MSNBC Entrance Polling: Clinton and Obama Lead Dems

For whatever it's worth, that's what the tease on Countdown was. According to Marc Ambinder, CBS News is reporting the same thing -- Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama leading the entrance polling, with John Edwards trailing.

Update [2008-1-3 20:10:59 by Jonathan Singer]: I'm hearing some conflicting reports, but early numbers (and I stress early) that just crossed my desk (not necessarily from MSNBC) look like this:

Clinton 36
Obama 31
Edwards 19
Richardson 5

Huckabee 31
Romney 23
Thompson 15
McCain 12
Paul 9

I have not been able to confirm these numbers, so please take with a big grain of salt. Also, for however good these numbers are, they are early entrance polls that might not reflect what the final results will look like given weighting of precincts, second choices, etc. So, again, please take with the requisite grain of salt.

Update [2008-1-3 20:21:46 by Jonathan Singer]: From Ambinder...

On Dem side, half are first-timers, according to entrance polls... half say they made up their minds early

Re: MSNBC Entrance Polling: Clinton and Obama Lead

Every news outlet so far has listed the leaders in the entrance polls as Clinton, Obama on the Dem side.  I don't know if the order is meaningful or just alphabetical.  That's my one cent.

The DesMoines High School on C-Span

Just said it was a record turnout.  375.

I am not reading anything into it but a lot of older folks.

Re: The DesMoines High School on C-Span

At Lincoln High Edwards for less than 70 in the first round.  They havn't had the second go yet.

I didn't see a count for anyone else.

Obama seems to have a lead here

He was over 140 or 150

Clinton is under 90

No deal

A lot of Biden supporters saying they should dispand .. and many suggesting they go where they where .... to whom ever .. they want to go to.

Re: No deal

The stuff I read on the "deal" was that it was select districts... Obama would be giving Richardson votes in districts he is strong for Bill to get viability and then in others Richardson gives him delegates.  Same with biden.  IF its true.

3 rd count starting

So much for just two counts

Obama way ahead here

But it is amazing how the second tier supporters want to hang on and support their guy or even another second teir candidate.

Please leave the numbers

There's no way those numbers are right.  There are some severe sampling errors no doubt.  Please leave them up so we can see how off they were when all is said and done!

Re: Please leave the numbers

If they are right, this thing is over and (sadly, IMHO) Hillary is our nominee.

Boy this is fascinating to watch.

Re: Please leave the numbers

I'd be very shocked if Edwards only ended the night with 19%

Re: Please leave the numbers

So would I and as much as I like him, I am not sure how he can win without a win tonight unless he pulls  off a NH miracle and finishes first or a close 2nd and plays the comeback kid card.

If true

if the above diary is true.

Clinton wins no matter what.

The word is out that the 2nd tier and maybe even edwards will throw support to Obama just to keep it a race.

If Clinton can show proof she won the ground game in Iowa, she wins.

Please be true.

Re: MSNBC Entrance Polling: Clinton and Obama Lead

Remember, it all comes down to the second choice voting.  Clinton has run as the incumbent, and so those who vote for someone else are likely to also be voting against Clinton.  So, Clinton won't go much higher than the 36 claimed.  Obama and Edwards will probably draw a much larger percentage of the second-vote (particularly Obama), so their percentages are probably floors not ceilings.

Another issue, in my estimation, is where the polling is taking place.  Edwards' strength is outside of the urban areas, so this poll may understate his support.

On the GOP side. . .ouch Romney.  And if McCain isn't in 3rd, do we really talk about a comeback?

Re: MSNBC

The media loves McCain but his party hates him because of his stance on immigration.

Re: MSNBC Entrance Polling: Clinton and Obama Lead

With a grand total of 9 out of 1781 precincts reporting:
Edwards 39%
Clinton 32%
Obama 26%
Richardson 2%

I think the only thing you can read into these numbers is that precincts reporting so quickly must have very light turnout, so these are likely from really rural areas.

Where did you get those numbers Jonathan?

I don't know the truth

but if Clinton leads the final entrance poll #'s by 1 percent. She wins.

"I won because Kucicinch, Richardson, and Biden told their supporters to go for me as 2nd choice"?

That dog won't hunt in America.  Maybe at Msnbc.

Obama better hope these entrance numbers are wrong and they get updated.

If not, all the buzz about EVERY candidate going for Obama 2nd choice kills the bounce.  Maybe if they had shut up about it, it would look genuine.

Please let these numbers hold up!

If so, Hillary might hold on even after 2nd vote

Re: I don't know the truth

I don't think that Obama being the second choice of many lower-tiers, if that turns out to be true, would diminish at all a victory for him, should he win, at least in my eyes

Re: I don't know the truth

A win is a win.  Actual election results beat spin every time.  Otherwise, Joe Lieberman would still be celebrating his 3-way tie for third place.

CNN Bill Schneider

Reports that Dem turnout being driven by 1) women, 2) older voters, and 3) first timers.  If this is true, it seems good for Clinton.  IF it's true.

Chuck Todd, bizarre logic on MSNBC

If Obama wins but doesn't do so with enough Democrats (i.e. by pulling independents) that's a bad thing...

by alydar 2008-01-03 03:25PM | 0 recs
It's hard to believe

You're telling me (if it happens) that all the candidates make a conscious  choice to support Obama for the reason of keeping the contest alive doesn't affect you?

It would mean in a fair fight, Obama lost, everyone ganged up and said, "hey guys, if we let people go where they want for 2nd choice, they prob. divide up and the race is over".  "This way, we got a chance in later states".

That wouldn't be democracy (if it happens). It would be MSM and candidates manipulating caucus spirit

Re: It's hard to believe

Rather, I think that what the candidates do in terms of throwing support to one candidate or another doesn't move many voters.  I may be completely off on that, but most endorsements don't seem to do much of anything.

Re: It's hard to believe

Yes, welcome to politics and the media.  It didn't hurt Edwards that Kucinich directed his supporters over that way in 2004 did it?  It wouldn't hurt Hillary if they directed them to her.
