a scenario where we would continue to engage in debates on that network," he added.
Shuster apologized for the comment on Morning Joe and it was then revealed that Shuster...
...has been temporarily suspended from appearing on all NBC news broadcasts except to offer his apology."NBC News takes these matters seriously, and offers our sincere regrets to the Clintons for the remarks," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said, adding the network was hopeful the debate would take place as planned.
First of all, beyond being bummed that the best thing about Hardball will be absent from the show for a period, I have to agree with Josh Marshall -- what the hell is so distasteful about Chelsea making {gasp!} phone calls? Seems to me Shuster was trying to make a story out of the superdelegate situation and the Clinton campaign made sure that backfired on him. But this wasn't just about nipping a story questioning the Clinton campaign's superdelegate strategy in the bud; seems to me it was also sending a clear message, not necessarily that Chelsea is off-limits, she is part of the campaign after all, but that Hillary Clinton will defend her at all costs when attacked even if it costs her a debate -- a protective instinct mothers everywhere no doubt will relate to. Clinton as mother (and all that implies: caretaker, multi-tasker, head of the household -- a friend's mother told her "everyone knows it's the mom that pays the bills, it's about time a woman was president...") has been a potent subtext of Clinton's campaign and this offered yet another opportunity to bring that to the surface.
