Update [2007-11-7 20:20:49 by Todd Beeton]: By the way, have you seen Fred Thompson's new ad? It's actually pretty good. The guy definitely connects when a script and a camera are involved, it's that whole in person off the cuff thing where he needs some work. He gets into creepy territory when he starts in on "our rights come from God, not the government" but I think it's probably exactly what Republican voters want to hear. What I like most about this ad though is that it doesn't feel so much like a political ad as it does a movie trailer, with the music and the constantly moving camera; and then at the end, it announces the title: "Fred Thompson: President." It's not saying he's running for president or asking you to consider him for president, it just states flatly: "Fred Thompson: President." Subtle, there, Freddie.

I can't express my utter disgust for 'Turkey Neck' Thomson fully in just words.

A crushing boot to his dessicated goolies is what he needs.

My rights come from the Constitution and woe be unto him or her who would take them from me.

Exactly.  The whole premise of a democratic government is that the authority of the government comes from the people.  Didn't Lincoln say that we fought the Civil war so that "...Government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not vanish from the earth?"  Of course, fundie types can't possibly accept that, so they cling to their fantasy that the US is a "Christian nation."  

When I hear Freddy say that our rights come from God it makes my nads shrivel.  Frank Zappa was right.  We are living in a fascist theocracy.

I'm pretty certain the Declaration of Independence does, in fact, say that our rights come from God.  Not specifically the Christian God, obviously!

I think the point is that if a document is the source of your rights, then a document can take them away.  Consider the Ninth Amendment, and how it specifically says there are rights you have even though they're not spelled out in the Constitution.

1.  Clearly touting the fact that Ronald Reagan is the Republican Jesus Christ of the 20th Century.  Can't have a commercial without him.  Smooth Move Freddy.  

2.  "A government that doesn't tax or regulate us to death"

Of course he couldn't be refering to the gross overspending by Republicans, or to the Republican driven wiretapping bill.  

Common sense conservatie principles.  Denial, overspending, and xenophobia.  

Love it.

That commercial left me totally cold, with my only feeling a creeping, clammy sense of disgust and revulsion.

It's just so phony. Thompson looks like a cheap actor delivering inferior lines by a two-bit writer. His earnest delivery of second-rate political pablum almost made it seem more canned than normal.

So you could mark me down as a "no" on that one ...

I thought it was a good ad as well, but I didn't like the music. BriVT calls it "phony" - yeah, I thought the music made it feel phony, but change the soundtrack and it's effective.

Haunting flute? No. The melody is somewhat smiliar, but the style reminds me more of Frodo Baggins.

He's overacting.

He keeps bobbing his head up and down WAY TOO MUCH to (over)emphasize the mostly meaningless stuff he's saying.  It makes him look even weirder.  He's kindof got a bizarre face already, so the bizarre head-movements are not helping him.

The music is decent until the last two seconds, when it goes way over the top.

The head motions, the voice (I kept expecting him to say "by cracky" or something similar), the stuff he said, the lines around the mouth, all screamed "Old" to me.

He came across like somebody's grandfather, ranting about what's wrong with the country, how things were better when he was a kid, and how if he was President, by gum, he'd show 'em.

This is the GOP as the "Get Off my lawn Party."

I guess I don't really feel one way or the other about the commercial, although I will say this--Fred Thompson's America is white... exclusively so.    For all I know, this is run-of-the-mill for campaign commercials, but it certainly doesn't look like any America I know, or want to know.

Any thoughts on Willey woman's book/allegations?

I see another woman --- this one named Kathleen Willey -- is coming forth with a book/allegations claiming BILL CLINTON groped/fondled/kissed and otherwise made unsolicited sexual advances on her 12 years ago in the White House --- I saw this woman on TV tonight and she seemed believable --- how does this relate to Hillary Clinton?  I would like to see the media look into the question of what level of involvement she had in providing COVER for her husband's sexually inappropriate behavior?  This stuff needs to come out NOW...The way I see it THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY VAN VET NOW or REGRET LATER --- I am about 99.4% certain the Republicans will make an issue of Hillary "covering" for her husband's sexual misbehavior when/if she is nominated....Paula Jones, Gennifer Flowers, Juanita Broderick, Monica Lewinsky ... Methinks Gerald and Betty Ford were pretty accurate in their assessment's of Bill's "problem" / addiction...

If you make up enough shit about someone, and throw enough allegations someone's way, WHY YES, THEY THEN HAVE BAGGAGE.  It's total BS, the Clintons have been hunted since they day they became a threat.  Clinton had the highest approval ratings of any president of the 20th century when he left office.  He was popular, dammit -- a fact the Republicans are doing their best to hide.
