Jonathan's Debate Thread

Here we go...

  • Is it just me or is McCain getting the last word significantly more often than Obama? Is there parity here?
  • That's about the toughest hit on McCain -- the "Bomb Iran" song, etc. McCain saying "not true"? It's real tough to say you didn't say it when everyone has seen the tape.
  • Going back a second, Ambinder catches one of the key contrasts of this election: "McCain: Health care is a privilege. Obama: health care is a right."
  • I have to think that McCain is the first ever presidential candidate to talk about his need for hair plugs...
  • Now McCain is lurking in the background -- Cheney-like, in fact. I feel a major aspect of the SNL debate skit coming on...

Previous updates below the fold...

  • "That one"? Really. There's a point at which a candidate's lack of respect for his opponent becomes a real detriment to that first candidate -- and the fact that McCain can't look at Obama, he can't sit still while Obama speaks, and now can't even say his name, just calling him "that one," says to me that he has clearly crossed that line.
  • I had thought that Obama had missed an opportunity to hit McCain on entitlements -- both because of McCain's calls for cuts and for his calls for privatization -- but McCain demagoguing the issue opens him big time to a response from Obama.
  • Another failed joke from McCain. He is just not connecting, either with the audience in the hall or on television. And trying to tie Obama to Herbert Hoover just doesn't pass the smell test, either.
  • Per Marc Ambinder, McCain still won't look at Obama. This is a major problem, a potential President unable to even look at a competitor for the office. Really?
  • I've got to wonder how well McCain calling for entitlement cuts -- at a time of economic downturn -- will play in places like Florida and Pennsylvania, both of which have enormous elderly populations.
  • McCain standing up during Obama's answer... can't stand still. Last debate it was McCain not being able to look at Obama. Tonight will it be McCain unable or unwilling to show Obama the respect of remaining seated and listening to his answers?
  • McCain takes a big swing at Obama over Fannie and Freddie. Doesn't seem to have landed either -- and the problem with taking a big swing is that you leave yourself open to a counter-punch, which McCain did as his staff is made up of lobbyists, including those for Fannie and Freddie.
  • Oof. McCain swings and misses on his first attempted joke, responding to Brokaw's question as to whom he would appoint as Treasury Secretary, saying, "Not you, Tom." That did not even come close to landing, and came off as a stall tactic to figure out a name other than Phil Gramm.
  • Obama delivers a strong response on middle class tax cuts, but I can't help but feel it would have worked better coming at the beginning rather than the end of the answer.
  • McCain already writing down notes? He doesn't trust himself to remember his zingers?

Avoiding the question..

He didn't ask about bailout for corporations, he asked about bailout for retirees.. But they both are avoiding the answer.. they aren't answering ..

Did he just adopt HOLC?

McCain?

Re: Did he just adopt HOLC?

Who knows.

Honestly, I don't think it's necessarily a matter of McCain having a bad economic policy; it's that he has NO economic policy.

His health care plan is off-the-rack AEI nonsense, meaningless piffle - present only because one has to "have" a health care plan.

McCain doesn't give a crap about the economy - he'd happily turn the economy over to folks like Gramm.

Re: Jonathan's Debate Thread

McCain's got some weird pacing issues.  He's answering that first question from like three different positions in the room.

Where the heck did the non socialist McCain go?
He wants the guberment to buy up all the homes....

Thank you, my friends

Re: Jonathan's Debate Thread

No, not the homes, the mortgages. Then sell them back at a lower price. Sort of a combination refinancing plus a subsidy. This plays real big with people who bought houses before this market mania -- NOT. Whatever happened to Moral Hazard? I guess that's only for the guy that lost his twenty year job and can't pay the last ten years of his mortgage. No Moral Hazard for speculators that couldn't flip their McMansion. McBush just lost half the conservatives by promising to give money to the profligate.

There's that BAILOUT question again..

Still avoiding answering the real question..
Where is the accountability? Why aren't the CEOS in JAIL?

There isn't any accountability. What about bailing out Americans? Instead, they are talking about helping the corporations that got us into this mess!

Ahh.. finally Obama seems to be answering it.. what about businesses that can't make payroll..

by architek 2008-10-07 05:14PM | 0 recs
Why aren't the CEOS in JAIL?

Well...  on what charge?  It's hard to define what they did wrong.

Yes, it's what you'd like to hear

It's what we'd all like to hear. But this isn't just about us.

Thank goodness Obama knows that.

Re: Jonathan's Debate Thread

These two guys are like boxers who produce incredibly boring fights when their styles are in the same ring together. I can barely stay awake.

Not that I'm complaining. Obama has a foundational lead and a tedious debate won't change a thing.

The VP debate was spirited and memorable but the two presidential versions have been incredibly blase. There hasn't been a threat of audience reaction in either debate. I'd be screaming to mix it up a little bit.

Only 3 things stand out, not that I'll remember them 4 years from now:

1) Obama looks really cool sitting on the chair while McCain is blabbing

2) McCain won't speak above a glorified whisper

3) Brokaw's performance may be the single semi-memorable aspect of this debate, like a grumpy old man fixated on finding something to complain about

Pain,....

Watching McCain, I thinlk he is debating in great pain. Watch him move. Every movement is a struggle. Huge pain. He is trying to think through the pain. And succeeding, for the most part.

"That One"

I wonder how people are going to respond to McCain's comment. Initially, I was impressed with McCain for talking to the person who asked the question, but then later he started to pace around too much.

Overall, McCain seemed to be better at going on the attack and forcing the debate to his turf, talking about cutting spending and dealing with earmarks. However, I wonder what the above comment will be viewed, and his pacing.

I can't tell who won the debate without polling data this time.
