PA-Sen: Patrick Murphy Looks at Senate Run

Shira Toeplitz reports for Roll Call (subscription required):

Add another name to the list of people who are considering a run against Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) in 2010.

Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), according to one of his closest advisers, is looking at a statewide bid. Murphy was just elected to a second term representing the northern Philadelphia suburbs.

"Patrick is taking the race and considering the race very strongly," Daren Berringer, a top adviser to Murphy, said Thursday. "He's certainly weighing a lot of his options for the future, and the U.S. Senate race is very attractive, and he's looking at it very strongly right now."

Patrick Murphy does have a good track record of winning in the suburban areas of Philadelphia key to winning statewide in Pennsylvania, and with more than $1.5 million in the bank as of the middle of October, Murphy would have a good basis from which to launch a Senate run if he wanted to jump in. Murphy, of course, isn't the only Democrat looking at the race. As noted earlier today, Chris Matthews has been making quite a bit of noise of late, and Toeplitz reports that Rep. Allyson Schwartz and State House Deputy Speaker Josh Shapiro may also have an eye on the contest. And as I noted before, Specter may be more vulnerable than many think.

Any one that would keep Tweety out has my vote!

According to Ed Randell Tweety has no chance unless Spectre loses in the primary and that ain't happening.

I wouldn't be so sure that Specter losing in the primary isn't happening. He just barely survived last time and Pat Toomey is thinking of running again. The PA republican party is likely more conservative now than it was in 2004 due to moderates switching party registration to democrat or independent. The best way for democrats to defeat Specter remains the same as in 2004 - work behind the scenes to ouster him in the republican primary.

normally I don't get involved

in other states' primaries, but I would be looking to contribute to someone other than Chris Matthews in the Democratic primary in PA, if it comes to that.

We can do a lot better than Matthews.

WOO HOO!

I hereby endorse fellow King's College Alumnus Patrick Murphy for senate in 2010.

I betcha the field clears out pretty quick. Everybody know Patrick is a rising star, and he's a great fundraiser, too.

I just can't imagine Chris Matthews in the Senate. Would Michael Nutter make a run?

Re: PA-Sen: Patrick Murphy Looks at Senate Run

He's got some problems right now with the city's budget. To allay the deficit created largely by the previous administration, the mayor has proposed closing some of the city's pools, ice rinks, and 11 of the libraries.

People are not happy here, and rightly so. It would be very difficult for him to fix these problems and raise money for 2010. He might even have a primary challenge in 2011.

I do like what he's done so far, except for the library thing. It's pretty ridiculous.

Re: PA-Sen: Patrick Murphy Looks at Senate Run

I'd prefer Schwartz (since Murphy's a Blue Dog), but I'd prefer Murphy to Matthews.

Re: PA-Sen: Patrick Murphy Looks at Senate Run

I WANT to like Murphy, who showed some courage on Iraq and would add some needed youth to the Senate, but he's a bluedog and quite conservative on economic issues.  I think we can do better in a state obama won by a pretty healthy margin.  At this point, Schwartz sounds better to me, athough Sestak would have been my first choice.  Apparently he's out though.
