Iran: A nation of bloggers

Bumped - Todd

The US population, for the most part, has such an unbelievable conception of Iranians that it defies even starting a conversation. And unfortunately, that negative perception is enhanced all to often by our politicians.

I was on a train for three weeks in Jan-Feb 2001, traveling from Mumbai, through India to Nepal and back (yea it takes that long and we stopped off a lot), and wound up sharing a sleeper cabin with 5 Iranians for a week-- very educating. Back then, blogging wasn't much on the radar, but it took off here in the subsequent years, and it's also happening in Iran.

This is a short video, created by Vancouver Film School students Aaron Chiesa, Toru Kageyama, Hendy Sukarya, and Lisa Temes through the VFS Digital Design program.

I'm involved in a book project right now on the global netroots, and came across this video while reading through a popular Philippine blog, heh.

Re: Iran: A nation of bloggers

Children of Jihad by Jared Cohen includes discussion of his travels in Iran and how youths there use technology for social purposes.

Also, as a Filipino-American, I would like to know which blog, if revealing it doesn't interfere with your project.

Re: Iran: A nation of bloggers

I remember reading once that Iran had some 75,000 bloggers. I think it a function of a) it's a young country (ie a large population under 30) and b) it provides an avenue to circumvent a restrictive media environment.

Venezuela is another country where blogging has exploded. It seems that Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad do have some things in common.

Re: Iran: A nation of bloggers

I should add that many Iranian blogs are based in London or outside Iran.

Re: Iran: A nation of bloggers

C'mon they were Persia, one of the oldest societies on Earth. They can be just as decadent as we can.

Somewhat off topic...

Here is a great commentary by Iranian scholars and diplomats on what US foreign policy should be towards Iran: Joint Experts' Statement on Iran.
