Nope, No Miss Congeniality, He

We've often heard about John McCain's famed temperament and even he himself is quite fond of telling us he's never won "Miss Congeniality" in the Senate, but I guess I sort of never really expected him to put this quality on full display for us all to see. Between McCain's debate performance on Friday and his utterly uncharming turn here in front of the editorial board of The Des Moines Register, it's becoming clear that he doesn't expect to win any popularity contest in the presidential race either. But didn't we learn from Bush that winning the presidency is at least half popularity contest? Sort of have to wonder if McCain is even trying anymore.

What's striking too is his complete denial that his campaign has been anything but 100% honest. As John Marshall says, when backed into a corner on his campaign's lies he really does seem to "retreat to his former POW status" as he becomes utterly defiant. A far cry from the repentent sinner from 2000. I guess Joe Klein was wrong, there is no apology forthcoming after all.

So if he's in no mood for mea culpas and has no intention of charming his way to the White House, does that mean we might be in for the next iteration of John McCain: unhinged, with nothing left to lose? The Politico is reporting that nervous Republicans are urging him to go nuclear on Obama. From what we've seen of McCain lately, is there any evidence at all that he'd shirk from doing just that?

He was nasty in the first debate, but almost inwardly so.

He's going to be lashing out next time.

(In fact, I expect Sarah to be doing some lashing out too......)

that Senator McCain has a temper, and here it's on display.  I think it's useful that we remember the testimony of the former POW who observed McCain was known in the detention center as a very "volatile guy":

The angrier McCain gets,the more he reminds me of Captain Queeg from the Caine Mutiny.
I've always felt that he was unhinged,and the angrier he gets ,the more I'm convinced of it. A true inner self emerges very clearly.

Obama on Payday Lending

Many politicians are no friend to the payday loans industry. In order to raise voter support they choose to ignore what is best for the citizens. Some states including, Georgia, North Carolina, and Oregon have completely driven out the payday loan companies. Politicians still choose to disregard the benefits of the industry even though statistics in these states show a spike in bankruptcy filings, bounced checks and foreclosures. Even though these negative statistics have come to light, several governors are still trying to follow suit. If the efforts to wipe the industry completely off the map prove successful, some possible repercussions might consist of increased unemployment rates, more debt, more foreclosures and an even more inapt economy.

Why do people

attack him on the kindergarten ad? It's defensible on a factual basis, it's the innuendo of that ad that's awful. If you want to ask John McCain about lying, ask him about ads that say Obama will raise taxes.

Also, where are these completely unprepared journalists coming from these days? The person questioning him was damn near stuttering.

He's so bad at lying

That's the part that gets me.  When Bush lies and gets called out, his demeanor never changes.  When McCain gets called out he gets really, really defensive.  He grimaces, he grits his teeth.  He looks like the guiltiest man on earth.
