Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

This is a candidates' post for Chris Dodd. I am not connected to the Dodd campaign.

Yesterday was a terrible day for the country. Yet again Republicans stymied the efforts of Democrats to correct the nation's course on the Iraq War and on restoring the Constitution.

Senator Chris Dodd led in those fights yesterday. He co-sponsored and led the fight on restoring habeas corpus. He was a co-sponsor of the Webb Amendment. Republicans obstructed votes on both of these measures. On the fate of the habeas bill, Dodd said:

"America's moral standing, and with it the security of the United States, suffered another setback today, atop a pile of setbacks that has accumulated over the past six years. The outcome of this vote is both symbolic and tragic. Each of us in the Senate faced a decision either to cast a vote in favor of helping to restore America's reputation in the world, or to help dig deeper the hole of utter disrespect for the rule of law that the Bush Administration has created. Unfortunately, too many of my colleagues chose the latter, and my disappointment runs deep. But I will not rest my case with this vote. Instead, this defeat will only deepen my resolve to restore the rule of law and with it American security, for far too much is at stake - for every American - to simply give up the fight."

Regarding the defeat of the Webb bill, while this is no doubt disappointing, the Congress has more tools in its arsenal. Senator Dodd knows this and that is why he is leading the fight to secure pledges from his Congressional colleagues to not vote for any further funding of the Iraq War without a date certain for ending the Debacle. The Dodd Challenge:

I cannot and will not support any measure that does not have a firm and enforceable deadline to complete the redeployment of combat troops from Iraq. Rather than picking up votes, by removing the deadline to get our troops out of Iraq you have lost this Democrat's vote.

Leadership now demonstrates the type of leader a future President will be. Dodd is demonstrating the type of leaderswhip we need in our next President.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

The more I hear about Chris Dodd, the more I like him.  He's thoughtful, intelligent and he's right on the issues I care about.  Perhaps more importantly, his words are more than just words - he backs them up with action, and he's been serving his constituents for years with honor and integrity. He's definitely my second choice now.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

I agree with you on all points. Dodd is my #2.

Edwards/Dodd?

Now if we can just get the voters to realize that Obamillary is NOT the answer.....

Dodd is also my second choice

but I would rather keep him in the Senate, where we need strong leadership in the Democratic caucus.

If he is on the ticket and wins, we lose a Senate seat in CT.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

Yeah he is my 3rd pick right now.  Good guy... too bad he hasn't gotten more traction in the polls.

at the Harkin steak fry

Dodd got a huge response at the point of his stump speech when he promises to restore the Constitution of the US on day one of his presidency.

Democrats are hungry for leadership on these issues.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

Dodd's presence in this campaign means Obama and Clinton can't play the "it's different in the Senate" game. Just think how close we came to having two strong Democratic Senators from CT.

BTD, did you catch the interview with Dodd

On the Diane Rehmn show?

You can listen to it here if you missed it. They apparantly stopped doing pod casting unfortunately, so you are stuck with Windows Media or Real Player.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

To be an effective leader, you need to have followers.

I support Dodd's position and I hope he gets a sufficient number of his colleagues in the Senate to go along.  That's the true test of his leadership ability, as opposed to simply taking the position in the first place.

If he's just going to be out there on his own, then he should be aware that the position of Russ Feingold is already taken.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

Why do we all agree that the media is a corporate whore and still believe every poll it puts out? If the media says Hillary is the front runner, she becomes the front runner. If they say Dean is unelectable we believe them and vote for Kerry. The Republican controlled media choses the candidates and we accept it as gospel. Dodd may lead on important issues, but issues don't sell the soap, image sells soap. To paraphrase Mr. Twain, if you don't watch television you are uninformed, if you do watch televsion you are misinformed. We might as well shop at Wal-Mart for our Presidential candidates. We have become consumers instead of citizens. "I'd like a super jumbo sized box of Hillary and a couple cans of Obama. Yes, just put it on my credit card."

Senator Dodd has moved up to

#2 per many commenters here and at DK.  But the commenters also say he stands for everything they believe in.  Query:  why isn't he #1 for those commenters?  Puzzling.

Re: Dodd Leads On The Important Issues Now

I wish all of the presidential candidates treated civil liberties (aka constitutional freedoms) as seriously as Senator Dodd does.

I don't think his attempts to delay the inevitable collapse of the housing bubble are helpful, but that's a lot less important than preserving (or more accurately, restoring) the foundations of a free society.

Re: Unanimous Consent Objection

Cloture is the end to debate, if cloture is not invoked, no vote on the issue can occur.  On an issue limiting the war, we want cloture invoked, 60 votes in the affirmative tallied and the bill in question will then be voted on.

Cloture is designed to end/limit filibusters, Republicans have adapted the process to make filibustering easier and quicker.

I am proud to work for Chris Dodd's Presidential Campaign

Some balance - Dodd's ties to insurance industry

Dodd possesses many positive qualities and is standing up strong on several key issues I care about.  At the same time, on issues pertaining to our civil justice system and access to justice throughout his career Dodd has sided with corporate interests, in particular the insurance industry which is highly influential in his state.

HRC and Obama set records in fundraising in the first quarter.  Which Democratic candidate, however, was most favored by the insurance industry?  The answer is Dodd.

Why would the insurance industry show such loyalty and support to a Presidential candidate polling below the margin of error unless they saw value in their "investment" irrespective of Dodd's chances of winning the nomination?

Re: Some balance-

Make sure Trey Rentz posts on the right day and announces his post as a Richardson supporter post.

He did not the last time.

Re: Some balance-

Talk to Jerome about that.  I have no contact or connection with Trey.  I agree, Trey should (as I assume is the case) identify that he's been asked to post as a Richardson supporter.
