ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican Debate Thread

Consider this a thread on the ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican debate from New Hampshire. For those who don't have a TV (or who like me are in a city like Portland where the ABC affiliate for some reason is tape-delaying the debate -- thanks KATU, that makes a whole lot of sense), you can watch the debate online here. Otherwise, most should be able to watch on ABC.

As Atrios says, document the atrocities...

Update [2008-1-5 19:31:8 by Todd Beeton]:Internet keeps coming in and out here. By the way, I'm here with Miss Laura from dailyKos and Dean Barker from Blue New Hampshire. The whole press room just let out a loud "ohhhhhhh!" when Huckabee quipped to Romney "which position?"

Update [2008-1-5 19:55:41 by Todd Beeton]:Check out Facebook's new politics page launched tonight. It's registering real time user responses to a variety of questions, including "Is a Presidential candidate's national "electability" a big factor in deciding your vote in the primaries?" Kucinich posted his response:

Position: No, it is not"It's not to me--but it is to ABC/Facebook, who excluded me from the important New Hampshire debate, because I wasn't "a top 4 candidate" yet in the polls. Did you know Clinton/Obama/Edwards refuse to support impeachment, gay marriage, and repeal of the Patriot Act & NAFTA? Or leave Iraq until 2013?"

Update [2008-1-5 20:4:56 by Jonathan Singer]: Wait, did Romney really just go out on a limb in defense of big pharma? Really?

Update [2008-1-5 20:21:39 by Jonathan Singer]: Not that this wasn't already apparent, but Fred Thompson just is not a serious candidate -- and in fact is just a surrogate of John McCain who gets a place on the debate stage. Great strategy for McCain, but kind of embarrassing for Thompson and all those folks in the GOP base who expected Thompson to be their savior.

Update [2008-1-5 20:39:47 by Todd Beeton]:Yep, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, two peas in a pod.

Update [2008-1-5 20:39:47 by Todd Beeton]:McCain's doing a good job of getting some digs in at Romney on his flip flopping. The latest: "I agree, Gov. Romney, you are the candidate of change." Romney has tried to turn it around on McCain, accusing him of personal attacks, but he's on the losing end of these.

Update [2008-1-5 20:39:47 by Todd Beeton]:Interesting, Romney and Guiliani sound like proxies for Obama and Clinton - Romney espousing change, Giuliani espousing his experience. Romney's claim to the change mantle is strained to say the least.

Re: ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican

So Romney's not exactly basking in the glow of his dominating performance in the Wyoming caucuses... are people ready to give up the fantasy that the Michigan Democratic Primary is going to be the undoing of the Obama and Edwards campaigns?

Re: ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican

The protesting candidates may have screwed up in Michigan, but by that time, it is not going to make much of a difference.

Ron Paul

Once again the only Republican to make a sane statement about terrorism gets ganged up on for it.

I suppose Huckabee made a semi-sane statement about Bush's foreign policy some time ago and is getting bashed for it, but now he's backing away from it as fast as he can.

Re: Ron Paul

He is pretty much defining the direction of the conversation too... He's talking more than McCain and Thompson thusfar

I was thinking the same thing!

Re: Ron Paul

Have to sya, that Huckabee was hedging on Bush foreign policy, and I suggest that they will all do the same, as any negative perspective will give the Democrats a highway to the presidency. Isn't that the problem that they all face, especially McCain, who is still alive on the diehard Bush vote alone. McCain will go down with Bush. The rest will go down hedging around the catastrophic Bush administration.

Re: Ron Paul
Dem's foreign policy?  I must have missed that.
BTW... why do you have to post with a picture of a Jew-hating book?

ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican Debate Thread

I am thoroughly unimpressed with Mitt Romney.  What a zero.  How did this guy get elected Gov of Mass let alone become the front runner for the R nomination?

I don't agree with Huckabee on much but he is far more impressive than Romney.

we are endowed by yada yada

OK Huck, McCain just recited that 13 minutes ago

Re: ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican Debate Threa

I enjoyed the spectacle of the Republican candidates (other than Ron Paul) tying the George W. Bush foreign policy albatross ever more firmly around their collective necks.

Re: Welp

I don't know.

I think I saw a hint of sincerity when he was defending Big Pharma.   That's new.

And I think that little whine about evwry buddy bein' mean to him seemed heartfelt.

Citgo ad

I was surprised to see the Citgo ad with Joe Kennedy about selling discounted Venezuelan heating oil to poor people. That should put the wingnuts watching into a frenzy.

Re: ABC News/Facebook/WMUR

Gosh, these Repubs are at each other's throats.

HUH?

Did Huckabee just endorse Obama? Jesus.

Re: HUH?

Seriously.

Caught that, too.

I don't think a GOPer is going to be able to win by saying "I'm more Obama than Obama".

I missed the exchange.  Is that what he said?!

hope You'll show the reality of the MSM

maybe youll care to show us how the press room actively works against hillary in the press room.
I was there in 2000 when they BOOED Gore when he dared to question their fave that year, Bradley.

Bet there will be plenty of groining tonight when she dares to disagree with their "pet" Obama.

Hope you will share those moments.

Re: ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican Debate Threa

Wow.

In the spin room -

The ABC pretty talking head has just informed me that Rudy Guiliani mentioned 9/11 several times.

I'm as shocked as she is.

by zonk 2008-01-05 03:53PM | 0 recs
Rudy Nineleven Giuliani

Joe Biden absolutely wrecked the Giuliani campaign with the "noun + verb + 9/11" comment.

Re: ABC News/Facebook/WMUR Republican Deb.

Although I was flipping back and forth between the Repub debate and the Seahawks/Redskins game, from what I saw, Fred Thompson was actually the winner.  He won because he was the only one there who could credibly unite the economic, social, and foreign policy conservatives.  I agree that makes him that much more vulnerable to the Bush albatross come November, but vis a vis winning the nomination, Thompson helped himself.  Too little, too late?  Probably, which means this debate may put the Repubs in an even BIGGER mess.

McCain was the secondary winner, though the one glove Romney landed on him was the Z-Visa exchange.  Huckabee picked the wrong time to do his John Edwards imitation (bashing special interests); he just reminded the supply-side neocons why they hate him.  Nothing new from Giuliani, except for getting his butt kicked on sanctuary cities by Thompson.  Romney is the consummate empty suit, with a bit of flopping, beached fish thrown in for good measure.  Mitty was the clear loser.  Paul is in his own space-time continuum, so what can I say?

The Repub mess is this: Rudy and Mitt have money but no momentum.  McCain and Huckabee have momentum but no money.  Thompson doesn't have whole lot of either, and then there's Paul.  Where the hell do they go from here????  That level of confusion, combined with the miserable Bush/Republican party poll ratings, should be a source of encouragement for us all.
