The General Election Has Begun

There may not be a Democratic nominee yet, but that hasn't kept what will be a united Democratic front against John McCain from kicking into gear.

First, here's a new ad from the DNC going after McCain on his revisionist history, one that the media has bought hook line and sinker by the way, that maintains he was an early and vocal critic of Bush's war plan:

Next is a new campaign from our friends at Brave New Films called Less Jobs More Wars, riffing off what Joe Scarborough actually (albeit sarcastically) remarked would be John McCain's winning general election strategy.

Wow, the YouTube is really not John McCain's friend. This is going to be fun...

Update [2008-2-12 15:56:58 by Todd Beeton]:And Planned Parenthood has begun running anti-McCain ads in the GOP primary to educate voters about his anti-choice record -- yes, MANY voters still think he is pro-choice.

Announcer: Think you know which candidate for president wants to outlaw abortion and overturn Roe v. Wade?

McCain: “I do not support Roe v. Wade. It should be overturned.” [AP, 2/18/07]

Announcer: That’s John McCain, not Mike Huckabee, and those are his real views. Even though John McCain knows what’s at risk, he wants abortion to be illegal again, just like it used to be.

McCain: “I do believe that it’s very likely or possible that a Supreme Court should, could overturn Roe v. Wade.” [ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulos, 11/19/06]

Announcer: McCain’s plan to outlaw abortion threatens the lives and health of women — that’s why John McCain received a zero percent rating from Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the lowest rating in the US Senate. When you vote, always vote pro-choice and remember John McCain’s real talk:

McCain: “I have been pro-life for all of my political career.” [NBC Meet the Press with Tim Russert, 5/13/07]

Announcer: Paid for by Planned Parenthood Action Fund; not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. www.plannedparenthoodvotes.org. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is responsible for the content of this advertisement.

That second ad is pretty nice.

One thing about McCain is that he's such a rambling, halting speaker, that it's kinda tough to catch him in sound bites sometimes!

Re: The General Election Has Begun

Good. This is what I have been waiting for. Regardless of who gets nominated from the Democrats, the party as a whole should start fighting the General Election right now instead of spending so much energy bashing either Hillary or Obama.

Someone give the people at Brave New Films a permanent job with the DNC . Their work has consistently been top notch over  the years. Much more effective than Michael Moore's work, in my opinion.

Flip on conventional wisdom?

If the DNC is already ramping up the general campaign, then the longer primary on the Democratic side may actually play to our advantage. Return fire has to be on general themes or split between the two candidates.

As long as Clinton and Obama can avoid blowing the party up in the interim (which they seem to be managing, impassioned bloggers aside ;) this might provide some very useful cover....

Fewer jobs, more wars, goddamn it.

Re: The General Election Has Begun

of course we need fewer jobs while we're at war.

if all the young men are off killing people, then the underemployment would drive up wages, and we can't have that.
Duh

Hey, it's a Joe Scarborough quote -- what do you expect, literacy?

Re: The General Election Has Begun

Key against McCain is to make people recognize that McCain of 2008 isn't McCain of 2000. I think the DNC's "President McCain = Bush's 3rd Term" slogan gets at this well.
