ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

As I noted here, Craig did leave himself some wiggle room in his statement on Saturday by saying it was his "intent" to resign on September 30. Looks like he may use it.

Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, is reconsidering his decision to resign after his arrest in a Minnesota airport sex sting and may still fight for his Senate seat, his spokesman said Tuesday evening.

"It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," said Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman, in Idaho's capital.

"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign September 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight -- and stay in the Senate."

Update [2007-9-4 22:41:39 by Todd Beeton]: OK, so this couldn't get any weirder. Looks like Craig changed his statement to the intentionally vague "intent to resign" after a conversation with Arlen Specter who pledged to come to his defense (which he in fact did this weekend.)

From The Idaho Statesman (h/t mcjoan):
Roll Call, a Capitol Hill political newspaper, posted a voice mail tonight that Craig may have inadvertently left at a wrong number Saturday morning. In it, Craig says he changed the wording in his speech and that "this thing could take a new turn or a new shape."

Whiting confirmed that the message is Craig's. Here is the transcript of the message:

"Yes, Billy, this is Larry Craig calling. You can reach me on my cell. Arlen Specter is now willing to come out in my defense, arguing that it appears by all that he knows that I have been railroaded and all that.

"Having all of that, we have reshaped my statement a little bit to say it is my intent to resign on Sept. 30. I think it is important for you to make as bold a statement as you are comfortable with this afternoon, and I would hope you could make it in front of the cameras.

"I think it would help drive the story that I’m willing to fight, that I’ve got quality people out there fighting in my defense, and that this thing could take a new turn or a new shape, it has that potential. Anyway, give me a buzz or give Mike a buzz on that. We’re headed to my press conference now.

"Thank you. Bye."
Go give Democrat Larry LaRocco some love.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

If the 2006 meme was corruption, perhaps 2008 could be about Republicans who avoid responsibility and consequences for their actions? Like Scooter Libby, The 101st Fighting Keyboarders and now, Larry Craig.

I am positive we could find others and make it stick.

The Republican Senate Leadership may have to shove him off the cliff if he won't go quietly!

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

What better way is there to HELP keep IRAQ off the news stations the next two weeks?  Have them talk about Larry Craig's case instead.

I'm betting Senator Craig has threatened the Bush Admin saying he will vote WITH the Dems on Iraq if he is forced to resign.

Simple.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

Larry Craig: Heeee's Back and Fab-u-lous!

Thank the election fairy, Larry Craig has just un-resigned!

It's as if Craig is feeding his secret desire to suck . . . um, elect Democrats, and scare those ungrateful fundies  -- for whom he's carried so much water -- as far away from the polls as possible.

At this moment, there are Republican politicians across country doing spit takes over their dinner news from Fox. (I only hope their families know the Heimlich maneuver.)

Oh Larry honey, I know those meany Republicans thanked you for your years of service to the evil empire with a kick in the pants, but let me be the first Democrat to bless you for your hissy fit flip flop.

The longer your hypocritical ass is in office the more sunshine you cause for progressives.

We're grateful, aren't we, boys and girls?

So let's all think happy thoughts and send a pocketbook of rainbows to the new Great White Hypocrite who, every day in every way, is improving the chances for Democrats, even in parts of the country so red they should blush.

Oh Larry, for once you do your people proud!

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

Well, say he stays on. The GOP then has the task of pretending everything's fine with their closeted gay friend and that they can go back to business as usual (not). Or maybe Craig could become an independent... Who knows?

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

I read somewhere(probably the NYT) that Craig was really surprised and devastated by the lack of support from his fellow Senators.  His reconsideration may be based on how they forced him out.  According the article, Mitch and Trent basically told Larry if he didn't leave, then he would be subjected to Bob Packwoodlike (disgraced former D-OR Senator) hearings.  They did this while they stripped him of his committee assignments.  I think Mitch and crew is going  be really pissed if Craig doesn't fall on his sword and leave after-all.

I'm afradi you've got your facts a bit messed up re Packwood.
He was froced to resign and then-Rep. Ron Wyden won the seat in a special election.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

To me it shows the man is off the wall. It also says alot about the Republican Party.  Never apologize and never explain.  Let him stay in the Senate and let everyday be another embarrassmant, if that's what he wants.  It makes the Democrats look better and better in the eyes of the American public.  I feel sorry for Republicans.  They are clueless.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

In 14 months it will be the end of Midnight in Miseryville with the Republicans.  Let every little hypocrite and pervert go back and spend more time with his or her family.  These so called family values Republicans never valued the middle class families they tried to hoodwink with their talk of being the party of God. Soon it will be Morning in America again and we will have another chance to change this country. When we sweep Congress and we will, we need to change every policy and rewrite every bill these Republicans enacted in the middle of the night during these dark years. If we don't show we can run the country better than this mob we will all have God to answer to. Remember the saying -- a new broom sweeps clean.

Craig Should Sue Specter for Legal Malpractice

I'm not an expert on the subject, but in the eys of the law this matter is done with, and even if Criag's lawyer is Jesus h. Christ, it will be exceptionally difficult for Craig to withdraw his plea and the subsequent conviction.

That said, Run, Larry, Run!  Craig on the ballot in 2008 would guarantee a LaRocco victory.  I still expect he will be gone on 9.30.07; he will be primaried if he's not.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

Senator Arlen Spector has come to Craig's defense, stating that he would be exonerated at any trial. It is widely believed that Mr. Spector would base Craig's legal defense on a "single-stall" theory.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

This is the best damn news for the Democrats. I want him to stay. Let's face it. What he did was not such a major crime. Other politicians routinely get away with stuff like DUIs. Look at our own Kennedy family. But the real reason I love it is the Republicans are going to have to put up with him until the end of his term and the controversy could possibly help elect a Democrat if this guy can manage to squeak by in a republican primary.

The only reason this case is big news for us is Craig's hypocrisy. The only reason this case is big news for the mainstream is because most people are a bit homophobic, including democrats. Hell, even I routinely find myself snickering when I hear about a gay controversy only because I find the the aesthetics of the act not so palatable. But when I think about it, the morality of the act does not bother me even if thinking about the mechanics of the act brings out the juvenile Butthead in me.

Re: ID-Sen: Craig Reconsidering Resignation

If Craig does not resign by Sept 30. The ID GOP will issue a primary challenge against the Senator. Craig loses in the Republican Primary- He loses his head and pulls a Lieberman- decides to run as an Independent expect in Lieberman's case- Lieberman had strong support from Republican due to his Republican Ideology. Unlike Lieberman- Craig does not have crossover appeal. Democrats have a formidable candidate in the ID US Senate Race- Larry LoRocco.
