State of the Union Live Thread

George Bush's final State of the Union address -- sad isn't it? -- is scheduled to begin shortly -- the cabinet is entering now. It's always painful to watch Bush speak for any extended period of time, but this is a must-watch to see how he intends to frame his final year in office (how are his steroids and switchgrass initiatives going, anyway?) Clearly on his agenda tonight is framing the fight over FISA as the weak (and friends to terrorists) Democrats trying to prevent him from keeping Americans safe. I also expect he'll address the economy -- how's he gonna spin that disaster I wonder? And no doubt he's looking to salvage some sort of legacy out of his disastrous presidency. Following his speech, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius will be giving the Democratic response.

Update [2008-1-28 21:4:32 by Todd Beeton]:Christ, MSNBC has let Chris Matthews out of his cage and he literally just said that Bill Clinton is a lucky man because he inherited an economic recovery, which ended just as he was leaving office. He then said that Bush has been "very strong" on the economy. WTF? I know, I know, change the channel. But I was watching Keith.

Update [2008-1-28 21:8:41 by Todd Beeton]:Chris Shays just kissed Bush on the cheek. OK, first of all, what's with the kissing thing anyway, but seriously, he just gave birth to The Kiss: The Sequel! No doubt the Jim Himes campaign is cutting together a video as we speak...

Update [2008-1-28 21:17:38 by Todd Beeton]:If a bill that raises taxes reaches his desk, he will veto it. Oooh, scary. Trying to cast himself as a paragon of fiscal restraint, what a joke. Not even conservatives believe that.

Update [2008-1-28 21:21:9 by Todd Beeton]:Love the shots where the Democrats sit while the Republicans stand and clap. The latest: when Bush said to make healthcare more accessible and affordable: "expand consumer choice versus government interference." Yeah, cuz that's working out so well.

Update [2008-1-28 21:23:20 by Todd Beeton]:Did he seriously just defend No Child Left Behind? Love how he reminded us that it was bi-partisan. Yep, one of the many cases against bi-partisanship, Bush, thanks for making the point.

Update [2008-1-28 21:29:15 by Todd Beeton]:George Bush: champion of science!

Update [2008-1-28 21:30:47 by Todd Beeton]:Did he just say he wants to outlaw the "buying, selling and cloning of human life?"

Update [2008-1-28 21:33:39 by Todd Beeton]:Whoah, Bush just came out as pro-choice! Ohhh, pro-charitable choice. That oldie but goodie. Certainly, one of the more pressing topics of the day.

Update [2008-1-28 21:38:55 by Todd Beeton]:Watching Bush speak just reminds me how little credibility he has on any subject. What's it going to be like to have a president I respect and who's words actually mean something. Looking forward to finding out in a little less than a year.

Update [2008-1-28 21:57:15 by Todd Beeton]:No, dumbass, the invasion of Iraq has already emboldened Iran.

Update [2008-1-28 21:57:15 by Todd Beeton]:If Congress doesn't re-authorize the Protect America Act, "our citizens will be in greater danger." He also got in a shout out to telecom immunity. So that's it? Now he's on to Darfur and Burma. Hmm, strange.

Update [2008-1-28 22:4:49 by Todd Beeton]:Keith: the speech was "George Bush's greatest hits of unfinished symphonies."

Did anyone just see Chris Shays kiss Bush.  Seems like any politician in CT who is trading kisses with Bush is trying to make life hard for himself.

Re: State of the Union Live Thread

Some Bush Quotes
"we have unfinished business before us and we intend to finish it".

No Bush,,, please leave any unfinished business unfinished. We can't take any more crap.

"exports are rising"
Maybe becauser our dollar is so weak Winnipeg is probably wondering why they lost their team while Nashville has one. Watch out Nashville.

I love how Bush lumped in the average tax increase of the richest segment with the upper middle class and made it out like half the country will have a meaningful tax increase under the Democrats.

"I admire your enthusiasm" in reference to those he claims were willing to volunteer higher taxes "the IRS is open to donations and accept checks".
Why Bush? maybe they should follow your example and not back words with deeds.

WILL SOMEONE PUNCH CHENEY IN THE FACE AND WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF HIS FACE?

"if you send me a bill that doesnt cut earmark appropriations in half, I will hand down my veto" and to that Cheney claps because he knows it won't happen as long as the half that stays benefits his oil and military contractor buddies.

Re: State of the Union Live Thread

I wrote a scathing email to NBC president today. I longer watch Olbermann, as he's shown his true colors. I won't be a part of his rating war with O'Rielly.  You should stop watching too.

Re: State of the Union Live Thread

I think we are seeing the true colors of all the Hillaryites here. The same group that said no whining with tough tactics to get endorsements are crying about Ted's endorsment. Olbermann makes one comment they dont like and they stop watching him. Olbermann gave Hillary a softball interview when she entered the race and I did not hold that against him because I don't like living in an echo chamber.

We have seen people question Obama's victory in SC because most of the black people voted for him. Some of these MYDDers never even bothered to question Hillary's victories when most of the white people would vote for her.

by Pravin 2008-01-28 04:29PM | 0 recs
It not that some of us

are 'crying' about the endorsement. I don't like the media's portrayal of the endorsement.

I guarantee GUARANTEE that if Ted Kennedy would have endorsed Hillary, the media would have basically brushed it off as an old drunken guy that once got away with murder just endorsed Hillary Clinton. But, Kennedy endorses Obama and the media act like it's the single greatest endorsement that was ever given in American politics.

by Cleveland John 2008-01-28 04:37PM | 0 recs
Re: It not that some of us

Look at the diaries by two MYDDers(linfar and Undies) on this topic which quote an over the top NOW statement about how Ted BETRAYED Hillary. The outrage expressed by the likes of them have more to do with Ted's endorsement than the media coverage of it.

And I agree the press would have covered it differently. Hillary has had her share of negative coverage, but Obama has too. You do not see snide remarks about Hillary's name the way the media slips up about Obama. And yes, it is bigger news when Ted Kennedy, an establishment politician, goes against another powerful set of the DEmocratic establishment to give a younger guy a high profile endorsement. Ted didn't just give a routine press release. He really made it an event inviting press coverage.

Re: It not that some of us

(I don't think badly of Ted even if I disagree with him.)

Obama keeps saying he is against the establishment but Ted is the establishment.

Do you not now see that the whole change message is just koolaid?

Re: It not that some of us

Agreed. But if Obama is our nominee, I'm definately going to drink some of the Obama koolaid to keep McCain/Romney out :)

Re: State of the Union Live Thread

Liberal media members bash Clintons just as much as others, if not more. Clintons are fair game for all - did anyone hear the out and out ridicule of Hillary on The Ed Shultz Show today?  It was a guest host, to be fair, but Ed is just as bad.

Democratice Response

Looking ahead...I read Kansas Gov.  Kathleen Sebelius's Dem response.  She is soon to endorse Obama, rumor has it, so I thought it would be instructive to read

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/01/28 /speech-text-democratic-r_n_83726.html

Just as I expected, very post-partisan, Obama without the eloquence. Join with us, Republicans! Interesting - who chose her to do the response?

And incidently, without Obama's eloquence it is a lot easier to see the foolishness of this appeal.  Take note.

Re: Gag me.

I wonder if her weak tea rebuttal is what prompted Reid and Pelosi to do a more forceful prebuttal last Friday?
