Edwards call with media for TV ad

I was emailed the access, and called into the Edwards press conference about the release of the ad, with Beth Leonard, New Hampshire State Director; Jonathan Prince, Deputy Campaign Manager Joe Trippi, Senior Advisor. The ad has a great tag: "It's time to ask Americans to be patriotic about something other than war."

--------------

Prince: The original plan was to go up after July 4th, but now it will begin early, because of having money in the budget.

Q:  "Ahead of your budget plan." The Edwards goal is $40M before they get to Iowa.

Q: "July 4th was planned, but why moving the ad buy up?" Extra money. "The Times story". Not a distraction, but focuses on what they did to raise the issue of poverty and help workers organize. As for the Times, they didn't bother interviewing anyone that actually was helped by the organizations.

Joe Trippi-- when we get attacked, it's typical for supporters to chip in, paying attention and putting their energy into the campaign. Part of what's going on is that we've seen an uptick since that story.

Another question on the non-profit organizations. It seems pretty clear that the reporters are all focusing on the non-profit organizations which Edwards worked for in '05-06, one reporter asked "why did you publicize it"; which is such a stupid question.

Q: "Is this a reaction to Clinton locking it up in NH?" -- These are long campaigns, we are engaging them early, even though the decision process happens later, it's the aggregate from the case made over the entire campaign.

Q: "How long is it running?" It's a strong buy ad, you'll see it a lot up in NH.

A question about the ads message, "patriotic about something other than war", asking why doesn't it mention poverty, and does this mean that Edwards is backing off on the issue?  Another bizarre question, as if candidates can only focus on one issue.

Blogger conference calls are much better.

sound like nitwits

try making a 30 second add of which 3 seconds is for the "I"m john Edwards and I approve this message".

which leaves about 26 seconds to get some points across.

how many things can the reporter message in one sentence?

did I get that right

a reporter asked why publicize the poverty center?

holly molly..  how else does the topic get attention?

"Another bizarre question"

It's bizarre because the ad does mention poverty.

Re: "Another bizarre question"

He says, "It's not that we don't know what needs to be done, to lift families out of poverty."

Great reporting by that reporter.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

I like how they handled the questions about the NY Times article. Something along the lines of "Without this so-called controversy, there never would have been a New York Times front page article about poverty." They're clearly trying to turn the attacks that are levied against him into positives. Like on Leno last night, it was Edwards himself who brought up the haircut issue, making a self-deprecating joke about it.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

He can't compete against Obama and Clinton unless he stays unconventional. Being attacked by the media is beneficial, it gives him outsider credibility, which is essential when facing two candidacies which are revolutionary because of who the candidates are. It's the logical next step from asking for funding whenever he's attacked.

by the way, I think the ad kicks Obama's ads' ass.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

Of course you do.

I didn't know that one ad could kick another ad's ass. Where exactly in the ad did it take down Obama's ad?

Sorry, but your comment just seemed like a gratuitous and meaningless shot.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

I do think that it is stronger than Obama's 30 second ad though I think that Obama's 60 second ad is a lot more powerful.  It is also interesting given the different audiences.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

Yeah, I thought Obama's bio ad was good, his bipartisan ad not so much, especially for Iowa. The biparstisan one would attract independents in New Hampshire, and that's probably where he'll put it up next.

by david mizner 2007-06-26 10:30AM | 0 recs
Thats what I was thinking as well

better for NH, not sure how well it will play in Iowa with a pretty diehard caucus population. In NH it should play well to independents.

more spins

Looks to me typical Joe Trippi spin. Bad publicity = good for fundraising, Dean style.

Will Joe Trippi continue his 0 to 8, 9, 10(?) losing streak? He's closing in onto Shrum.

actually I wasn't planning to donate this cycle until I saw the article. I am certain because I am not alone.

That's a fair hit.  But all I can say is that I'm still at it -- trying to make a difference.  That's all any of us can do.

I was actually a big fan of you in those crazy Dean days.

Still think it's a bad idea for you to have a covenient marriage with Edwards. I can see you are a true believer, but Edwards, cough, cough...

tag line extremely long winded

Not sure it's a good tag line. I have to read three times to comprehend the tag line.

The line sounds a lot better said by him than it reads off of the screen. I makes limited sense to complain about an ad you haven't watched.

one of his biggest applause lines

I have seen Edwards speak in Iowa several times during the past year, and I have talked to many people who saw him speak at other venues in Iowa.

That line about it being time to ask Americans to be patriotic about something besides war consistently evokes one of the biggest responses from any crowd he is speaking to. People want to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

Using attacks as a motivation for donations may work in the short run to raise money but it doesn't build your donation base.

I'm not sure if this approach on the $400 haircut is a good idea.   John and Elizabeth now have a routine they are doing about it which rings phony to those who may be inclined to think that way going in.  It's not a strategy to turn people around on it.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

My roommate, who is a Clinton supporter, watched Leno with me last night and laughed at his joke.  She said she was glad he's able to make light of it and not take the issue too serious.

She will be swayed, I know it.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

Good to hear. I groaned when I heard him say that. "Enough already!" Part of damage control is minimizing the issue, but part of it is simply changing the subject and moving on. Edwards has no shortage of subjects to talk about and I though last night he stepped on what was otherwise a good appearance. But natch the idiot reporters all picked up on the "haircut" joke because its part of their narrative.

By making fun of it, he seems to

trivilaize it (rightly so imo) and seems to be having some success in neutralizing it if audience reaction is an indication.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

It doesn't make new donors, but I'd guess it's aimed  more at getting previous donors to give again.

Re: Edwards call with media for TV ad

1. Dr Frank, made me laught out loud.

2. Blogger conference calls are much better.

It seems to me the amount of information available to reporters covering campaigns is greater than ever -- from the campaigns but also about them -- and yet reporters seem less and less informed. Part of that I understand that they are stretched thinner and thinner by cuts in newsroom budgets -- they might be following the entire race rather than one candidate (a dynamic that will badly hurt Edwards if it continues). Still, the questions you posted correspond to my experience watching local media up close trying to cover presidential campaigns. Even the smart reporters can't write a decent story or even ask a decent question; they simply don't know where to start.

So when a candidate appears, instead of asking "tell me about point 4 in your health care plan" they ask "what about the latest story I read this morning on Drudge".

My point is that I think, amazingly, a lot of professional reporters don't read blogs -- good, informative ones, like this one -- except when their work is mentioned. I feel like from simply reading a few sites sporadically, I seem to know more about both substance and process of this cycle than a lot of these reporters.

Am I being unfair? If not, it seems to me the campaigns (or at least the ones I want to win, like Edwards) need to spend more time laying things out for individual reporters, in effect micro-targeting their message to reporters they way they might to constituencies. I'm sure they do this within the press corps that covers the campaign but in terms of the local media, well, no one is going to get unelected overestimating their intelligence.

Edwards to reporters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlkPMdoTV Lw
John Edwards: "They're not going to kill this voice."

"Sometimes I get reporters, they ask me, they say, `I don't understand why you're out talking about the poor. How can someone with your resources talk about the poor?'

"I don't claim to be poor. Does that mean I can't speak out for people who don't have a voice? Does that mean I can't stand up for the disabled, the disenfranchised, the poor?

"Listen, I'm here to tell you whenever you do that you're going to get attacked. Every time you do that you're going to get attacked. It's always true in American history because people who have wealth and power, they do not want to hear this. They want this message to be squelched and so they try to kill the messenger. In this case, that's me.

Let me say this very directly. They are not going to kill this voice. As long as I'm alive and breathing, I am going to stand up for people who need somebody to speak for them."

Going on tv this early ...

Seems pretty worthless I think.  But I think Edwards feels like he has to do something because the press on him hasn't been great lately and he is largely getting lost in the shuffle back in third.

Re: Going on tv this early ...

Tell that to Richardson. Considering the series of trainwrecks that's been his campaign for the last few months, I think it has to be going on the air that's boosted his numbers in Iowa and New Hampshire.

What about global poverty?

I would like to see John Edwards mention and support more international affairs.  Problems like global poverty are affecting each and every one of us on a daily basis.  The U.S should not forget the commitment made towards the U.N. Millennium Goals (a pact of ending extreme world hunger by the year 2025) in 2000. According to The Borgen Project, an annual $19 billion dollars is needed to end world hunger by the year 2025. To my sense, it is almost unacceptable to have spent so far more than $340 billion in Iraq only, when we have more than war immunities to change the world and eliminate poverty.
