Debate Open Thread

Use this thread to talk about the debate.

Also, Chris Dodd's internet team seems to have put together some pretty cool coverage of the debate, which you can check out here. They also have a cool debate clock that will measure the amount of time each candidate spends talking. I have embedded the clock in the extended entry.

I'm looking forward to this. I hope that Obama Hillary and Edwards has enough time to answer the questions fully. We all know they didn't have that opportunity last time.

Good!

The candidates are challenging each other, thanks to Edwards.

Hold on to your hats, people: the race starts tonight.

Edwards

Finally, someone calling people on it.  Even though Obama did good, Edwards is calling him and Clinton on their lack of leadership.

Obama, "Kiss my butt, Johnny Come lately"

Clinto, "I'm not getting into this, George W. Bush sucks."

Dodd with the right wing frame.

I liked Dodd's answer on the funding question too.  The problem is he started with a right wing frame.  "First responsibility of the President is to protect"  That's B.S.  The first is to defend the constitution.

Re: Debate Open Thread

John Edwards has some nerve. He voted for this thing. He didn't read the NIE and now, he's the "moral" authority. PLease.

Obama told Edwards that he was about FOUR years too late behind him. Warned him not to play politics with this thing.

Re: Debate Open Thread

He was on the intelligence committee.  He got to hear the report.

I can't blame Obama for not criticizing him on that -- after all, he's perfectly aware that not having been in the Senate at the time, he didn't even have a say in the first place.

What, is this the Obama strategy -- he talks about unity and working together, and his devotees do the mudslinging?

I like Obama's message.  I would recommend people not ruin it with biased input.

Re: Debate Open Thread

Crucial.

And yes, it's probably easier for a Senator who didn't have to make the choice to criticize others.  Particularly one from a predominantly blue area, as opposed to one from a red state.  But seeing as he wasn't there, that rings a bit hollow.

Re: Debate Open Thread

I guess holding a speech on the subject before the vote doesn't mean anything.  Just like Edwards had a speech on "not funding the war" before the recently passed war supplemental doesn't mean anything, right?  Or is this a blade that only cuts one way?

If you were actually a grown adult you would realize in the real world life isn't always going to work out what an individual can do. It sometimes comes down to the power of the various forces in the system, and what we can collectively do. But great spin.

Re: Debate Open Thread

You are idiot. seriously, I'm spinning. I am worried about what my healthcare cost is. Is any of this real to you? I don't sense it is. I have no idea what the eventual solution to the healthcare debate should be. But, I do have problem with cute statements like left to the individual when in fact we know there is less choice rather than more. It's simply mouthing words to even suggest such a thing when we are a) looking at hyper inflationary increases (10 percent or more per year) in cost for those of us who can afford insurance b) that the coverage is strinking because of all the things they don't cover c) that there are some 40 million people who aren't cover d) that there are any number of people who are under cover e) that the costs are spiralling out of control. And all you can come up with is your concern over how you think Obama scored some cute one liner? You must be kidding me. I am  hoping this is just your zeal of th emoment rather than who you really are. If not, you do a disservice to your candidate.

Re: Debate Open Thread

Obama's Health Care plan takes similar approaches as Edwards to lowering costs.  The things you are confronting are things that Obama's plan covers in similar ways to Edwards.  Obama's plan ALSO hits malpractice reform, but that must be hard for Edwards getting rich from being a trial lawyer, right?  Obama's plan also has "catastrophic coverage" something Edwards' plan doesn't hit.

Another thing worth noting is 47 Million not covered, roughly 40 million undercovered.

Re: Debate Open Thread

My point was that Obama's response to Edwards was not a good one, but instead was to score beneath him political points. I actually think Obama has some good ideas too. My response was to the fact that rather than engaging in a discussion of the various merits of both candidates good ideas and bad ideas, the poster comes on to bring up the low class approach that Obama used on this issue. This also not the first time that the poster has come on here with this rah-rah my team crap. Edwards supporters are also guilty of it. It's getting old. Hence my response. I am reasonable with reasonable people and rude to those who are not.

I'm still waiting for a candidate besides Gravel to get angry. These questions are designed to trip the candidates up, they're full of retarded frames, they're ignoring the important issues.

First one to really lay into Blitzer wins massive respect from me. To me, they're trying too much to show they have good policies. That's hard to do in a minute, and it makes more sense to prove they can fight the Right.

Re: Debate Open Thread

Half the problem is that Dodd's not doing enough with his time. He's coming over as sensible but unexciting, the kind of guy who'd have been a shoo-in for the nomination back before McGovern created the primary system but struggles for traction now. He needs to shoot his mouth off more, because right now he's getting the least attention of the third-tier guys, because he's neither playing into right-wing frames nor a crazy old man.

by Englishlefty 2007-06-03 04:01PM | 0 recs

Thank You Mike Gravel

Thanks for asking Barack if he knew about the shortcomings of the VA. My wife is a Vet and I know there are problems. It blew me away when Barack stated that he became aware of the deficiencies when he was on the oversight committee.

How can you get into the Senate and not know someone  that has had serious problems with the VA system?

Re: They're doing well, but not pithy enough

Republicans as the party of barbarism? There's a narrative two and a half thousand years old saying that barbarism is a bad thing. I don't think they can fight that framing, particularly not if they keep hating on academics.

by Englishlefty 2007-06-03 05:00PM | 0 recs
Re: They're doing well, but not pithy enough

Hating on academics and the related anti-intellectualism message got Bush reelected against an intellectual.  I'm not sure the negative frame you name really exists in quite the way that you put it forward.  It sure as hell should -- but I think that's more a point of the Democratic paradigm than a generalized meme.

Final Thoughts

My closing thoughts now that the debate is over.  Overall I think the top 3 showed why they are the top 3.  Both in framing and in leading.  I think Hillary did better in the second half than the first.  And the opposite was true for Obama.  Edwards, I liked his more combativeness.

I REALLY liked the format.  It was a real debate.  They could talk and challenge each other and Wolf was given broad authority for giving time.  I think Wolf did well as a MODERATOR, but could've used some better questions.
