You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

When talking to Cenk on The Young Turks late last week, I wondered whether the prominence of Fox News this cycle had something to do with McCain's desperation: if all McCain communicates is disinformation and smear, the official Republican media outlet will obviously be working overtime.

They might get busier: McCain's campaign manager is now publicly considering the Rev. Wright smear:

In an appearance on conservative Hugh Hewitt's radio program, Davis said that circumstances had changed since John McCain initially and unilaterally took Obama's former pastor off the table. The Arizona Republican, Davis argued, had been jilted by the remarks of Rep. John Lewis, who compared recent GOP crowds to segregationist George Wallace's rallies. And, as such, the campaign was going to "rethink" what was in and out of political bounds.

"Look, John McCain has told us a long time ago before this campaign ever got started, back in May, I think, that from his perspective, he was not going to have his campaign actively involved in using Jeremiah Wright as a wedge in this campaign," he said late last week. "Now since then, I must say, when Congressman Lewis calls John McCain and Sarah Palin and his entire group of supporters, fifty million people strong around this country, that we're all racists and we should be compared to George Wallace and the kind of horrible segregation and evil and horrible politics that was played at that time, you know, that you've got to rethink all these things. And so I think we're in the process of looking at how we're going to close this campaign. We've got 19 days, and we're taking serious all these issues."

Let's set aside the ridiculous notion that Rep. Lewis forced the McCain campaign to consider malicious race-baiting. More fascinating is that Davis is telegraphing this smear before it happens. Negative AND inept.

And boy did the competitive primary help Obama - now that everyone knows about Wright, there's not a reporter around that would see such tactics from McCain as anything but desperate.

This is getting ridiculous, because John Lewis attacked him, McCain's going to throw Reverend Wright to the media.
Because Obama refused to do 5700 town halls across the country with McCain, he's accused of "palling around with terrorists".
Why can't the McCain campaign take responsibility for their actions?
"We're losing and we'll do anything to win."
I can't believe that their internal polling isn't screaming that the negative campaigning is NOT WORKING FOR THEM.

This is NOT about saving McCain

This the RNC trying to save downticket Repubs in Red or Purple states.

They are lying to McCain if they are telling him a non-stop Wright Fest wins the election for him?

But, they are certainly will to trash what small amount of ethical credibility McCain has left, to save some asshole congressmen somewhere in the south from getting beat, by making sure they drive every wingnut to the poll.

Re: This is NOT about saving McCain
Back during the primaries, when Romney stepped down and McCain won the nomination by default, I said that the repubs were making McCain the sacrificial lamb and saving Romney for 2012.
They saw the writing on the wall- whoever won the Democratic primary would probably crush the Republican nominee(did they see the economic meltdown coming?) and it would tarnish whoever the nominee was for another run against the Dem incumbent.
McCain is too old to run again, so why not throw him to the wolves (the repubs never liked him much anyway) and while you're at it, give him an anchor (Palin) to hold him down with?

Re: This is NOT about saving McCain

Romney is not a guarantee in 2012 .. hell .. Palin is not a guarantee for 2012 either .. it all depends on the economy .. if the economy recovers .. do any of them want to be a sacrificial lamb?

How dare you! McCain was a POW!  ;-)

But seriously, after watching eight years of the "accountability never" administration, it is clear to me that the answer to your question is "Because they are Republicans."

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

yeah, I don't even want to imagine what it would be like now if Wright hadn't hit the news back in March.

It's pure desperation.  Does anyone honestly think that they wouldn't be bringing up Wright if Lewis hadn't said anything?  When the pundit circles take this up, will any of them ask this question?

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

Rick Davis' statement has absolutely no basis in reality.

I must say, when Congressman Lewis calls John McCain and Sarah Palin and his entire group of supporters, fifty million people strong around this country, that we're all racists and we should be compared to George Wallace and the kind of horrible segregation and evil and horrible politics that was played at that time, you know, that you've got to rethink all these things.

Here is Representative Lewis' statement:

Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse.

During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who only desired to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed one Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama.

As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Governor Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better.

Talk about missing the point, eh?

you're exactly right

John McCain's near cry moment at the debate over Rep. Lewis's comments show his major character flaw: a lack of self-reflection. He thinks anyone who questions his honor is completely baseless. He is unable to see his own actions from an objective standpoint and/or thinks because he was a POW he doesn't have to act honorably in the present.

I am so happy he will never be president.

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

It was inevitable I suppose, and no one tops the Republican base when it comes to rationalizing away responsibility for their actions. All the more reason to break their political back on November 4th. Electing "I've voted with the president 90% of the time" McCain would be like the country putting it's stamp of approval on Bush and his administration, and that just can't happen.

On a sidenote, I just saw moderate Republican radio talk show host Michael Smerconish on MSNBC's Hardball say that he's voting for Obama, a Democrat, for the 1st time in his life. I'm still picking the shattered pieces of my jaw up off the ground.

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

People, turn on CNN. Hillary and Obama are together on a stage talking to a crowd in Orlando, Florida. Hillary's on fire.. she's losing her voice, lol.

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

She is dropping the hammer on McCain.

I think she is probably pissed by them using her as an excuse for the Ayers smear.

They crossed the wrong Senator.

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

When I read the title of this topic I assumed that it referred to what's going to happen to Fox's programming after Obama wins on Nov 4th.  They had a pretty miserable job defending Bush's record... I suspect they have a much more enjoyable time attacking Obama.

Use the smears against RNC
IN particular, DBC should use it in Maine where
afterall Susan Collins is the national co-chair of McCain camp and promised a smear-free campaign. Use it against Norm Coleman also.

I wonder if Davis is saying this for Wingnuts

Why would he telegraph this? This won't help McCain and might well hurt him more. I think it might just be bluff.

Re: I wonder if Davis is saying this for Wingnuts

Announcing plans to negatively attack has been a consistent McCain campaign pattern thie election cycle. I think they're doing that to get the media talking about it in a 'warm up the crowd first' kind of way. Pretty sickening.

Exactly....

And, if they can get the Obama campaign to react, they can say

"See!  They are playing the race card!"

Wow, are these guys overmatched or what?

Axelrod and team make these guys look like it's 1968 or something....

Somewhere in Hell, Lee Atwater is just cringing, saying "is this all you got? why, in my day as King of the smears..."

Re: I wonder if Davis is saying this for Wingnuts

Marc Ambinder said that this is similar to what the Hillary campaign used to do... telegraphing their intentions... and often they didn't follow through... so, they got dinged for being too negative regardless...

It makes sense that the McCain camp would try this... except for their motivate the base portion of thei strategy, they've pretty much emulated the Hillary campaign almost 100%.

Despite somewhat similar infighting

Hillary connected with voters far more effectively than does McCain.  McCain's running on fear-mongering.  Hillary wasn't.

Re: I wonder if Davis is saying this for Wingnuts

Maybe my memory is faulty, but I do not recall Hillary or her campaign ever announcing an intention to attack Obama on the Wright matter. As I recall, they treaded very carefully in these smearish areas, not wanting to be accused of racist attacks. The media had to drag a comment out of Hillary on the Wright matter, she offered none on her own.

But please provide a link to an article reporting on the Clinton campaign announcement of its intention to attack Obama on the Wright matter if I am wrong.

Re: I wonder if Davis is saying this for Wingnuts

I mispoke... Arbinder did not specifically reference wright, but there were times where they telegraphed other negative attacks that never came to fruition...

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...
They're going to raise  Rev Wright ,attack Michelle Obama again, and bring up the bitter " comment,at a time when not only are they down ,but yesterday they got kicked in the balls really hard by Colin Powell.
How will this look to anyone with half a brain in their head?
Those who are walking around with the wind whistling between their ears  already embraced this bullshit ages ago,and I can't imagine it playing to anybody else.
by Lodgemannered 2008-10-20 03:51PM | 0 recs
They don't call them the base for nothing.

They are about to trash what little is left of John McCain's reputation and honor, for the sake of a few southern congress critters maybe holding on to their seats by driving up that lowly base.

Pathetic, really.

Re: You Think Fox News Is Bad Now...

It's at least partly a reaction to Powell's endorsement. They really have milked the Ayer's thing for too long already, and now the widely respected (among R's) Powell has shredded it. They have to move on to something else. It cannot be the scary muslim bit, because Powell also shredded that attack line, and quite eloquently framed it as un-American.

So lets see, what smear is available for which there is no video footage of a prominent, respected, Republican five star General and Bush cabinet officer denouncing it? The have gotta go with Wright, he's all they have left. Obama's very public split with Wright this summer should make this a very weak line of attack indeed, which is why they haven't gone there before.
