West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

A new ARG poll out of West Virginia (600 LVs, Oct. 4-8, MOE +/- 4%) shows Barack Obama with an 8% lead over John McCain (mid-September results in parentheses.)

Obama 50 (45)
McCain 42 (49)

While ARG has been a rather unreliable pollster of late, their other polls in this batch (MN, MO, MT, NH, OH & TX) look reasonable and this poll was enough for Pollster and RCP to switch West Virginia to toss-up status. Just look at how few toss-ups Pollster has on their map (the yellow states.) Yesterday there were just 5, today, with the addition of West Virginia, there are now 6 accounting for just 60 electoral votes. What do they all have in common? George W. Bush won them in 2004.

While a poll showing Obama up 8 in WV is rather jarring, and probably overstates his level of support somewhat, the competitiveness of West Virginia shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. Since June, McCain has never had more than a single digit lead over Obama. Nate Silver took notice back in September.

On the other side of the coin is West Virginia, where a Mark Blankenship Enterprises poll shows John McCain ahead by just 5 points, with a high number of undecideds. This poll has a small sample size and I don't know much about the firm, although it's apparently been polling WVA for quite a while. Those caveats aside, however, if West Virginia is truly polling at just 5 points in the midst of McCain's convention bounce, it becomes a pretty interesting state. Remember, there are a lot of Democrats in West Virginia, and a particularly large number of Clinton Democrats, a group which may be coming home to Obama even amidst his difficulties. And there are not a lot of evangelicals; West Virginia is fairly culturally conservative, but it is not Southern ethnographically. There are scattered reports that Obama has devoted more resources to West Virginia; it remains a long-shot for him, but his staff would surely be doing more good there than somewhere like Alaska.

Hmm, so maybe instead of Florida and New Mexico, Hillary Clinton should be dispatched to states like West Virginia and Arkansas!

Oh wait, she is. From a press release:

On Friday , October 10 , Senator Clinton will attend a campaign event for Anne Barth , candidate for West Virginia 's 2nd congressional district.

Later in the afternoon on Friday , October 10 , Senator Clinton will travel to Little Rock , AR for a rally on the Capitol Steps on behalf of Senators Obama and Biden and the Arkansas Democratic Party.

I hope to hear more from Carnacki on the goings on on the ground in WV. Check out this post from back in September to see how hard Democrats have been working for Obama there.

Sending in the A team, I like the sound of that.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

Remember that story last week where the NRA wanted to tape a hit piece on Obama with a group of coal miners in WV?   Yeah...they decided to take that day off.

While Union members are traditionally democratic, white union members in rural areas of OH, WV, etc, have recently gone for Bush, and I would imagine that they would have happily run a hit piece on Gore or Kerry.

If this story is an indication of the entire state (and this poll would certainly back that up), WV is definitely in play!

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

Remember, WV has a Democratic governor, two Dem. Senators and two Dem Congressmen.  I have always thought that giving up on WV was a bad idea.  Hillary should spend more time there.

I would think that AR could also go for Obama, as well, in spite of what the poll numbers show us now.  Still, we need to keep focused.  The tide seems like it is going our way, but these are not ordinary times.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

Well, as they've said about states like Georgia, WV and others, those aren't states you target--if they're slipping, it's because it's a landslide. It's great to see a glimmer of hope in states like this. Hopefully, Obama casts a few lines over there in terms of TV ads and surrogate appearances to see what he turns up. Biden would play well in WV, I'd think.

yup.

But obama's been throwin money at WV for a while... I figure it's cause it's reached by a lotta prime markets -- definitely Ohio and PA, and probably VA too...

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

West Virginia has a much more Democrtic tradition than it has shown inhte last two Presidential elections (it's gone Dem, most of the time since 1960), so this may not be all that surprising.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

ARG used a lesser percentage of Democrats (55%) and greater percentage of Republicans (35%) in their survey than what was the actual voter turnout in the 2004 election (58-30) when George Bush won.  This poll well may be real.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

I've been wondering why this didn't happen earlier. WV was traditionally one of the most reliably democratic states - Carter beat Reagan and Dukakis beat Bush in WV. It has almost a 2-1 majority of democrats, it's governor is democratic and I believe all of its congressman are democratic.

Gore probably lost it because the state is very anti-environmentalist. Never thought I'd see the day when a Democrat would carry Virginia and lose WV, and not the other way around.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

West Virginia tends to be Democratic, but it also tends to side with incumbents nationally.  The Republican skew heretofore might have reflected gravity toward the incumbent party.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

er,I understand your point, but let's not get carried away. Plenty of states elect Democrats to statewide or federal office, but would never vote for a Democratic presidential candidate. There's a big difference in those states between "our Democrats" versus those commie, baby-killin', gay-lovin' "other Democrats." Hence, red states like Wyoming, Tennessee, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, etc., have Democratic governors, senators or both.

Having said that, despite WV's long history of supporting Democrats, it hasn't even been close in recent presidential elections (or since the rise of hardcore Christian conservatism):
2004 - Bush 56, Kerry 43
2000 - Bush 52, Gore 46

Ok I here-by denounce, take back, apologize, fall to bended knee asking forgiveness for every bad thing I might have said about WV and it inhabitance.

Second

I was pretty hard on WV during the primary wars. If they can turn around and vote for Obama, then I say that we need to find a new state to be the butt of all jokes.

P.S.: It's 'inhabitants'

Hey, I came from the Florida public school system

I'm still amazed that I can tie my shoes and not wet myself.

It was a good original comment nonetheless.

I'm working on an analysis and will try to post it tonight. There's some insider baseball stuff that people here will like.

Re: West Virginia Now A Toss-Up

This poll is ARG. They haven't become great pollsters in the last month.

That WV is even close is good news.
