OH-05: Election Results Thread

Polls are now closed in OH-05. Results will be updated HERE.

Also we may get live reports from HQ where they're watching local TV coverage.

Swing State Project has a handy chart of baseline numbers for how each county performed in 2006 when Robin Weirauch won 43% of the vote.

Update [2007-12-11 19:49:47 by Todd Beeton]:OK, they're taking their sweet time. Anyone care to make some predictions?

<Update [2007-12-11 22:6:52 by Todd Beeton]: Results are trickling, and I do mean trickling in.

With 79.13% precincts reporting:

Latta (R): 56.05%
Weirauch (D): 43.77 %

And by the way, check out this sweet interactive election returns map.

Update [2007-12-11 22:2:52 by Todd Beeton]:The AP has officially called it for Latta. Good effort everyone and thanks to all the volunteers on the ground and of course, Robin. If there's a takeaway, it's that it's going to take outspending us 2 to 1 to keep Democratic challengers to 2006 levels and we all know they just don't have that kind of money. We made them blow a huge wad of cash this time around.

my prediction

i think the race will be around 50-50 breaking for weirauch.  if you've read about latta's last couple days and the gop vibes on this race, youd be expecting them to lose here.

Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

Probably doesn't matter.  According to ODB

Wood County, the most populous in the district and the most Democratic, has counted about 70% of its precincts and the unofficial results are about 55% for Bob Latta (R) and 45% for Robin Weirauch (D).

Although the counting is not over, this looks very, very bad for Weirauch.

Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

unfortunately, it doesn't look like we win this ... the final result will be better than 2006 but still likely along the lines of 55R - 45D (unless a miracle happens in Wood or Lucas Co.)

nevertheless, it's still a win for us -- a 10 pt. margin in a district that went for Bush by 22 pts.

in the Massachusetts special, Ogonowski only got 45 % I think, and that district actually wasn't as Democratic as OH-5 is Republican.

AND the Repugs have spent 16% of their House money here !

i think we spent a little over half of what the Repugs did (something like 240K vs. Repugs 410K), but we had over 10x as much as they did (over 29 million to Repugs 2.6 mil.), so only approx. 1% of Dem. House money was spent (as opposed to 16% for Repugs !)

Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

Sigh.  Even without Wood and Huron county returns in yet, I'd say things look bad.

According to Sean over at Swing State project, we needed to run even in Sandusky Co. and win Seneca 55 to 45.  They're both at about 46/53.  Unless RW had a huge turnout of base voters in Wood Co., I'd say we're sunk.  <sigh>

At least we made the NRCC spend big on this race.  Even so, that's cold comfort.

Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

Ohio is a tough nut to crack, I guess. We've come surprisingly close in red districts a number of times (the one with Jean Schmidt, for example), but it's hard to get over the top. Even in the 2006 wave, we only picked up one seat, and that was the one held by the uber-corrupt Bob Ney, who waited until only a few days before the election to officially resign.

At least statewide races are looking better there...

Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

Having been through this myself, I with to thank Robin and her supporters in Ohio for all they did to make this a race. We need more people like Robin to step up to the plate and work on making every Dem look forward to voting for their candidate instead of voting against someone.

Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

What I can't understand is how badly we lost Wood County. Its now looking like RW will barely improve over last year.

by js noble 2007-12-11 04:30PM | 0 recs
Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

Wood is Latta's base, so don't be too surprised.  Robin still did better than last time in most (though not all) other parts of the dist.

the key thing to remember here is, if we perform this well in other less-Repug. districts in 2008 (10 % Repug margin in this election compared to 22.5% margin for Bush over Kerry) then we will do well -- we lost, but this is still like a 12.5% Dem. improvement over the norm ...

OH-5: 61.0 Bush 38.5 Kerry

looking just at Ohio districts we're targeting (or may target) next year:

OH-1: 50.5 Bush 49.5 Kerry
OH-14: 52.6 Bush 47.1 Kerry
OH-15: 50.3 Bush 49.6 Kerry
OH-16: 53.8 Bush 45.8 Kerry

by silver spring 2007-12-11 04:45PM | 0 recs
Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

That explains the Wood vote. Thanks. I was just hoping Robin would improve over last year. I guess incumbency doesn't really confer an advantage for the GOP anymore.

Also, Latta is considered a moderate, right?

by js noble 2007-12-11 04:52PM | 0 recs
Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

yes ... a "moderate" Repug. (relative to other Repugs I guess; by my standards kind of like fascist-lite)

by silver spring 2007-12-11 04:57PM | 0 recs
Re: OH-05: Election Results Thread

looks like final is 57R-43D (almost exactly like 2006) ... still, an 8 or 9 point margin over Kerry's numbers ... such a margin would still make the above-mentioned districts very competitive (OH-16, more on the margin, but we have a very good candidate running there) ... also remember that both Paul Hackett & Vic Wulsin got 48/49% in a district that was several points more Repug than OH-5, so Ohio is still very, very competitive, esp. with the candidates we have running ...

Cold comfort?

Just for some recent historical context, I think that its important for us to remember that, in the last seven years, there have been a sum total of 25 special elections to the U.S. House of Representatives, 3 of which have shifted from one party to the other - Randy Forbes (R) winning the Virginia 4th in 2001, and Dems Stephanie Herseth and Ben Chandler winning respectively in South Dakota and the Kentucky 6th in 2004.  (This assuming the GOP retains both seats tonight).  As has been said over and over and over, its all about the expectations game, and barring some REALLY extraordinary circumstances, we should not predict the results of these special elections to be so dramatically divergent from the disrict's regular voting patterns. Moreover, the results generally shouldn't be viewed in any context beyond district-wide politics, and the strengths and weaknesses of individual candidates.

thanks

The whole point of this comment is that, absent a tidal wave like 1994 or 2006, districts vote their composition.  This district is DESIGNED by Repukeliscum (Taft, Petro, Blackwell) to vote Repukeliscum.

Lots of Work Ahead

OK folks. You know what this means: we have lots of work ahead of us if we are going to win in 2008. And not just mobilizing our forces -- we have to persuade a lot of people to our side. And for 2012, we need some good redistricting, so that means we need to change the state legislature in 2008 too.

Some quick mourning, then back to organizing!
