Clinton & Clark

This morning, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on a rumor:

Obamarama in Hillaryville? Sneed hears rumbles retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a major supporter of Dem presidential contender Hillary Clinton, may have been dangled a tasty carrot by the Obama folks.
That might have been a good enough reason for Wes Clark to send out an email this morning:
Wes Clark is doing his part to elect our next President. He has been traveling across Iowa. He appeared in a TV ad for Hillary Clinton that was broadcast across Iowa during the past week. He's making calls, rallying Hillary's supporters, and now, it's time to get the Clark community's grassroots involved.

...Want to be on the ground campaigning with General Clark in Iowa? Mark your calendars for December 27 and 28.

I guess that "tipsville" was short-lived. I can't imagine whom Barack Obama would have as his VP choice (any thoughts?), but a Clinton-Clark ticket would be terrific.

Re: Clinton & Clark

Which part of that pairing is terrific?  A Hawk and a General.  Now that's a duo to warm the hearts of all good progressives.

Re: Clinton & Clark
I couldn't agree more.  I already have major concerns about Hillary controlling the military.  Put that together with a General as VP and I see no way at all for the civilians to reassert control.  If she wins, it would be bad enough to put Clark in as SecDef, which I have always expected.
My other concern in this area is that our nominee will feel compelled to nominate a Republican as SecDef, my worst nightmare.  Well, other than a Republican winning the Pres.

I Like Clinton/Clark Too

For Obama, I'm inclined to go with Biden simply because he's got a lot of "foreign policy experience" as it's defined by the media and I think Obama needs someone who can make the experience argument for him (whether Biden would be willing to make that argument is another issue).

Although I admit that, while I'm not a Biden supporter, this entire election is going to be a giant letdown if there's not a debate between Biden and Guiliani.  I don't really expect either to be their party's nominee, but damn that would be quite a show.

Re: I Like Clinton/Clark Too

The problem with Biden, is he opens up the possibility for Castle to run for his senate seat in 2008.  A "moderate" Republican with high approvals who's been holding a Democrat leaning house seat for awhile.  I don't think we could take the loss of Biden's seat and still reach 60.  That's my biggest fear.  I would recommend him for Senate Majority leader, since we know Harry Reid can't do a shit's worth a job of it.

Re: I Like Clinton/Clark Too

the Gov would appoint Beau Biden - who as attty gen
HAS WON STATEWIDE and Castle in my opinion, wouldnt run against him, unless he was ready to actually retire.

Delaware is odd in that way.

The one House seat is a big deal.  Equal to the Senate back home.

He was the Gov remember.

Re: I Like Clinton/Clark Too

That's assuming Biden ran for re-election even if he was on the VP ticket, which isn't something you should assume.

Re: I Like Clinton/Clark Too

if he gave up the job in say - june - and the gov appointed Beau - it would be a bigg leg up.

beau would win.

or joe could pull a joe l. - and run for both.

Oy Bama'

So Obama is trying to get the experienced Wes Clark to become his VP if he wins the nomination? I guess experience DOES matter.

Reread that. I'll help you.

Sneed hears rumbles retired Gen. Wesley Clark, a major supporter of Dem presidential contender Hillary Clinton, may have been dangled a tasty carrot by the Obama folks.

Means past tense, tried.  Not is.

Re: Reread that. I'll help you.

Past tense as in when?  Six Months ago?  Yesterday?

Re: Reread that. I'll help you.

More from the Article:

* * The carrot? The possibility of becoming a vice presidential candidate if Clark decided to switch his allegiance. Phone calls placed to Obama staff since last Friday have yet to be returned.

Sometime after he endorsed her.  So I guess this means assuming he doesn't switch, which I doubt would happen, Clark isn't in the running for Obama's VP.  Clearly, if Clark is a VP choice, I think that means they aren't considering Edwards since he has only been an elected official for 1 term.  Looking for someone with experience.

Clinton/Biden is my dream combo, but boy -

Just not as funny!

Re: Clinton & Clark

I'd love Obama to pick Webb- but I just don't see it.

I could see Obama snagging Clark as well.

I'd actually like Clinton to have Richardson-

And we're forgetting the slightly problematic issue of Clark and CLinton having the same home state.  Now there's no constitutional issue because since Clinton represents NY no one can legally claim they're both from Arkansas.  On the other hand, it probably guarantees Arkansas for the Dems even with Huckabee as nominee- a pick-up.

Re: Clinton & Clark

I think Clinton/Clark is the most likely combination.

I really think Obama/Daschle is a strong possibility.  I don't think he would choose another US Senator as his running mate.

I think Edwards would need a female or black running mate.

Clark would be a GREAT V.P. for any Democrat

Going with the flow, I personally like Clark as V.P. with any of the leading Democratic candidates.  The figurehead, with a man who has dedicated his life to the military as his running mate.

Personally, although it aint ever going to happen, I like Gore accompanied by either Obama or Edwards.  This would harken back to the 90's when America was prosperous and moral, packaged with the future visions of either Obama or Edwards.

On a side note, I would absolutely vote for Hillary if she is our candidate.  Any Democrat is better than any Repug, especially this year when the Repug candidates are all pandering to the lowest common denominator and religious zealots.

You said "Personally, although it aint ever going to happen, I like Gore accompanied by either Obama or Edwards.  This would harken back to the 90's when America was prosperous and moral, packaged with the future visions of either Obama or Edwards."

the 90's were moral? Last I checked it was in the 90's when all these accounting frauds in corporate america ran wild under the Clinton administration? It was when Al Gore uttered the enduring phrase" NO controlling legal authority"....are you nuts?

Gore, Clinton and Clinton are the Kings and Queens of political greed and immorality.......they are the last thing we need.....Give us Edwards or Obama as second choice....but the last thing I want is Hillary or Al "The sky is falling" Gore...

Re: Clinton & Clark

Gen. Clark would have been a perfect VP for Obama.  But since that's obviously not a possibility, I think he ought to choose someone from outside DC to reinforce the "change" theme--assuming he were to get the Dem nomination.  Maybe Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana possibly.

Hillary would be stupid not to take Wes Clark as her Veep.  Seems like a slam-dunk to me.

And Edwards, I'm thinking someone like Va. Sen. Jim Webb would be a nice fit.  Can't go wrong with two southern populists.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sneed's Reliability

Is somewhere around that of Bob Novak.

She actually has good crime contacts so if she is predicting an indictment, that's something to listen to.  Her political scoops tend towards, some random jackass on sports radio said....

Agreed.  We too easily believe these rumors that can easily be planted by someone with a hidden agenda.

Re: Clinton & Clark

I have to agree on the Obama-Daschle possibility given the close association between the two. A Clinton-Clark ticket would be likely if she secured the nomination.

Having said that, I think Wes Clark as VP would be by far the best choice for either Obama or Clinton (other than perhaps Ted Strickland).

Daschle

Does it make sense to choose someone for VP who went down in defeat in their last election?  Would the media brand Daschle as a loser?

by Will Graham 2007-12-14 11:28AM | 0 recs
Re: Daschle

Someone mentioned Daschle as a more likely a chief of staff, which I thought was a pretty good prediction.

by Piuma 2007-12-14 11:47AM | 0 recs
Re: Daschle

I'm guessing he will be a part of the cabinet one way or another.  Chief of Staff wouldn't be a bad guess.  Clearly he isn't up front for the VP pick if they are offering it to Clark.

Mark Penn would be my pick.

Cuz if Edwards ain't the nominee, we DO need to have SOME eye candy.

Re: Clinton & Clark

I tend to think that Obama will pick someone from outside of Washington, and I think a woman would be a strong possibility, such as Kathleen Sebelius or Janet Napolitano.  Other possibilities: Schweitzer, Richardson, Clark, Jane Harman (I hope not), Martin O'Malley, Tim Kaine, or Mike Easley.

Re: Clinton & Clark

As far as Obama's VP, I think that they'll avoid picking anyone who could be interepreted as serving as a Cheney-style "eminence grise." If they go for a n inside the beltway quantity, it'll be someone with a reputation as being a reformer, or someone who could plausibly affirm a national unity message. Otherwise, I see them grabbing a young-ish governor.

My sense of the top possibilities:

  • Inside the beltway

    • Sen. James Webb - national security reformer

    • Sen. Evan Bayh - unity-crat

    • Sen. Sherrod Brown - economic reformer

    • Sen. Ken Salazar

  • Outside the Beltway

    • Gov. Mark Warner - youngish governor who could push a unity message

    • Gov. Brian Schweitzer - youngish governor who could effectively push a change message

    • Gov. Chet Culver - youngish governor from a swing state

Clinton/Clark?

Now wouldn't that be interesting if Huckabee wins the GOP nomination--would he pick another Razorback Stater to make it an all-Arkansas race?

As for Obama, if he wins, I think that he picks one of the following:

Biden--foreign policy experience and "gravitas".
Dodd--domestic policy experience and constitutional "gravitas".
Edwards--the populist, progressive and "bubba" vote.
Napolitano--immigration experience, western & female vote.
Mitchell--establishmentarian, experience, overall "gravitas".
Richardson--foreign policy & overall experience, Hispanic & western vote.

Whoever he picks, though, it's obviously going to have to be someone who helps make up for what are likely to be seen as his biggest weaknesses in the general among swing voters, namely his race, name and heritage, relative lack of national and foreign policy experience, being a northerner, and his perceived liberalism (even if it's not entirely deserved). I'd go with Biden if I had to choose, with Richardson being a close second (although either might prefer cabinet positions instead, especially SoS).

Re: Clinton & Clark

I went to a Clinton fundraiser in town hall in NYC. Clark and Clinton spent time answering questions. They looked and acted terrific together.

As for Obama, i think any of these would be fine...

Gov. Kaine
Sen. Webb

Re: Clinton & Clark

Has anyone mentioned Sen. Bill Nelson as a choice?

-  Southern

  •  Florida (yeah, but still truly "Southern")
  •  Astronaut (coolness factor)

I'm not saying I like the idea, but I was suprised that it wasn't mentioned on the board.
