Tom Harkin Steak Fry

The Democratic candidates have gathered at the Tom Harkin Steak Fry in Indianola, IA today where, David Dayen reports back, a record-setting 12,000 people have gathered this year.

The candidate speeches have begun with Obama going first. He  made news by announcing that he will not support a funding bill that does not contain a timetable for withdrawal.

Richardson followed with a funny line about global warming: "Al Gore was right, we just hope he doesn't get in the race." Dayen also notes Richardson echoed Dean with a call to "take our country back."

Hillary Clinton is up now and as Harkin was introducing her, the crowd started chanting "Hillary Hillary!"

The speeches are being covered live on C-SPAN (livestreaming HERE.) Also Iowa Independent is liveblogging it.

Are you watching? Are you there? What do you think?

Update [2007-9-16 16:41:9 by Todd Beeton]: Hillary Clinton had a good line. She said that the day after she is elected (she won't wait for inauguration) she'll send representatives to travel the world and send the message: "the era of cowboy diplomacy is over, America is back!"

Update [2007-9-16 16:56:11 by Todd Beeton]: Chris Dodd is delivering a barn burner of a speech. A lot of Democratic pride but also some criticism of Democrats for not "standing up for its values and its principles." He said "it's about time we stood up and said we want our constitution back." Restoring the constitution will be the first thing Dodd does as president.

Update [2007-9-16 17:9:24 by Todd Beeton]: John Edwards is echoing the rhetoric we heard from him at the YearlyKos debate: taking Washington back from the entrenched special interests, not replacing corporate Republicans with corporate Democrats and returning the power to the people. C-SPAN keeps cutting to supporters in the crowd who brandish signs and cheer him on. Seems as though his support is the most enthusiastic. I liked his line about universal healthcare -- if a candidate has a healthcare plan that does not cover every man, woman and child in this country, ask them "what man, what woman, what child in America is not worthy of healthcare?"

Update [2007-9-16 17:33:20 by Todd Beeton]: Joe Biden gave a tight heartfelt and, as he called it, serious speech. "This war must end! This war must end!" He cited his plan for Iraq including getting our combat troops out of the civil war and acknowldeging the fact that Iraq can not be centrally controlled. He actually has quite a vocal and well-positioned contingent yelling "Let's Joe, Go!"

Just got done seeing HRC's speech on C-Span.  She was actually better than i have ever seen her at a rally like this.  She was actually really motivating and, hmmm, even, dare I say, inspiring?

"I'm a woman, can't you see?  Make history with me."

What a joke of a speech.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

Actually, its origin is as the rallying cry for Chavez's United Farm Workers Union -- which was co-organized by Dolores Huerta, an early Clinton endorser. I heard her lead crowds for Clinton back in May with Yes, We Can! - ¡Sí, Se Puede! and nobody would claim that she does not have the historical bona fides to appropriate the call.

I know you've got better stuff than this in your arsenal, Blue Diamond!

What an idiot, Hillary Clinton is.

"Vote for me, I don't have a penis."

That's basically all that she is saying.

I'll turn my television set back when this crap is over with.

Hillary Clinton is appealing to the Dumbest Common Denominator, which is what people who base a "PRESIDENTIAL" vote on gender, are.

Maybe someone should ask Hillary Clinton if she thinks Karen Hughes would make a great President, since Hughes has also given birth to children.

Re: I'm not superficial.

"SHE" made a superficial sales pitch.

I am so glad that all women aren't superficial.

That ROVIAN TACTIC of the Clinton campaign is meant to SLAP MEN, not women.  Meant to make some men feel "guilt" if they don't support Hillary Clinton, like they aren't doing it just because she's a woman, instead of the fact that she's a corporate Democrat and an incrementalist.

For some women, they'd probably agree with me that her saying that is ridiculous.

Re: I'm not superficial.

by areyouready 2007-09-16 02:06PM | 0 recs
Re: I'm not superficial.

Clever.  You used the same tactic that Hillary Clinton did in her speech.

To even ACCUSE someone of lacking self-respect and hating smart and determined women, just because they don't support Hillary Clinton is an insult in and of itself, and a sign that you have a low level of intelligence.

The only thing that Hillary Clinton, as a potential nominee "threatens", is Democratic House and Senate seats in 2008.

Most men, like those on Dailykos, DU, or MyDD, love intelligent and determined women.  We don't view women as property.

We view them as EQUALS, so we are going to equally criticize their politics.  Women here should do the same.

Hillary Clinton used a Rovian tactic, plain and simple.

Re: I'm not superficial.

I wouldn't even have made a big deal about it if even one of her supporters would have just agreed that Hillary Clinton saying "make history with me beginning in Iowa...so that your little girls, blah, blah, blah" was a shameless ploy.  The type of things that Karl Rove does on a regular basis.

But when they just defend that crap, which I know that they don't really believe, it makes my blood boil.

I can't help it, even though I do feel bad after my emotions get the worst of me, and I call people stupid or naive:

Finally, the dominant Ti function means that the INTP takes his interests and beliefs very seriously. Honesty and directness when explaining these interests are usually displayed. INTPs detest facades and particulary dislike people who exhibit them. Equally, those kind of people also dislike INTPs and avoid them at all cost, for they know that the INTP will see right through them. The INTP's serious nature also makes them almost immune to mockery and being made fun of, at least when face to face with their mocker. If someone attempts to make a sarcastic, mocking comment about an interest of an INTP, the latter will defend himself with a pure, almost naive seriousness, explaining his position with a severe exactness, wielding his words like swords. This almost always disarms the mocker who does not expect such a penetrating defence. The INTPs defence usually also contains a subtle but biting attack thrown back in the mocker's face, chiefly because the INTP cannot entirely hide the fact that he believes his opponent to be stupid.

Re: I'm not superficial.

Hillary's supporters do not do her any favors on the "internets". They offer, bar none, the stupidest political arguments that you will see on Democratic blogs, other than those of rank wingnut trolls.

It is one thing to support your candidate.  It is another thing to offer patently bogus arguments that insult the intelligence of all involved.

Like many informed Democrats, I am leaning towards Edwards, accepting of Obama, and hoping for Gore.  But that doesn't mean that I would withhold criticism of any of them, if I thought they screwed up.  For instance, I still maintain that Gore ran a lousy campaign in 2000, Obama was a fool for sticking by Lieberman in CT, and Edwards caved on his war vote.  Hell, I even criticized Edwards for his cheap shot at Hillary's wardrobe in a past debate.

BTW, I too am an INTP. I don't recall that portion of the personality type before but it is dead-on bullseye.

p.s. stop procrastinating.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

It is ROVIAN to make a sales pitch, "MAKE HISTORY WITH ME STARTING WITH THE IOWA CAUCUSES."

She apparently thinks her positions on the issues aren't good enough for her to actually win the nomination once the voting starts, so she instead decides to appeal to the DUMBEST COMMON DENOMINATOR, by appealing to tribal instincts, in this case, superficiality.

Don't be sorry for me.  Be sorry for yourself, because you will be the one who pays in the end.

They say that a prophet is never welcome in his own house.  The message, is someone telling the truth if other people don't see it, will always be ignored, just like I was right about everything about the 2004 election, and I'm right about everything I'm saying now.

You know, some people actually get paid a lot of money just to say the things that I am saying.  Just ask Karl Rove, Bob Shrum, and so on.

Clinton is lacking in college for all

She wants to make tech training and jobs for those who don't make it to college.

Got to love Edwards in College for those who want it! Available to all.

by dk2 2007-09-16 12:53PM | 0 recs
Ah, no. She has advocated

affordable college for all, but she recognizes most young people won't finish college and many won't attend at all.  This isn't just a matter of affordability.  Newsflash!  Some young people don't want to go to college, and many jobs require additional training(which is what she is advocating) for jobs but NOT college degree's.  In fact, a liberal arts education often isn't applicable to jobs in fields such as mechanics or even truck driving(a thriving field).  I'd be very surprised if JE did not share her views.

News flash back!

Many more would if they could.  The enrollment in states that give scholaships from the lotto money proves that if they have it many more will go.

Re: News flash back!

She has plans to make college affordable.  This is such a typical elitist attitude.  Many jobs require a different sort of education than a liberal arts college degree.  We have to address everyones needs.  There are opportunities in this economy and certainly the coming green economy that can not be realized just with college education. Imagining that college is the only option is actually not helpful to young people who want jobs and training, but not necessarily a classroom style education.

by bookgrl 2007-09-16 01:36PM | 0 recs
Re: Ah, no. She has advocated

I've heard Clinton give a little background on her call from technical training. Specifically her talking to car dealerships who can't find young auto mechanics to hire -- good, solid working class jobs that go wanting because we aren't doing a good job training young people.

I think this is one of the stronger components of her education pitch.

by hwc 2007-09-16 01:40PM | 0 recs
Re: Ah, no. She has advocated

It still isn't the same as college if they want it!

It's great for those who want it because that is what profession they want, but it is a alternative choice to those who can not afford college!

College for those who want it is better!

Re: Ah, no. She has advocated

A liberal arts education may not be applicable to this or that but it is a well rounded education that allows a person to "reason" almost any given situation. We need a lot more of that.

Re: Well, I find you hypercritical.

These are questions that I wish she would answer:

On Iraq, why did you say the troop surge was working in August, yet suggest Petraeus was lying about its gains?

Re: Well, I find you hypercritical.

She did say the surge was working in Al Anbar, which was an accurate statement, but she never said Patraeus was lying about the gains in Al Anbar.

She did vote to cut off funding, mainly as a symbol to the President to urge him to change course. She believes America needs a small force in Iraq because if you have not noticed, there are still many terrorist around Iraq.

Re: Well, I find you hypercritical.

Then she is being deceptive to say she will end the war with a residual force in Iraq of approximately 60,000 troops or more which will engage in combat with the result of more american combat fatalities.

How many more americans will die with Hillary's plan for leaving a residual force in Iraq if she win's the presidency?

I have been to war so this is no academic exercise on my part.

Re: Well, I find you hypercritical.

I don't see deception considering she has publically stated we may need a residual force. Deception will be saying we don't need a residual force and then leaving a residual force once President.

The only Democratic candidates who want a pull out NOW is Richardson and Kucinich. You should not asking how many more soldiers will die, but how to we pull out effectively and in a way that does not further threaten the security of Iraq, the region and the U.S.

Re: Well, I find you hypercritical.

Why do you believe that right wing frame of those issues.

This reminds me of 1968 of those who said we could not leave vietnam because of security in the area and the spread of a regional conflict with the Communists taking over.

They were wrong then and are wrong today.

Edwards advocates only troops in Iraq for protecting the embassy and humanitarian workers,

Other forces in the region if necessary for Al Queda operations. This is a difference from the other two front runners.

"You should not asking how many more soldiers will die, but how to we pull out effectively and in a way that does not further threaten the security of Iraq, the region and the U.S."

I don't believe this meme from the right wing establishment.

We need to pull out as quickly as possible. We do no good staying in Iraq as an occupying force. The longer we are their more americans die for nothing.

Have you ever been in combat. I have been in combat in Vietnam and I know the horror and destruction of war. It is easy for you to talk about staying because you have never probably been to war and it is of no consequence to you.

In the final analysis Iraq will fall or become some sort of government on their own without america proping them up.

My prediction, is that we will eventually be forced to leave and their will be chaos and violence as their is now.

John Edwards can be so naive.

If his health care plan costs $90-120 billion dollars, and you can save $120 billion through cost saving measures that are included in his plan, then if the plan only costs $90 billion, you make $30 billion.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

He does that when he's really serious. He used to spit all the time back in 2004. I know. I was his supporter and I analysed everything. It used to annoy me.

I can see Joe Biden.  He's going to go after John Edwards over that "funding bill" line.

Obama / Edwards 2008

There's no doubt about that now.

All I saw Dodd doing was rehearsing for Vice President.

So OE says Hillary Clinton is an idiot.  Why the Hate?  Your childish behavior does not help your candidate.

If you smoked crack, should I hate your parents?

I don't have "a candidate."  I support one with money and my vote, that's it.  Beyond that, I don't have anything, and neither do you.

What do I think?

I think there is TOO MUCH reporting on a steak fry and speeches and hardly any about the protest in DC.

As the netroots and bloggers, we should all be ashamed of ourselves for not promoting and coving the protest in a BIG way!

no, i'm on the left, but i dont support communism and think it brings more harm than good to a society.

Re: What do I think?

not what I mean.

The protest were not about communism. The majority of people there were not communist or about communism

In all protest you get different groups. They were just one of many.

We on the left are lame for not seeing through that and supporting the protest.

Re: What do I think?

ahh gotcha - the thing is, PSL uses it as a breeding ground. my cousin was swept up into it because she went to an ANSWER protest here in NYC. Now she is off the wall.

Almost everyone in PSL is in ANSWER and i dont think the groups are mutually exclusive anymore.

She copied all of them because she knows she looks like a fool talking about polls and "I'm in it to win it !" all the time. That was getting old.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

I am not sure, not totally sure you understand, that The HIll's clarion call:

"the era of cowboy diplomacy is over, America is back!"

Is going to be perceived by the other nations of the world as such a great thing.

Mexican-American War...

The Phillipines...

Vietnam....

Lebanon...

Israel....

I thought The Hill had all this great 'experience'. This statement shows just how laughable that meme is. Of course she wasn't saying this to the folks overseas.

Nope....

This was for the vast mass of Americans who still think people over there like us.

In short, for the fat fools glued to their TVs and their gas-guzzlers who believe we give the most foreign aid of any nation.

Sorry, Hill no low-info voters hangin' here.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

I just got back from it (skipped the Biden speech as he makes me sick). There were a LOT of people who left, or at least exited from the front after Obama's speech, mostly younger people though to be honest all of the "big three" had lots of younger operatives in the crowd.

I was impressed by Hillary's passion and intensity, and while I will class it as "shrill" in my efforts to work against her, I must honestly say it made a favorable impression on me.

Obama was good with the not funding but again I just felt like he was speaking in abstract, not nearly as concrete as the other speakers were. I really want to like Obama but I just can't.

Richardson and Dodd both echoed words about the national service program that I support (and would definitely take part in, debt or no debt). Richardson said some good things especially in regards to education and energy. I wish Dodd were viable and Richardson was the VP.

Edwards was solid and good as always some strong populist words but he talks so much about the poor I wonder if he makes the middle-class feel like he will ignore or hurt them with that focus.

I am still an Edwards leaner.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

I watched Hillary's speech on C-Span. I love her passiona and intensity, but I agree with you she's almost shouting... lol. Not sure whether it's working well on the spot. Glad she's left a good impression on you.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

I thought she was a bit hoarse and shrill.

Nothing special in her speech and to me it certainly didn't stand out.

I thought Edwards gave the best speech of the group.

For disclosure, I am not an Edwards supporter yet.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

Look , man you use of " shrill " is ridiculous . You have already made your point in your comments that you don't see her in favourable light , so I won't take you seriously.

Using the word " Shrill " doesn't help your case , tell me how did Chris Dodd sound . Did he sound shrill ?

Hillary bellowed.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

Shrill means loud screeching sound which is un-pleasant to the ear.

Un-fortunatrly Hillary has a tendency to sound like this. Too bad she doesn't have Bill's rhetorical skills.

Yeah, Biden's speech focusing on ending the war in Iraq wasn't worth listening to. It's not like he even has a plan for bringing about a political solution. Move on, nothing to see here....

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

As far as John Edwards goes-he says lots of the right things now that he has been running for President for 3-4 years but I can't stop wondering how, in this day and age of global warming and care of the environment, could he build a 28,000 sq ft house-with an indoor squash court no less (imagine how much energy it would take to light that baby)-that's a Walmart for goodness sake-How can he justify that and talk about the environment- can someone explain it to me?

Hillary gave her usual well prepared laundry list of stuff. In addition, she loves to tell people what they want to hear. I have been noticing this more and more.

Liking Biden more and more for his pasion.

Like Edwards too.

Obama is seriously looking strong. It amazes me how far he has come and how he is giving everyone a run for the money. Just look at his organization! Gotta give him credit. Liked when he spoke of himself having the two decades of experience. l'm liking what I see!

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

How can you say Obama is looking strong? Sure he has lots of money and can afford big support on the ground but honestly- his poll numbers are flat at best- If he were a woman he wouldn't even be in contention- no way-  He's the future for the party - too bad he couldn't wait until  he had some gravitas.  As one of the pundits put it-he's a great first date but oh that second -not so good-

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

I watched tonight.  Saw all but Obama, who I chose not to watch.

Watched the rest, and loved what I saw.  Everyone was on fire.  So much passion, so much fire.  Everyone provided great style and substance.

While I love Edwards, and he was great as always, I really liked Biden's speech.  Hillary was great, as was Dodd.  Richardson provided a lot of bold ideas but I think he's dreaming a bit.

Of the 5 I saw, any of them will work for me.  Unlike 2004, I really am finding myself having less of a preference.  Maybe this is what George Bush has done to me.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

Hillary Clinton had a good line. She said that the day after she is elected (she won't wait for inauguration) she'll send representatives to travel the world and send the message: "the era of cowboy diplomacy is over, America is back!"

Kind of ironic, as that line is basically a staple of the stump speech Obama has been using for over a month.  I heard him deliver it down here in Miami not 4 weeks ago.

Something like:

"I want to go before the UN and tell them, 'America is back!'"

LOL.

It got great applause.

Indeed, I believe someone posted a diary on this site a couple weeks ago about attending an Obama event in San Fran (it may have been on DKos though) that had video of the entire speech, you can watch it and see for yourself.

Classic.  The most noteworthy part of Hillary's speech was a rip off.

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

Some documentation:

Obama: America is Back!
guest column

By Matthew Sutton of Central Point, Oregon. Matthew is an attorney and a grassroots supporter of Barack Obama.

Speaking to an energized crowd of over 4,000 people in Portland, Oregon on Friday night, Sept. 7th, Senator Barack Obama foretold of his message to the rest of the world upon his election:

"America is Back!" ...to work with you in addressing the major problems facing the world we live in.

Not the arrogant America of the last several years, but the America characterized by the fundamental decency of its people. Senator Obama reminded us of the hope and optimism that has helped the United States overcome so many greater problems in our Nation's history.

Well done Hillary

Re: Tom Harkin Steak Fry

Or you can just watch it for yourself, here, it's at 1:40..."I'm lookin forward to going before the United Nations General Assembly and saying, 'America is back!'"

He's been using that line for at least a month.
