Protecting Marriage Equality In California

Got lost in the debate melee, bumped - Todd

This has been a rather newsworthy day in the fight for marriage equality in California...but not in a good way.

First the polling data on Proposition 8, which is the right wing's ballot initiative to eliminate same sex couple's right to marry, via e-mail:

A new poll just released by KPIX, San Francisco's CBS television affiliate, reveals a shocking shift in support for Proposition 8. According to the poll, likely California voters now favor passage of Prop 8 by a five-point margin, 47 percent to 42 percent, following a recent blitz of advertising by supporters of the initiative. Meanwhile, an internal poll just released by the "No on 8" campaign confirms the KPIX poll numbers, showing Prop 8 winning 47%-43%.

Now Julia at Calitics reports No on Prop 8 is behind Yes on 8's fundraising by $6 million.

California progressives have gotten a bit complacent on this ballot measure's chances, which is why the Courage Campaign has launched its new web ad "Gender Auditors", which uses humor to attack Prop 8 from a privacy and fairness perspective.

From Julia:

It is aimed at straight people, using a privacy, "get the government out of my pants" argument.  The undecided electorate is quirky.  Some of your friends will be swayed by talk about fundamental rights being taken away.

Do me a favor and watch it, rate it up and spread it to your friends. We have to get the word out to oppose Prop. 8. You can find out more about the campaign for equality at NoOnProp8.com. Also, please be sure to Vow to Vote No on Proposition 8.

Update [2008-10-8 4:22:28 by Todd Beeton]:Rick Jacobs, Chair of the Courage Campaign, has more at The Huffington Post.

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California
Thanks for getting on this.  We have a lot of work to do on this incredibly important matter.  I just donated twice to No on 8 yesterday:

It really is a secondary issue

That said, again, this is probably such an important issue for so many its probably not going to be a big deal getting support.

I am not really sure what the right time is to bring up this issue to tell the truth but I am pretty certain its going to be important to society at large.

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

I think it might be helpful to the California voter to know who is putting up all the ads in opposition to gay marriage.  It is the bigoted Utah Mormon sect.  My idea of a more powerful one would be to show a grim faced Grand Poobah of Salt Lake surrounded by ten wives and sixty children saying, "We chosen ones here in Utah believe in the sanctity of marriage!  Vote for Prop 8."

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

I married my partner of 15 years here in Encinitas, CA two weeks ago.

I hope that straight people in California will realize that by allowing same sex couples to marry, it does no harm to THEM or THEIR relationship, yet it legitimizes people like my Partner and I who have been together for 15 years and who simply want the same rights as straight people with regards to benefits, inheritance, taxes, children, etc.

Thanks for putting this up again.

just no push from the no side

I think activists are caught up in the presidential race and other races, and so are basically ignoring Prop. 8.

As I posted last night, I've seen zero No on 8 bumper stickers--zero.  And I also think 8 will pass unless we can get more Democrats to vote no.  I haven't seen the internals of the SUSA poll yet, but targeting Democrats is the way to go.

Prop. 8 protects kids

The defeat of Prop. 8 is not a progressive issue.

Prop. 8 protects kids to learn about these sensitive, nuanced issues from their families and churches, not schools and public groups, like the Boy Scouts, etc., which will be forced to address these topics because gay marriage would be legal and an undeniable part of society.

Gay and lesbian couples should get every right under the law that straight married couples get. But marriage is not a right, it's a privilege, and just like driving, which is also a privilege, there are rules, requirements and physical factors which govern safe driving, and hence successful marriages.

Let's not swerve off the path to true equality by mandating from our courts that a privilege be expanded beyond its original intent.

Re: Prop. 8 protects kids

If you or your church has no desire to recognize gay marriage, that's your right.

Your views should not be imposed on the rest of us.

Re: Prop. 8 protects kids

I have kids, too.  My kids are the children of a gay man with an 18 year stable relationship with another man.  Who are you to say what is good for anyone else's children?

This is an issue of civil rights.  If the state decides to provide benefits to people on the basis of marriage, which they do when, for example, Social Security benefits accrue to the surviving partners in marriages, they need to be even handed.  If churches want to continue with their religion based bigotry in the matter of marriage, let them, but we pay taxes and deserve the same benefits as any other citizen.  I am tired of paying taxes to benefit only hetero married couples.

uprated for ratings abuse

I do not agree with this comment (in fact I donated $25 to the No on Prop 8 campaign), but this is just a differing opinion rather than a troll comment that deserves to be hidden with zero ratings.

Re: uprated for ratings abuse

If he was proposing that black people shouldn't be allowed to vote, would that be "just an opinion," rather than a troll comment?

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

does the California constitution require a plurality or a majority to be ammended?

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

simple majority.

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

I just realized my question wasn't worded precisely.  Does ammending the constitution of California require "Yes"s in the amount of 50%+1 of votes cast for the amendment or 50%+1 of all ballots.  The difference is if an abstination on a ballot is effectively a "no" vote or not a factor.  You may have understood my question but I can't be sure.  sorry

I just made a donation

on a friend's wedding registry here:

www.eqca.org

She and her partner went to California to get married this summer and they set up a registry so that friends could donate to the No on Prop 8 campaign in lieu of sending a wedding gift.

Same-sex couples might want to consider setting up a registry there and asking your friends to donate.

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

I and my wife are working on an ad for no on Prop. 8...I know there's a way you can buy ads on TV that's been mentioned several times on different blogs, but can't remember the URL. Anyone here know?

Re: Protecting Marriage Equality In California

The sad thing is the Gavin Newsom ad that Yes for Prop 8 is running has been extremely effective.  It's been the topic of discussion at two weddings I've been to his month in Northern California (liberal weddings).  There's already a healthy distaste for Gavin and that ad merely accentuates his swarmy nature.

My two cents on why the polls have changed so much. One of the most effective campaign ads I've seen in a long time.
