Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

Since Comedy Central is owned by Viacom, and Viacom is psychotically evil about copyright and their embeds don't work on MyDD, I can only link to this clip of Chris Dodd on the Daily Show.  Don't bother watching, it's not that interesting.  The opening question is Jon Stewart asking Dodd about the Fox News debate in Nevada, and Dodd saying that he thinks that Democrats ought to debate.

Jon Stewart: There's a recent hullabaloo about Democratic Presidential candidates withdrawing from a Democratic Presidential debate in Nevada because Fox was sponsoring it.  Let me ask you.  If you were a candidate for President laughter, what would you do in that situation?

Chris Dodd:  I would go out and debate.  I think you got to debate.

This is a bad answer, because it treats Fox News as a credible news source.  Much of the party apparatus still does not get that Fox News is not on our side.  It's rather remarkable.

People like Bill Maher, who is mostly a chauvinistic asshole that has an HBO show, called Democrats 'pussies' for not going on Fox News.  Media buffoons like Maher and PR unsavvy Senators like Dodd  ensure that we lose our momentum in damaging Fox News and their brand.  There's a moment for the next two weeks to really go out and savage this company, but the party leadership is too busy running from dirty fucking hippies to recognize that Fox News isn't just conservative but their opposition.  And I guarantee that Dodd isn't getting traction among primary voters with his clueless nice guy schtick.  Democratic activists and primary voters hate Fox News.

Update (Jonathan): Don't mean to butt in, but just wanted to note that Dennis Kucinich is saying about the same thing, and in stronger language, as Dodd...

Update, again: After the show, one staffer wrote to Tim Tagaris that "Dodd told me today he was a bit nervous and misunderstood the first question--knew about the fox issue, but took the question to be about debates in general." Dodd would have had a good response on Fox News, but he just didn't understand the question. It happens. I like Dodd, he's pushing important legislation, he's a really nice guy and he was there for us in Connecticut. This was a missed opportunity, though it does reflect a certain instinct towards geniality rather than the bitter-ish progressive populism that is now winning elections.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

I feel for Dodd, who kinda seems to be playing the Bob Graham role this cycle.  (Good Dem, lots of experience, can't get any traction.)  When you're a nobody, you simply have no choice but to take any debate opportunity you can get.  At least he didn't call all the other Dems cowards for ditching Fox the way Kucinich did.

Obviously there are a lot of ways that a long-shot candidate can show some loyalty to the netroots agenda, and it's disappointing when they miss an opportunity.  I think the topic of debates is a special exception that I have to grant, given the difficulty these candidates face in getting any air time whatsoever.

I do think Dodd wasn't quite sure what he wanted to establish with the Daily Show audience and so it wasn't a particularly productive appearance for him overall.

I used to live in CT.  Dodd isn't clueless about PR.  He's been in the Senate for what seems like forever, and yet no one knows who he is.  He is just desperate to get his name out there.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

Isn't this a post on why Dodd has no traction. You write:

Dodd isn't clueless about PR.

OK, I'm listening. Then you write.

He's been in the Senate for what seems like forever, and yet no one knows who he is.

How could he not be clueless about PR? Sure he might have had skills at writing "sternly worded" statements to mail to reporters, but he obviously has zero clue about political communication in this millennium. He has some money in the bank, a good resume, and yet he is blowing his shot at the one job he's always wanted. It is sad to watch.

Kucinich is an idiot.

I'm disappointed that Dodd doesn't get it. He could have learned a lot last year, he had a front row seat. But either he is too stuck in his ways or can't read the writing on the wall -- regardless I'm glad he won't be the nominee.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

None of the Democratic candidates are idiots.

Dennis Kucinich (along with Robert Byrd, Ron Paul, and some others) took some of the strongest stands against the war in Iraq long before anyone else even spoke out and he has done so on many hundreds of issues over the years.

He may not be a viable candidate for the nomination but it is important to hear all voices in the party.

OK. How about this? Dennis Kucinich makes himself look like an idiot when he showboats. He is actually not an idiot but a bit of a narcissist. To bad because he is actually right about a number of things.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

I think that's a pretty good read on Dennis the Menace.

And AFAICT, all he's doing is showboating by running in this cycle.  What message is he getting out by running, that a lot of people aren't already saying?  And then he does shit like this that undercuts his own side.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

The real reason Dodd and Kucinich take this position is because they're mired in the single digits, poll-wise. They need the exposure a debate -- any debate -- would bring.

Men of principle,  don't 'cha know.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

Maher loves to talk a big game and tries to tell Democrats to grow balls, then when they do (by pulling out of FoxNews debate), he motherfucks them some more.

This is a man who is so afraid of being known as a Democrat, that he constantly lets people know he's a libertarian.  And what's a libertarian, anyway?  A libertarian is a Republican asshole who likes to smoke pot and not pay any taxes.

"Bitter-ish?"

Matt, where does this come from?  If you mean the opposite of liberal wishy-washy "geniality" (love me love me I'm a liberal), well I can think of a number of other modifiers like clear, forceful, principled, no-bullshit, over-it,sink-or-swim, take-no-prisoners and those eternal media favorite, tough/macho/frontier-manly.  Words are important, and frankly bitterly to me is a waspish old queen railing against, well, everything as in every gay film character in through the '50s.

As for Maher (Ann Coulter's good buddy), jgarcia pretty much nails it.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

The problem with Kucinich and Dodd taking positions like this is that it undermines the idea that Fox is a partisan network.  It may be good for Kucinich and Dodd, but it's bad for the movement.

I saw the Dodd Daily Show appearance and wasn't impressed.  Aside from the Fox comment, he just wasn't interesting, engaging, or funny.  Very bland.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

Hello? Is there anyone out there? CNN and MSNBC are also Republican propaganda machines. Not just Fox. All the major news channels are Republican controlled. Its time to move on.

Re: Why Chris Dodd Has No Traction

Oh, he understood the question.  Dodd and Kucinich are just desperate for some face time.  They know they won't be targeted, because they're not taken seriously as candidates.

I posted a blog on this subject here recently, analyzing one of the last debates Fox hosted.  Looking at the leading candidates, they gave Lieberman a free pass, just minor slaps to Kerry and Edwards, while totally trashing Dean and Clark with questions along the lines of "When did you stop beating your wife?"

Do you ever wonder if the reason Kerry and Edwards rose to the top was because the neocon media manipulated that occurrence?

I do.
