McCain Concession Speech Thread

Very magnanimous.

Update [2008-11-4 23:30:47 by Todd Beeton]:McCain used his speech to try to repent for his campaign tactics. I'm glad he is trying to talk down his supporters and call for unity but the campaign he ran will not be forgotten, nor will it be forgiven any time soon.

Dear god -

If he had run like this, he'd have won.  Thank god for the Bush taint.

Decent man, rotten to the core party though.

Very classy speech by John McCain.  I may ways he said things that BO could not and he really impressed me tonight.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

I am seeing the John McCain from a few years ago now.  If he returns to being a straight shooter I have no problem placing him at one of the highest rungs of respect.  I think he is giving a really  nice and generous concession.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

He's done in 2010.   He retires or Neopolitano guts him in the Senate race.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

Where was this McCain in the last 6 months?

There sure are lots of clowns at his speech though...

Magnanimous in defeat is no substitute for magnanimous in victory.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

It was a great speech by McCain.  Reminds of the McCain that ran against Bush 8 years ago.  Just goes to show that having to run as a republican corrupts one soul, but it doesn't necessarily have to stick.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

McCain gave a nice speech...

That being said, Revenge is best served cold...  One way or another, his political career is done in 2010... either through Retirement or Defeat... he is over.

His supporters are DICKS.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

What need is there really for revenge?  He lost already.

He was clearly defeated by the decision to try to appeal to the supporters who wouldn't even listen to his own concession speech.  I hope this is the first step for our country rewarding those folks for being the squeaky wheels.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

HEAR! HEAR! It's time to move forward. McCain tried to stay true to his ideals with a party that wouldn't listen, and that's why he lost.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

The real McCain comes back now, when it's too late.  A shame.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

Imagine if McCain had conducted his campaign with the same spirit of generosity, magnanimity, and rhetorical largeness with which he ended it.  He might have done considerably better.  If nothing else, he would have had an effort that would have done him, and the nation, proud.

(On the other hand, if McCain had run a classier, and better, campaign, we'd probably still be biting our fingernails right now instead of watching Obama come on stage to give what is sure to be a great speech.)

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

Actually, CBS has already forgotten the campaign. Several commentators talking about how "McCain conducted his campaign as he did his political career, with a great deal of class." They are going on about how eager he will be to work with Obama. We have work to do to prevent history being completely white washed.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

Nice speech, Mr. McCain.  He is a hero and perhaps a good man.  He had the impossible task of carrying the Republican banner and trying to both hold the base and get moderates.  He couldn't do it.  I don't know if anybody could.

Re: McCain Concession Speech Thread

Am I the only one who felt McCain's speech fell short? True, it wasn't clearly incendiary like so many of his recent speeches. His tone was generally good. He did give Obama some praise, but at the end he dwelled on how great it is for African-Americans that a black man won (what about the rest of us?) and ended up by saying we will never surrender. Now, I listened to the speech live on TV but haven't yet read it for a second impression. But that was the impression I had when I heard it. That was his chance to defuse the hate he has worked up in the last weeks of the campaign, and while technically adequate, I felt he should have done a lot more.
