Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

Madelyn Dunham, Barack Obama's grandmother who played a large part in his upbringing, passed away today according to the Associated Press. Our thoughts go out to the Obama family.

Update [2008-11-3 17:18:46 by Todd Beeton]:Stay classy, California Republican Party.

From HuffPo:

"Senator Obama recently traveled to Hawaii to visit his sick grandmother. This was the right thing for any grandson to do -- at his own expense -- but it was not travel that his campaign may fund," said California Republican Chairman Ron Nehring in a statement Monday.

"In Senator Obama's own words, his travels took him 'off the [campaign] trail for a day.' The trip featured no campaign events of any kind its 22-hour duration and his decision to travel was 'not driven by political concerns,' according to an Obama spokesperson. Since the trip's purpose was entirely and admittedly personal, the fact that he made campaign telephone calls and talked with staff aides while traveling does not convert this purely personal trip into a proper campaign expense. Therefore, the Obama Campaign violated the FEC's ban on 'personal use' of campaign funds when it paid over $100,000 for the Campaign's charter to fly to Hawaii without obtaining reimbursement from Senator Obama."

I can only assume that this complaint came before her death was made public although the CRP is so morally bankrupt, I'd put nothing past them.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

How very very sad...

I'm so glad Senator Obama took time away from the campaign trail to visit her...

I'm actually really moved by this... its almost as if Toot got him there and then said "Now you'll have to cross on your own..."

It's just not fair...

36 hours from now she could have perhaps seen her grandson become elected president in an historic moment.  Getting that close and then dying... that's just cruel.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

Somewhere there is a pathetic Repbulican, probably thousands, who believe that the Obama people somehow timed this to coincide with the election so he could garner the most sympathy votes.

In fact, I already read something to that effect.

I honestly worry about the state of this nation.

How heartbreaking.  I'm glad he was able to spend some time with her last week.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

I think his choice to take time off the trail and one of the top guys threatening to skip election day if his child is born then is a good one.

Balance is important.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

Regarding the update, I'm sure that if Obama asked his supporters, we would all be happy to chip in and pay for the price of the charter to Hawaii and still have money left over for a great big sign telling that asshole California Republican to F*&# OFF.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

Well they are going to seize on anything to make the campaign look corrupt. Why give them reason? He could've used his own money to go there after all.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

Because Obama doesn't have a sugar mommy he cheated on his first wife with who uses her plane in a questionable violation of finance law as their campaign plane.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

WTF? I think Obama is doing well enough financially to afford the trip. No he isn't rich like McCain (who was a spoiled rich brat growing up as well, his wife just made him even richer), but he is financially quite well off & could afford the trip, which is why it made no sense to me to do this & get that scrutiny.

Re: Barack Obama's Grandmother Passes Away

God, what an emotional whirlwind this must be for Obama.  The loss of a loved one, the stress and anxiety of the campaigne, and i'm sure the excitment of being so well poised to win the election.  I can't imagine how he's balancing these emotions.  My sympathies for him and his family.  And my hopes for our nation tomorrow.
