Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

According to the three polls released on Thursday, he already has.

The results of the latest Rasmussen Reports (895 LVs, 1/16, MOE +/- 3%), Survey USA (470 LVs, 1/16, MOE +/- 4.6%) and Mason Dixon (400 LVs, 1/14-16, MOE +/- 5%) polls show McCain and Huckabee essentially even for the lead.

McCain24292728.4
Huckabee24262524
Romney18171516.4
Thompson16171314.6

That's not to say all polls agree, however, including the latest ARG poll (600 LVs, 1/15-16, MOE +/- 4%), which finds McCain leading by 10 points, and, notably, the Reuters/CSPAN/Zogby tracking poll, the third installment of which was just released early Friday morning, which shows a 7 point race, technically outside of the poll's 3.4% MOE. In some discouraging news for Huckabee, his and McCain's numbers show no discernible movement whatsoever in the 3 day rolling averages.

Candidate1/15-171/14-161/13-15
McCain292929
Huckabee222223
Romney151213
Thompson131412

But we know the limitations of a three-day average when there's just mere days between contests, so instead of Monday morning quarterbacking, John Zogby pulls back the curtain for us today.

"There is movement afoot in the Palmetto State. The precise three-day rolling average is McCain 28.6%, Huckabee 22.3%, Romney 15.4%, and Thompson 13.2%. The very first day of polling McCain led by double digits. In the single day of polling on Thursday alone, Romney hit 19%, while McCain’s lead over Huckabee stood at only 3.2%. If Romney continues to gain after Michigan it will hurt McCain. [...]

"In addition to looking over his shoulder to fend off a possible Romney surge, McCain has to worry that 22% of his supporters are either "very likely" or "somewhat likely" to change their mind – a figure higher than among Huckabee’s supporters (15%) or Romney’s (17%)."

Is the universe aligned against John McCain? First, the seven days between New Hampshire and Michigan are just enough for his bounce to fade, but now the 4 days between Michigan and South Carolina are just enough for Romney to ride a wave in SC even though he's essentially not campaigning there. This guy can't catch a break.

Speaking of the universe conspiring against McCain, on Thursday's Hardball, Chuck Todd brought up yet another factor in the race that could work against him, in Mike Huckabee's favor.

We always think that evangelicals are under-sampled in polling, that they don't show up in as high numbers in polling as they do on election day.

Which merely points to John McCain's essential problem: not only do conservatives have trust issues with him, but they also have candidates they prefer to him representing the "values" leg of the so-called conservative stool (Huckabee) and the fiscal (Romney.) Sure, McCain has the national security conservatives on board but the more the economy goes down the toilet and the war leaves the front page, for South Carolina conservatives, the downside to John McCain far outweighs the upside. And if we see John McCain lose on Saturday, the story will begin to develop that he just can't win anywhere but New Hampshire; in other words, he can't win a majority of Republican voters, which is a problem when you're running in the Republican primary.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

For Huckabee and Thompson, South Carolina is Thunderdome; two men enter, one man leaves.  There is no scenario for both candidates to remain in the race after the 19th.  While Thompson looks down, don't count him out.  He is the only one who is palatable to all three legs of the Repub stool referenced by Todd.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

That is precisely why Thompson scares me.  He appears to be the only Republican who could possibly unite the party.  All the other candidates all have issues with some faction of the party.  What we need to hope is McCain gets crushed (he is the only one with a chance in the GE) and that Huckabee (who is arguably their weakest candidate) wins to even further fracture them come convention time.  This is a gift for Democrats and the Progressive cause.  It only remains for Democrats to pick the best one.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

That's very insightful.  I have no idea if Thompson has a chance, but he absolutely is the only one who can keep the coalition together.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

He's the laziest campaigner on the planet. He makes Bob Dole look energetic.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

You'll notice that comment you responded to didn't claim Thompson had a chance in the GE.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

We should help Huck beat McCain in SC.  In politics, GOOD is running your best candidate, but BETTER is getting your opposition to run their worst candidate.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

Prediction: McCain makes the obligatory trip to Bob Jones University to counter Huckabee's growing numbers. Worked for Bush in 2000, and against McCain, who decided to withdraw his Confederate Army clad boosters at the last minute. McCain is capable of going racist, have no doubts about that.

The universe is pro-McCain, but he may lose anyway

Two of the first three significant contests (i.e. excluding Wyoming) were in states with open primaries, which plays to McCain's strength: independent and crossover voters.  Plus NH Republicans are much more secular than in most states, which also plays to McCain's strengths.

If it weren't for this bit of pro-McCain tilt in the system, we wouldn't even be talking about McCain.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

FWIW, Scott Elliott, the electionprojection.com guy, suggests that the trends favor Huck, Romney and Thompson will battle it out for 2nd, and McCain could fall all the way to 4th in SC.

While Elliott is a wingnut, he's the most intellectually honest wingnut on election trends - his projections were nearly there on '04, and spot on for the Congressional races in '06.

And I believe that SC scenario would be as good as possible for us - keeping Thompson in the race without giving him a real boost, and putting a spike in McCain's chances.

don't bank on McCain in fourth in SC

There are a lot of vets there, and I think he's the only serious GOP candidate who's worn the uniform (I am not counting Duncan Hunter).

Re: don't bank on McCain in fourth in SC

Not that I'm counting on McCain finishing 4th, but the Swiftboaters have mobilized against him. IMO, the reaction is uncertain. However, I do respect Elliott's record for predicting results.

Re: Can Huck Catch McCain In South Carolina?

If McCain loses here, he's probably out.  Look for Romney to get his first bronze.

If Thompson implodes Huck wins.

I regard the candidacy of Thompson as totally preposterous as is that of Ron Paul. The mere fact that they are contending is a measure of the trouble the GOP is in. Huck is formidable. He could have a whole new career as a TV host or stand up comic if he wanted. His line about the confederate flag and pole was hilarious. This guy is going to appeal to the rural red neck primitive vote in a huge way who have basically been shafted by the Republican party and hate its establishment. I know a little about these folks having a summer house in that part of the world. Thompson is as phony as a two dollar bill, you can smell it. I'm going to be he implodes and Huck is the main beneficiary. Just a personal feeling but I've been watching some of Huck's rallies and I was talking to the guy who takes care of my yard down there the other day, he's going with Huck and says many of his aquaintances are. Many think McCain too old which is a very widespread view I've found actually.
