Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

A lot of new numbers today, some of which I have already mentioned, some of which I haven't.

  • Pew polling shows Barack Obama leading by a stunning 53 percent to 39 percent margin among likely voters over John McCain. Weighing heavily on these numbers -- and, specifically, weighing down McCain's numbers -- are Sarah Palin's anemic favorable numbers. At present, just 44 percent of the electorate views the Republican Vice Presidential nominee favorably while 49 percent views her unfavorably, significantly down from 54 percent to 32 percent net favorable rating in mid-September. In contrast, Obama's numbers are astronomical, with 66 percent viewing him favorably and just 28 percent viewing him unfavorably.

  • Lest you think that Pew's numbers are way off, take a look at the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll (.pdf) out within the last hour. Overall, Obama's lead is 52 percent to 42 percent -- not too far off from Pew's numbers. Palin's numbers are actually worse in the NBC/WSJ poll than they are in the Pew poll, with 38 percent viewing her favorably and 47 percent viewing her unfavorably. Obama's numbers are similarly strong as they are in Pew polling, with 58 percent rating him positively and 33 percent rating him negatively.

  • The two polls, of course, could both be outliers -- but from the looks of it they aren't. Today's ABC News/Washington Post daily tracker gives Obama a 53 percent to 44 percent lead among likely voters, and today's Gallup tracker (which I have already mentioned today) shows Obama leading 52 percent to 42 percent in its expanded likely voter model.

  • Update [2008-10-21 20:31:48 by Jonathan Singer]: A McClatchy/Ipsos poll just out has Obama up 50 percent to 42 percent.

This all isn't to say that the time is now to get complacent -- because it's not. Nevertheless, it's also not time to buy into the McCain campaign spin (which, I might add, it seems at least a few in the establishment media are) that the race is clearly tightening.

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

Just hope "Thanks for the warning Joe" doesn't hurt too much.

Biden should campaign with tape over his mouth.

Maybe you would prefer Palin?

At least Joe isn't bilking the government and then claming to be a maverick reformer:

Re: Maybe you would prefer Palin?

Palin actually said that.

BTW, O'Reilly is whipping up Ayers again--"more
than a casual relationship."  I just wish LA Fitness would stop showing Fox News all the time.

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

Y'know... folks LIKE Joe Biden much more than Sarah Palin. You do know that, right? It's precisely BECAUSE of things like this. Palin could not make a gaffe like this, because it is a gaffe that is actually interesting to hear. It can be interpreted, debated, argued on. Palin's gaffes are borne from ignorance that betrays her as the most intellectually lazy and wholly unfit candidate in this cycle or any cycle. And that includes almost all third party crackpots, too. At least they have a plan.

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

Heck, even I like Joe Biden, and his gaffes are always interesting and reasonably harmless, all things considered.  I think he was a really good pick.

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

well I am a missourian and can say that Biden plays really well here.  That is probably because we are a part of "Real America" :)

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

Biden's gaffe is silly and overblown, and that's why it's not having any impact.

Any actual damage from it was likely completely mitigated by the completely tone-deaf McCain camp response: "See, Obama is just like JFK! Even Biden said so!"

Wow... take a minor gaffe and turn it into a comparison between Obama and JFK that Obama's campaign couldn't make themselves for fear of being accused of hubris. Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb.

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

I don't see how anyone would get complacent.... it's very tight in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri, and a bunch of other states...  Even in PA, McCain is going on a kamickaze mission in PA should get people moving...

Maybe people in California, Illinois, and New York state are complacent, but not here in the battlegrounds where the race is going to be one or lost...

Re: Obama Up Big in Big Media Polls

Things are definitely going well. I have Obama up by 7 points in my composite of the trackers for today (weighted by response):

Will the GOP be broke

The GOP started this cycle with a gigantic lead over the Democratic party in cash.  It looks like they will be spending every penny of it just trying to keep this election from being a landslide.

I know that they are still good at raising money, but I think it is going to be much tougher if they are facing President Obama, 58+ Democrats in the Senate and 270+ Democrats in the House.  I would love to see us break the back of the GOP and their money machine that they have enjoyed for so long.

Don't get complacent? Fine
Scream "Diebold" and "The fix is in"?
Forget it.
