Obama 5-1 over Hillary among Young Voters?

CNN just reported that young voters are in fact showing up - perhaps 25% of all caucus-goers, which would be a higher share of the electorate than young people actually comprise (22% of the population).

That would be huge - better than expectations - and if true would probably put to rest a lot of my fears about the media disparaging youth turnout (regardless of whether or not Obama actually pulls out a win).

Update [2008-1-3 21:9:34 by Jonathan Singer]: From MSNBC reading the entrance polls, 57 percent of Obama's support comes from 17-29 year olds. Yeah. Wow is right.

Update [2008-1-3 21:44:21 by Jonathan Singer]: From CNN, young people’s turnout was 25%, which means they out performed their share of the population, which is 22%.

Re: Obama 5-1 over Hillary among Young Voters?

This could be the best news of the night--Young people not only show up in proportion to their demographic numbers, but exceed it? That's just amazing.

Kudos to the Democrats for reaching out to and engaging young people.

great news for Obama

and besides that, its great news for the Democratic party...people that join a party now are more than likely joining the party for life...

Fifty-what?

Exit polls have 17-29ers at 22% so far.  Does that age demographic take longer to leave the polling site?

Re: Obama 5-1 over Hillary among Young Voters?

These are the people who do not know what it is like to lose a pension or health insurance at age 50 and have no place to go

Sorry, this is the uninformed following a lot of empty hot air who don't know what a progressive is.

Grim.

Re: Obama 5-1 over Hillary among Young Voters?

Sounds like young voters, over the last 8 years, have had a good opportunity to see exactly the sort of country (and world) they don't want, and have decided to get involved.

Time will tell which candidate(s) that will help, overall, but for tonight, it seems to have helped Obama.

Overall, of course, that bodes extremely well for Democrats and progressives.
