ACORN: McCain's Enemy Of Convenience

As we've documented, the right-wing noise machine is shamelessly using ACORN's work registering low-income voters as both a character attack on Obama, and as a means to justify acts of voter suppression in swing states.

But not only are the accusations a lie, they're flatly hypocritical coming from McCain.

Observe the Republican nominee back in March of 2006, attending an ACORN co-sponsored event that McCain himself headlined. He's sitting right next to Rep. Meek:

ACORN's Bertha Lewis on the photo (via Politico):

"We are sure that the extremists he is trying to get into a froth will be even more excited to learn that John McCain stood shoulder to shoulder with ACORN, at an ACORN co-sponsored event, to promote immigration reform."

So make no mistake: the right-wing efforts to demonize ACORN is pure political desperation. Don't let rumors of an indictment in Ohio fool you. It's bull.

Here's what I want to know:

How does a fraudulent voter registration become voter fraud?  They're two entirely different issues.  The scope of the operation would have to be into international conspiracy levels to coordinate both fraudulent registering and corresponding fraudulent voting on any scale that would influence a major election.  Are the Republicans really assigning that much competance to ACORN?

Compared to the right-wing standbys of simply throwing out people's registrations or ballots based on requiring identification, proof of residence, or small imperfections in ballot procedure, ACORN's supposed fraud strategy really, really sucks.

Exactly. As Tom Matzzie pointed out in the post I linked, just because someone submits a faulty registration for "Mickey Mouse" doesn't mean that Mr. Mouse will show up and vote on election day.

Frankly, at this point, I think that the Mouse is better qualified to vote than some of the masses that will show up on election day. At least he isn't a racist.

ACORN might get indicted, so what?

The Bush Justice Department fired at least one U.S. Attorney for not bringing a bogus vote fraud charge before an election.

If any organizations gets indicted within a month of an election, I'm gonna file it under "indictment probably bogus and motivated by partisan politics".

Kinda off-topic, but not really.  I just wanted to say how awesome Kendrick Meek is.  He always cracks me up when he pulls out that gigantic rubber stamp and uses it when he talks about the Republicans in the House, and he and Tim Ryan work so well with one another.  I couldn't tell you how many times I've been flipping through the channels, stop on C-Span and see Meek and Ryan by themselves just going back and forth with their poster boards and giant stamp bashing the Republicans.

They're really fun to watch and they make it interesting, and it's obvious that they enjoy what they do and do it well.

As for ACORN, it's obvious the Republicans are near rock bottom.  They are just flailing at this point.

OK I AM NOW CONVINCED McCain is on OUR side

He is losing this one on purpose for us ..He is really putting coutry first...since the Palin pick I was really suspicious thats why he did not vet her .

If ACORN is paying its field workers by the individual form turned in, then it is ACORN that is the victim of fraud. By law in many states, ACORN still must submit the bogus paper even though they are aware of the scam.
Also, David Iglesias, former US Attorney in New Mexico was one of the victims of the Bush/Gonzales firings for failing to pursue bogus voter fraud allegations and he states clearly that it was ACORN that the Republicans wanted investigated and charged.
There is a history here. Not surprising that Republicans would target a group that enfranchises minorities and the poor.
