Road to 60: Begich Stretches Lead in Latest Tally

Today's count out of Alaska shows Democrat Mark Begich's lead over incumbent Republican Senator Ted Stevens growing -- though still a bit short of the .5 percentage point lead necessary to forestall a mandatory potential recount.

Ted Stevens (R-i): 137,937 votes (47.02 percent)
Mark Begich (D): 138,959 votes (47.37 percent)

As of 9:34 PM Eastern

Votes still remain to be counted, but from the last tally Begich's lead has grown from 814 votes to 1,061 1,022 votes, and from .29 percentage points to .36 .35 percentage points. The trend clearly looks good for Begich -- even the Stevens camp freely admits as much -- but here's to hoping Begich is able to clear that .5 percentage point mark so that this race can be settled relatively more quickly than it would if it went to a mandatorystate-funded recount.

Notice that the Alaska Independence Party candidate Bob Bird is drawing more than 4 percent. How much of that vote would've gone to Stevens if Bird wasn't running?

Is the AIP keeping Palin from Washington?

But even then, is the AIP candidate doing any better than they usually do?  Here in WA, it's not unusual for the Dem to win by fewer votes than the Libertarian gets, but it's just a fact of life.  Although, not so much with our idiotic "top two" primary...

I can't wait until the 2014 race between Begich and Palin.

Sen. Begich, Sen. Franken: Welcome!

Though I don't have high expectations for him, HELLO Senator Begich!!  Don't let that cell door hit you on the way in, Mr. Stevens.

Begich is going to win.  So is Franken.  We're at 59.  From what I read, the ballots they counted today came from areas more favorable to Stevens; so when they count the rest next week, Begich's lead should only expand further.  Alaska has elected a Democratic senator for the first time in 34 years.

Now, if only Max Cleland had run in Georgia...
