Fox News Poll Testing Anti-Democratic Party Message

Keith Olbermann brought up the issue during his broadcast last night, Brian Stelter over at TV Newser brought it up a little earlier in the day and I've wondered about it since I first looked at the latest Opinion Dynamics poll (.pdf) a couple of days back: It appears that Fox News is, as Chris alluded to Thursday night, instructing its polling outfit to poll test an anti-Democratic Party message. Stelter has the details.

An e-mailer notices that "Fox News asked some very curious questions in a poll released yesterday."

It asked, "do you think a television network that is hosting a presidential debate can influence the outcome of that debate?" 65 percent said yes.

Then the poll questions got even more interesting. The e-mailer thinks "Fox is testing its own anti-Democratic Party and anti-MoveOn.org messaging," adding: "Political operations do message testing like this, but I've never seen a news organization use (or need) the tactic."

You decide; here's the poll:

34.  Do you think a television network that is hosting a presidential debate can influence the outcome of that debate?

35.  If a political party agrees to participate in debates hosted by one television network but refuses to do debates hosted by another network, do you think it is fair to say the party is picking the network it believes is more aligned with its views and so would ask easier questions during the debate?

36.  After the 2004 presidential election, the president of the left-wing Moveon.org political action committee made the following comment about the Democratic Party, "In the last year, grassroots contributors like us gave more than $300 million to the Kerry campaign and the DNC, and proved that the Party doesn't need corporate cash to be competitive.  Now it's our Party:  we bought it, we own it and we're going to take it back." Do you think the Democratic Party should allow a grassroots organization like Moveon.org to take it over or should it resist this type of takeover?

The emailer is correct in noting the unprecedented nature of a purported news organization poll testing a political attack of this nature. But this is far from the only aspect of the polling commissioned this month by Fox News that further belies the already patently false notion that it is a news organization rather than a propaganda arm of the conservative movement and the Republican Party. Take a quick look at the ordering and wording of these two questions towards the end of the survey.

39.  Who do you trust more to decide when U.S. troops should leave Iraq -- U.S. military commanders or Members of Congress?  (ROTATE)

40.  Last week the U.S. House voted to remove U.S. troops from Iraq by no later than September 2008 -- would you describe this as a correct and good decision or a dangerous and bad decision?

The order of these two questions evidence a significant priming bias, also known in statistics as the "order effect". Although it would not be possible to find out the magnitude of this bias without running a second poll that reorders the questions (and perhaps even asks every question just as Opinion Dynamics did, but in a different order), suffice it to say that on the surface there is real reason to believe that the fact that these two questions were asked back-to-back was not accidental but was rather to artificially lower the number of respondents answering that there should be a withdrawal of troops by September 2008 -- a number that was already affected by the unbalanced language of the second question (correct and dangerous are not opposites as good and bad are).

As a result of this fairly clear partisan hackery on the part of Fox News, I think its right time I joined Chris is shying away from even the discussion of polling commissioned by the network, let alone its obviously biased attempts at reporting.

Fox News is wholly owned by the GOP

This is just another reason why there should ne no debate on Fox.

John Edwards led the way on the Nevada debate, while the others stayed behind and let him take the risk.

After the Nevada debate was cancelled, the Obama campaign spread the word to MyDD and Daily Kos that Obama was planning to boycott, but it got cancelled.

Hilary appears to be favored by Rupert Murdock.  I do not look for leadership from her.

Well now it's time to show us.  Step up and be counted.

NO DEBATE ON FOX.

Re: Fox News is wholly owned by the GOP

I am so tried of hearing this shit, "Murdoch supports Clinton."  Are you for real?  Do yo really think Murduch is supporting Clinton for president? Murdoch is a dumb ass Republican that for some reason has been successfull in putting Faux News at the top of cable broadcasts. Pure luck, I'd say.

Murdoch and the rest of those dumb ass Repubs hate the Clintons; despise them. They would rather die first, than to have another Clinton in office. Murdoch is a Republican first-a business man second. There is NO WAY in HELL Murdoch is supporting Hillary.

Re: Fox News is wholly owned by the GOP

He contributed to her Senate camapign and has said nice things about her.

The Republicans are in disaray.  She'll do as a bulwark agaisnt liberals, the left, and working people.

The NewsCorp media wil bash Edwards and Obama, but be less harsh with her this cycle.  Watch and see it.

Re: Fox News is wholly owned by the GOP

So what! He contributed to Schumer too. So is Schumer in Murdoch's pocket too?  Enough of shit!!

It's never been any secret Hillary is not a "Liberal Democrat".  She's a moderate, always has been.  Her husband is not a liberal either; he's a moderate. The media has portrayed them as "Liberal Democrats"; they aren't and never have been. They have not tried to hide this aspect of their political view.  Bill supported NAFTA, for God's sake; which was the biggest mistake ever. I'm sure he regrets it now.

Bill and Hillary are good people. They are NOT perfect. However, none of the Democratic nominees are perfect. Obama has virtually an identical voting record to Hillary except the "War Vote". So what does that say about Obama?  You should welcome Democrats with different votes. That's what makes OUR party PROGRESSIVE.

Obama and Clinton vote

the same on Iraq.

According to Greg Sargent and Eric Kleefeld at TPM Cafe Election Central, in Compare And Contrast: Hillary And Obama's Votes On Iraq, they voted together in all but one of 69 Iraq-war-related votes considered. Obama voted to confirm General Casey as Chief of Staff of the Army, and Hillary voted against.

This includes voting against the Kerry-Feingold in 2006.  The bill would have had our troops coming home by this summer.

Obama never voted on the AUMF in 2002.  He made a speech against the invasion.

Re: Fox News is wholly owned by the GOP

Are you saying the contributions mean nothin?  That is not credible at all.  To me this means Shumer and Clinton will probably go easy on Murdock's efforts to gain control of the media.  Afterall Bill helped his efforts with 96 telecommunications bill.  If you hate fox why would you want to assist a candidate that will make the media more right wing than it is.  The 96 telecommuncations bill was stupid to say the least.

Murdoch is Australian

he might be ultra right wing, but he is not a US citizen, and not a Republican.

Re: Murdoch is Australian

He's been a naturalised US citizen since the mid 1980s.

Re: Fox News Poll Testing

It's also testing the reach of DailyKos and Powerline.  Funny, that, though we know that Republicans tested awareness of Markos personally last cycle.

Re: Fox News Poll Testing

Interestingly, the poll finds that a higher proportion of Republicans than Democrats read DailyKos -- statistical noise, no doubt, but still interesting.

Re: Fox News Poll Testing Anti-Dem Message

I think if MYDD puts some polls in the field this year and next, some media consolidation questions should be included.  Things like, "In view of the GWOT would you agree or not agree that it is dangerous to allow foreigners to control major television networks?".  I would just love to see the answer to this from the Faux News audience.

Re: Fox News Poll Testing Anti-Dem Message

My understanding was that foreigners weren't allowed to and that that was why Murdoch got US citizenship in the first place. Besides, I don't quite see the rationale for why progressives should conduct push-polling to encourage xenophobia.

comment

Rachel Maddow appeared on Countdown last night to discuss this poll with Keith. Crooks and Liars has now posted the video, well worth the time it takes to watch.

I really can't understand what possessed the CBC to sign up with these cretins; I suppose it's too late to get the Dem candidates on board to refuse this one as they did the last?

Maybe...

...the bazillion people watching that cream the nearest competitor?  A TV remote seems to be one of the greatest "vote" makers in the country.  So far, the attempts to take their audience away with a better format/content have been weak and laughably pathetic.

a question

Why haven't there been hundreds of FEC complaints filed against Fox News?

by s5 2007-03-31 11:19PM | 0 recs
When

Fox News was made into a political issue by the left-wing blogosphere and subsequently by Democratic candidates for President. This poll is clearly not an attempt to be an outside observer, since the situation its in makes that impossible. Therefore, treating Fox News like an outside observer, like other polling agencies would be, and like previous Fox News polls have been, would be inconsistent. All things being equal, it would be improper for those kind of questions. But things are not equal. Fox News was dragged into a political debate; you can't fault them for acting as if that's true.
