DSCC Goes After Sens. Gordon Smith and John Sununu on Iraq

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is set to run newspaper advertisements across Oregon and New Hampshire blasting Gordon Smith and John Sununu, the two states' respective junior Republican Senators who are up for reelection next fall, for their failed leadership -- specifically the fact that they both voted against beginning a debate on America's Iraq policy last week. (For more on the Republicans' obstruction and obfuscation, check out this post.)

(Warning: links to a .pdf)

This is a start, but it should not be the end. Many of the Republicans up for reelection in 2008 -- including some from states that are considered fairly red -- are going to find it awfully difficult to explain to their constituents over the next year why they continue to strenuously resist efforts to change the failed Bush policy towards Iraq and start to bring American troops home. Simply put, the Republican gambit to shut down debate over the Iraq War will not, in the long run, help that party's cause, nor will the fact that we will almost undoubtedly have large numbers of troops still on the ground in Iraq come November 2008.

So if you're interested in making a contribution to help put this ad in papers in the key Senate hotspots of Oregon and New Hampshire, the DSCC has set up a link to take your donation.

This is good stuff

This is the first time that Gordon Smith will have faced re-election with some serious black marks on his record. He has been able to play the moderate angle, but it won't work this time. If Oregon Dems can get a great progressive candidate lined up, Smith will be toast. Here's to the next Lincoln Chafee.

Props to the DSCC

I think their $250K ad buy in Montana (which goes a long way) in early 2005 paid huge dividends branding the Burns/Abramoff scandal.

It is cool that they are investing early to own the narrative.

The Right Candidates to Remove Smith and Sununu

In Oregon, more and more signs suggest Rep. Earl Blumenauer will look for a promotion by challenging Smith, including Blumenauer's plan to be out of Iraq in one year and his criticisms of the GOP.

Meanwhile, it looks like New Hampshire Democrats are going to have a spirited, but very civil, Senate primary (unless former Governor Jeanne Shaheen decides she wants to get in, clearing the way) between Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand, activist and former Congressional challenger Katrina Swett, and possibly progressive businessman Gary Hirshberg (with state senator David Gottesman another possibility).  The three have all taken aim at Sununu, and Marchand has been crafting some solid rhetoric for his potential campaign.

Re: DSCC Goes After Sens. Gordon Smith and John Su

The DSCC just sent me a solicitation under the auspices of James Carville. I sent back a polite reply that I wouldn't contribute a penny to them as long as they're associated with that s.o.b. and all my money is going to the DNC and Howard Dean. I then unsubscribed to their email list.

James Carville, indeed.
