Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated

Once again, here's the list of the Blue Dogs (plus Sestak) who are against the supplemental because of the conditions it imposes. I removed Kirsten Gillibrand, because she signaled she'd vote for the bill after internal deliberations and public pressure from her supporters.

Here's the list, with three new members (Lincoln Davis (TN-04), Joe Donnelly (IN-02), and Bob Ethridge (NC-02)). Lots of Indiana reps on the list, which is nice because it's Evan Bayh whose wavering in the Senate (along with the Nelsons, of course).

Michael Arcuri (NY-24)
John Barrow (GA-12)
Melissa Bean (IL-08)
Dan Boren (OK-02)
Jim Cooper (TN-05)
Bud Cramer (AL-02)
Lincoln Davis (TN-04)
Joe Donnelly (IN-02)
Brad Ellsworth (IN-08)
Bob Ethridge (NC-02)
Kirsten Gillibrand (NY-20) ???
Baron Hill (IN-09)
Tim Mahoney (FL-16)
Jim Marshall (GA-08)
Mike McIntyre (NC-07)
Collin Peterson (MN-07)
John Salazar (CO-03)
Joe Sestak (PA-07)
Heath Shuler (NC-11)
Gene Taylor (MS-04)

Today's big win in the Appropriations Committee is good for momentum. Win or lose, Pelosi is an amazing Speaker.

what about being against linking

a timetable with funding... is that the same?

Re: what about being against linking
No, the issue is a timetable. Whether it's funding or making the war illegal isn't really important.

timetable?

matt - i don't get this.  bush hasn't shown a prediliction for following the law. how will a timetable (especially one with loopholes) help, if bush has been given all the money he needs to continue the war?

Re: timetable! (How is 12/31/07 ??)

Joe Sestak does not oppose a timetable.
Please see his sponsored legislation regarding redeployment of troops this year.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c1 10:H.R.960:

I resent this continued listing of patriot and veteran Joe Sestak as a saboteur! Please stop attacking him based on the info of an anonymous source.

Re: timetable! (How is 12/31/07 ??)

This is spot on!!

Sestak is ahead of the curve..he's where the public is on Iraq -- redeploy by the end of this year (2007) and to cut off funding by the end of the year as well.

Re: timetable! (How is 12/31/07 ??)

Why the hell should we have to pay for our own frickin destruction??? Just cut the frickin funds!!! All of them. Now. There is no other way. My Senator Ted Kennedy could filibuster their entire funding scam. I will ask him to do this. If they fund it, they own it. NEVER FORGET!!!

IF YOU FUND THIS FUCKING THING YOU OWN THIS FUCKING THING. THERE IS NO MIDDLE GROUND LEFT ANYMORE!

Not time yet

I believe it is precipitous to be talking timetables. POTUS has the troops there and there is little we can do that he cannot ignore or outflank. We should get on the record, provide oversight until later.

Re: Not time yet

but this bill provides funding for the continuation of the war for 18 MONTHS!!!

if it was for 3 months, i'd agree with you. we could keep having the coversation... this bill ends the conversation.

Re: Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated

Gillibrand states that "it was "never in question" that she would do otherwise" so what is the source that says otherwise? It seems strange that you just pull Gillibrand out of the hat.

Re: Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated
I was told that she was wavering because she didn't want to set a deadline. This was confirmed by a supporter of hers who couldn't get an answer from her for a few days, which he said indicated that she didn't want to give him an answer he didn't like. Finally she put out this public statement.

Someone's got to figure out what's going on with Sestak.

by PsiFighter37 2007-03-14 02:20PM | 0 recs
I'm worried.

I called and no one could give me an answer immediately.  If I had to guess, I'd say Sestak is with the 9 Democrats who think the resolution doesn't go far enough.  I like him, but he's a very stubborn man.

Whoa...

At this point we really don't  know what is in or out of the legislation.   There were, reportedly, demands to remove all timelines to remove troops from Iraq.  Have they been?  According to the Institute For Policy Studies linked about, as many as 60,000 could remain in some capacity.     Until we know that, we don't know what a claim of support for the supplemental means.

Re: Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated

Recieved from Bead

Dear Mr.

Thank you for contacting me about Iraq. I am honored to represent you, and I appreciate your active participation in our legislative process.  Your involvement makes democracy work better by helping me more effectively represent you and Illinois' Eighth District.

I share the concern of many Americans regarding the direction our involvement in this war is headed. I believe America went to war without a plan for securing the peace, and as a direct result, our military personnel is still combating a dangerous-and expensive-insurgency more than three and half years after the fall of Baghdad.

When I visited Iraq in 2005, I was hopeful that democratic elections would allow Iraq to become a more unified sovereign nation. Unfortunately, the situation on the ground has worsened, sectarian violence has increased, and as casualties continue to mount serious scrutiny of our strategy in Iraq is needed.

As you know, the president is currently increasing the number of U.S. military personnel in Iraq by 21,500. In January 2007, I met with top White House officials to discuss the plan. Regrettably, after learning the details of the plan I could not support the troop surge. In the past, we have tried multiple troop surges and after the most recent surge last summer conducted in Baghdad, the U.S. Military declared it a failure as insurgent attacks increased by 22 percent.

In February 2007, I registered my opposition by supporting H.Con.Res. 63-a non-binding resolution expressing disapproval for the troop surge-which passed by a margin of 246 to 182. The U.S. needs to encourage the Iraqi government to resolve the current internal strife politically. Instead of sending more troops, our military mission in Iraq must shift from attempting to secure Iraq to better equipping and training the Iraqi Security Forces so they can secure their own county.

To increase the accountability of the Iraqi Government, we must condition our continued involvement on the Iraqis achieving set benchmarks. To that end, I joined many of my colleagues in cosponsoring H.Res. 100, The Iraqi War Cost Accountability Resolution. This resolution would require increased accountability over future war spending and condition future American financial and military support upon measurable improvement in Iraqi progress towards principal responsibility for internal security.

Thank you again for contacting me about this important issue. I am proud to serve Illinois' Eighth District, and I am committed to working hard for you. Please do not hesitate to write, call, or email if I can ever help you in any way.

Sincerely,

Melissa L. Bean

Blue Dogs

This is a little OT, but what is the purpose of all these internal party organizations, such as the Blue Dogs and the DLC? What benefit does an elected official get from joining such an organization?

And what is the name of the liberal/progressive organization? It seems like while we know who the liberals are, they don't have their own little club within the party like the conservatives do.

Ellsworth...

...is probably nervous because there's an Air Force base just outside of Terre Haute in his district.  They train lots of fighter pilots there.

If you know of anyone that's in the Air Force that could send him a letter or fax, not an email, especially someone that trained or who now serves at the Terre Haute facility, that might get Brad's attention and provide him with cover for what might think is an unpalatable vote in his district.

My two bits...

Re: Ellsworth...

Ellsworth didn't campaign as an anti-war Democrat.  Donnelly got as many votes for being moderately anti-war as he did for being against privatizing the Indiana toll road.  Hill... he's been beaten before for being "weak" on defense, I don't know what he's hoping to accomplish.  Bayh is the big mystery.  He's moved to the left over the past two years but that was when he was running for president.  Do his DLC instincts take hold again?

Re: Ellsworth...

Understood, but if he has the cover of being able to say that former Air Force personnel back the bill, once or presently local, it would at least give him cover if he wants it.

Related to that....

is Grissom Air Force Base in the 2nd CD - IN?  I know it's near Peru, but I dunno if it's in the 2nd.

If it is, rinse and repeat the above message for Joe Donnelly.

Netroots should take names! ! !

I sent a cummulative amount of $45 to 06 'anti-war' candidates now turn-coats:

Arcuri, Shuler, and Sestak.

Their silence on the matter is revealing. More than the vote itself.  I will remember in '08 and beyond...

Re: Netroots should take names! ! !

I gave around $500 to Hill, Ellsworth and Donnelly.

They need to have more guts than this.  Hoosiers will respect tough decisions made by their reps if they can show it isn't in the name of self-interest.

I need to go write some faxes...

Um, where's Allen Boyd?

We know Allen Boyd is the guy behind this whole thing, right?  So why isn't his name on the list?

I mean, you can't just leave off the name of the guy who's leading the whole damn charge, can you?

Re: Um, where's Allen Boyd?

His demand had to do with Iran, not deadlines.

Re: Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated

To Palamedes:
I also contributed to the campaign of Donnelly ($100).  I thought it was odd that I never got a note of thank you. Did you get one?
Donnelly's position on Iraq seemed to me to be a disgrace. Basically he avoided the topic. So this behavior now is not unexpected.

Re: Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated

I actually received a thank you note in the mail, I think.  But I also received a zillion emails asking for more and more money, too.

I think we need to make it clear that the ATMs have tougher password requirements.  "I'm a Democrat" just ain't cutting it anymore as a password, you know?  ;-)

Joe fucking Sestak?!??!!!

I sent him money!  How can he do this??

Re: Blue Dog Supplemental Saboteur List, Updated

Please stop being delusional. We went from a Republican government to a divided government, not to an absolutist Democratic government. Here in the real world, we know that Congress and the Administration will have to negotiate and compromise. It isn't pretty, and no one wants to do it, but there is no other option. Making law is not as simple as writing a blog screed.
