Update [2007-9-19 17:46:52 by Todd Beeton]: So far, Republican Senators Hagel, Coleman, Sununu, Smith, Snowe and Collins have voted Aye (Lugar, Voinovich and Specter all voted No, not sure if they were among the fence-sitters Democrats were hoping to turn.) Warner voted no as he said he would.

Update [2007-9-19 17:55:39 by Todd Beeton]: Cloture on amendment failed 56-44. "Amendment has been withdrawn." Now they're about to vote on the useless McCain "sense of the senate" amendment. I understand that there was an agreement that this amendment would require 60 votes to pass.

Update [2007-9-19 18:14:31 by Todd Beeton]: The McCain amendment goes down too, 55-45.

It went down 56-44.  Lieberman, of course, voted No.  Can someone give me a good reason he should still be a committee chair????

At least make them filibuster Jimmy Stewart style. As it is, they only have to say,"Nyah! Nyah! Nyah! Takes 60 votes!" and then WALK OUT!!!

This is some sort of "Gentlemen's Agreement" to preserve the "Decorum and Prestige" of the Senate.

I say, "Let's give them a taste of Chicago back alley fighting".

yeah, this amendment got 56 in July WITH Warner. If Warner had remained supportive, I bet his advocacy could have brought 3 more over for the 60. So much for any boldness or independence that may have come with retirement.

Nuclear option is sounding more and more appealing. Rethugs don't believe in democracy, or most votes would be 50+1 to pass. And since our Democratic leaders come from the boneless chicken ranch (a la Larson), they don't know how to stand up to the rethugs either. So just why are we NOT forcing them to actually filibuster all these bills? Too much to ask of Reid and Pelosi? Boo hiss to both of them!

But didn't leadership change hands in the wake of Jefford's switch?

Or did Jeffords switch before a new Congress was seated?

At any rate I am sure the leadership doesn't want Jomentum out there giving any Zell Miller type speeches at the Repub Convention in '08.  I don't.  It is not helpful.

If Joe Weaselman gave a speech at the Republican Convention, it would be a tremendous blessing to the Democrats. Joe is a turncoat! Americans don't like liars and Joe is right up there with his "kissin' cousin" Presidunce George W. Bush. They are BOTH jokes; punchlines; not to taken seriously and most certainly, NOT to be believed!

Zell had his impact

It wasn't earth shattering but it had effect.  It gave them a former Dem Senator and Gov. (he was gov of GA I think) to trott out.  The media gave it coverage.  It wasn't helpful.

Not imagine of it was the former VP nominee.  There would be milage there.

When Dems take the Congress in '08 and have a true majority, not dependent on Joe Weaselman or any so-called "moderates,"  I sincerely hope that they will stick it long, hard, and strong to all the closeted, cowardly, duplicitous, lying bastards that call themselves Republicans. How many times do you have to get screwed by these guys before you realize that, in reality, they don't give a damn about America, the troops, justice, fairness, truth, the environment or the Constitution. They are rapists - we are just their victims! The Dems need to STOP crying, "Don't taser me, Bro.," and realize that the only way that will happen is when they start to FIGHT BACK! GIVE NO QUARTER!
