Todd's Debate Thread

Once again, John McCain starts out practically hugging Barack, looking him right in the eye and then sitting down and scribbling notes.

Wow, McCain is really nervous starting out.

Update [2008-10-15 22:8:27 by Todd Beeton]:Oh lord, McCain is touting the gang of 14. He does make a good point that he voted for Souter and Ginsberg. "Elections have consequences." Interesting.

Update [2008-10-15 22:13:56 by Todd Beeton]:By bringing up the Lily Ledbetter Act, Barack managed to bring even a question about the Supreme Court back to people's priorities.

Man, look at the gender gap on the CNN focus group as McCain is attacking Obama on choice. Devastating for McCain. He's really losing women. Or women are simply pre-disposed against him.

Update [2008-10-15 22:20:26 by Todd Beeton]:What is up with McCain's eye rolls and his snarls? Someone's going to have fun with YouTube tonight.

Update [2008-10-15 22:30:55 by Todd Beeton]:Second time in a row McCain can't seem to bring himself to refer to Michelle Obama by her name. The first time it was fine, but twice? Does he not remember her name or is he being old school respectful?

Update [2008-10-15 22:30:55 by Todd Beeton]:McCain: "We'll find the money to research autism..." Not with a spending freeze you won't. Cognitive dissonance anyone?

Update [2008-10-15 22:30:55 by Todd Beeton]:McCain's closing remarks are hardly registering on the CNN focus group dials. Once again, no mention of the middle class.

Update [2008-10-15 22:30:55 by Todd Beeton]:Men are not loving Barack's closing statement either. Ouch.

Update [2008-10-15 22:30:55 by Todd Beeton]:Oh, OK, he had them at "tax relief."

Update [2008-10-15 22:32:13 by Todd Beeton]:"Good job! Good job! Good job!" What the creepy hell was that?

Update [2008-10-15 21:39:0 by Todd Beeton]:McCain is such a sad little man. And by the way, Obama clearly wanted Ayers to come up. That's why he brought him up first. Smart.

Update [2008-10-15 21:39:0 by Todd Beeton]:"Let me tell you who I associate with." Nice.

Update [2008-10-15 21:40:18 by Todd Beeton]:Ha. "I think the fact that this has become the centerpiece of your campaign says more about your campaign than it does about me."

Update [2008-10-15 21:47:15 by Todd Beeton]:Shieffer doesn't let Obama respond to that tirade about spending? This is insane.

Update [2008-10-15 21:53:30 by Todd Beeton]:This is clearly John McCain's best debate performance but man, when that grumpy old man act comes out, it is not pleasant. "You gotta really listen to his words...did ya get that!?" Jerk.

Update [2008-10-15 22:1:40 by Todd Beeton]:Whoah, the women in the CNN focus group are way below the middle line on the dial chart as McCain speaks.

Update [2008-10-15 22:1:40 by Todd Beeton]:Nice. Obama: "If you're out there, Joe, I'll tell you what your fine will be under my plan: ZERO!"

Update [2008-10-15 21:24:40 by Todd Beeton]:Wow, McCain is really on the defensive about Bush.

Update [2008-10-15 21:29:38 by Todd Beeton]:Ohh, here it comes. The tone of the campaign is due to Obama's refusal to do townhalls on McCain's terms. Yeah, that's the ticket. This guy is seriously deluded.

Waaaaaaaaahh! What John Lewis said was "unfair!" He sounds like a petulant child. Obama spent more money on negative ads than anyone in history "and I can prove it." Wow, what a whiner.

Update [2008-10-15 21:31:3 by Todd Beeton]:Excellent response from Obama on the issue of negative ads. He did not go on the defensive yet he's put McCain on the defensive. Sucker.

Update [2008-10-15 21:34:11 by Todd Beeton]:Wow, Barack is addressing the mob mentality of the Palin rallies. Ahh, interesting, Barack comes the closest to bringing up Ayers. Where will Schieffer go with it?

Update [2008-10-15 21:35:49 by Todd Beeton]:Obama's core message: Democrats, Republicans and Independents have to come together.

Update [2008-10-15 21:19:57 by Todd Beeton]:I love when McCain says he knows how to do stuff. It's like he has super powers except he just wants us to take his word for it. More McCainian exceptionalism.

Update [2008-10-15 21:21:44 by Todd Beeton]:McCain still thinks he can balance the budget in 4 years? Umm, huh?

Update [2008-10-15 21:23:53 by Todd Beeton]:McCain has been running against spending for 2 years. Does anyone think that's a winner?

Update [2008-10-15 21:23:53 by Todd Beeton]:"Even Fox News disputes it." Heh. Nice.

Update [2008-10-15 21:9:16 by Todd Beeton]:John McCain looking Bob Schieffer in the eye, Barack Obama looking America in the eye.

Update [2008-10-15 21:9:16 by Todd Beeton]:Wow, McCain is really overcompensating with the whole looking right at Barack thing. That's got to be a bit disconcerting to have that stare in your periphery. Still, Barack whipped McCain's you know what with that question.

It's appearing that McCain is not the sort to rise to the occasion under pressure. So far, quite the contrary.

Update [2008-10-15 21:14:26 by Todd Beeton]:I love that Barack just stopped talking to Schieffer about giving people tax cuts and turned to the camera and said "I'll give 95% of you tax cuts."

Update [2008-10-15 21:14:26 by Todd Beeton]:Uggh. He really is treading in right wing territory on taxes here: "Nobody likes taxes, I don't like paying taxes." He caught himself later and said "I don't mind paying more." I wish he was better at reframing taxes as a responsibility and yes, as patriotic. I think McCain just won that tax question.

Update [2008-10-15 21:17:26 by Todd Beeton]:"Thank you, Bob, I just want to get back to home ownership." Huh? What the hell was that?

The CNN Lines

Men are clearly favoring McCain so far, but women are mixed, and for the first time in three debates, I've seen the line go pretty negative (women not liking McCain...)

But Obama is clearly not yet having his best night. It's not game changing, but I hope he gets a little better.

Re: It's Joe the Plumber

McCain is such a bald-faced liar.

And to think I respected him 4 years ago when he defended Kerry and 8 years ago when he lashed out at the religious right.

Re: Todd's Debate Thread

Palin knows about Autism better than most?!?

She has an infant with Downs Syndrome, and she knows more about my 8 year old daughter with Aspbergers?  Really?

Re: Todd's Debate Thread

Pay no attention to the $3 Trillion they added to the national debt, the nearly half trillion budget deficit, and especially the collapse of the economy...

Two missed opportunities
Two missed opportunities
  1. When McCain told Obama that he should have ran against Bush in 2004 becuase he is not Bush, Obama should have told McCain that McCain sure seemed to endorse Bush enthusiastically in the 2004 election(remember that SNL Smigel cartoon short about McCain groveling while it killed him inside after the 2000 humiliation). So if McCain wasn't Bush, he acted like he endorsed the Bush administration and his failed policies back in 2004.
  2. When mcCain said he was repudiating every republican who bashed Obama unfairly, Obama should have asked McCain if he repudiated Palin for making inflammatory statements similar to what other republicans have said.

OK, one missed opportunity

I am watching the Debated on tape delay. I just got to the point where Obama does mention Palin's rallies. Good response by him
