Debate And Related Open Thread

I hear there might be a Republican debate tonight, or something. Use this thread to discuss said debate, along with other topics.

Also, before the debate it is useful to note that the current Republican President now has only a 29% approval rating, according to a new Pew poll that is loaded with interesting info on 2008.

And just to add (Jonathan)... We'll be doing a MyDD Blog Talk Radio debate wrapup show immediately following tonight's Republican debate.

The debate clock, again, is offered by ChrisDodd.com.

Re: Debate Related Open Thread

I'm hoping for a fist fight.

And from the Pew Poll -
Bush fell more than 10% among Republicans...

And how are there still people in this country who have not heard of Barack Obama?

Re: Debate Related Open Thread

To clarify - how are there 15% of Registered Voters (Democrats and Demo-leaning Indies) that have not heard of Barack Obama? And 15% have not heard of Edwards?

What is wrong with this country?

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

Just want to pimp my diary here (look in the recent diaries and give me some feedback), predicting LandStater will get the fight he wants without the fists (since Rudy will be between McCain and Romney).

Gotta love CNN for putting "Rudy McRomney" together in the center so the other candidates can just point that way.

One thing I forgot to include in my preview: the idiot Wolf may well bring up evolution again since Brownback seemed to think it necessary to pen an entire op ed on it.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread
First of all, Hillary wont destroy the southern democratic party, because it was already destroyed. If you go from winning 0 old south states the last two elections to again winning 0 old south states in the next election, I dont think that accurately can be blamed on whoever the candidate is. I also have a hard time seeing Barack win a southern state other than Florida.
Furthermore, I hear all this "Hillary is the only person who can blow this talk." I'm sorry, do we have any evidence of this actually being the case? I dont like when people throw out vague assertions and expect everyone to treat them as fact.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

These are bogus assertions.  I have been posting here for some time, but reading longer.  Over time the claims have become shriller, the logic more twisted, the further we have moved along in the process.   I guess some can't handle that Obama's ascent to his rightful inevitable place in the sun has stalled and he is stuck on a plateau, while not taking any state's voters by storm.   Hey, at least these folks take their problems out on the "evil witch" and not the "stupid Democratic voters" quite yet.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

I have. That's why I'm calling him a racist. His newsletter frequently printed racist material. When called upon it in 1996, he refused to disown it.

Now he claims it was ghostwritten. Even if it was, it still bore his name. Either he agreed with it or he let things be printed under his byline without reading them, in which case he's far too stupid to be president.

And if you think the best candidate is the one who wants to abolish social security, I can't help thinking you're not going to fit in here.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

You have not done your homework very well at all.

The comments that can be views as rasist are usually quoted out of context and were not written by Ron Paul. They were also written 15 years ago when Dr. Paul was out of politics and busy delivering babies.

Trust me, I did my research on this because I can not support a rasist.

BTW did you know that other republicans have the SAME view as Ron Paul with Social Security.  Social Ssecurity is the WORST investment you will ever make for retirement.  The average return is less than 1/1.  If you die, you heir don't get a dime.  If you invested the same in IRA's, you would retire a rich person.

Ron paul isn't the only one who can win, he's the only one who should win.... why?

because:
Ron Paul is a constitutionalist.

Ron has never voted to raise taxes.
Ron has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
Ron has never voted for the Iraq War.
Ron has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
Ron has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
Ron has never voted to raise congressional pay.
Ron has never taken a government-paid junket.

Ron voted against the Patriot Act.
Ron votes against regulating the Internet.
Ron voted against NAFTA and CAFTA.
Ron votes against the United Nations.
Ron votes against the welfare state.
Ron votes against reinstating a military draft.

Ron votes to preserve the constitution.
Ron votes to cut government spending.
Ron votes to lower healthcare costs.
Ron votes to end the war on drugs.
Ron votes to protect civil liberties.
Ron votes to secure our borders with real immigration reform.

Clearly, the way to get rid of cancer in 10 years is to disregard whatever scientists say when it doesn't fit political goals.  Well okay, we'll ignore the climate scientists, because they're idiots, but the cancer biologists, we'll listen to them.  Unless they want to use stem cells.  Then we'll have to kill them, to support our culture of life.

I would have loved it if someone had pointed out to Brownback that the current thinking in cancer biology is that cancer is a stem cell disease, and to study one you need to study the other.

I liked the interesting flow of responses on the question: biggest moral issue facing the US.

Huckabee: pro-life - this does not end at birth, but includes all life
Guliani: we need to expand our values to other countries
Paul: we need to end our support for pre-emptive war against other countries (i.e. causing the destruction of life beyond birth) and stop considering attacking a country that has done nothing against us.

Certainly some inconsistencies in collective logic there.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

For a brief moment, I feel bad for McCain.  Relative to his main competition (Rudy, Romney) he tries to actually be principled, which was certainly on display tonight when the immigration bill was being discussed and he was attacked by everyone.  Surely he knew this when supporting the bill, yet did it anyway.  Several of the applause lines he got were well-deserved.

But then I also remember how much he shilled for Bush, kissed arse to the religious right, etc., and I no longer feel bad for the guy.

An open question... if you KNEW that the Republican nominee would win the general election, and you could NOT pick Ron Paul, whom would you pick?

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

Huckabee is their Richardson: the second-tier candidate with the best chance of moving up. The problem is he raised $500,000 last quarter. Not sure how much damage you can do with that... maybe he's positioning himself as an attract VP candidate to assuage social conservatives who would be weary of Rudy McRomney atop the ticket.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

I wonder why Huckabee hasn't gained more traction.  Unlike Richardson, who I think becomes less likeable the more you see him, Huckabee seems competent, nice, etc.  With all the discontent creating a need for a Fred Thompson, why didn't someone like a Huckabee rise from the second tier?  I mean, other than appear on Law & Order, how is Fred Thompson more suited to be president than Mike Huckabee?  Apparently I have a hard time thinking like a conservative Republican.  I'll interpret that as a good thing.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

I think Ron Paul is the second-tier candidate with the best chance to move up, since he has staked out an anti-war position in contrast to the other ten candidates, and supported by 20-25% of the Republican voters.  He's also fairly conservative on most of the other issues.

Huckabee is the best public speaker in the field, but conservatives are staying away from him because he raised some taxes in Arkansas, and he is perceived as being soft on illegal immigration.  Other than that, he's not saying anything that Brownback, Tancredo, Gilmore, Hunter, Romney, Thompson, Thompson, etc. aren't already saying, splitting the conservative vote into splinters.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

McCain. McCain well before Paul. He's wrong on Iraq, but he occasionally is rational and he doesn't have the hatred flowing so strong in his veins.

Failing that, Brownback. He's a loon, but there does actually seem to be an undercurrent of compassion to a lot of it.

Re: Debate And Related Open Thread

A) We don't need CNN to decide who the top tier candidates are.

B) Of course if you get the most air time you increase your odds of becoming more popular, given that all of your fellows are essentially equally reprehensible in their own ways.

C) The Time Clock only highlights why the Democrats, if they were smart, should run their own debates, tell the media to cover them if you want, buy infomercial time or whatever, and have some non media whores to moderate the thing to ensure fairness, balance, and education.

D) Having a useless talking beard like Blitzer suck up all of that time for himself, about 20 percent of the total time, only highlights what a monumental waste of time that debate was, even given that it was a bunch of Republicans talking.
