Fundraising numbers in Q3

Today we should start to get a solid indicator of how much money was raised in Q3 by the candidates. First out was Bill Richardson:

Bill Richardson raised about $5.2 million for his Democratic presidential bid in the past three months, bringing his total fundraising for the year to more than $18 million, his campaign said Sunday.

The First Read is reporting that:

John Edwards will raise at least $7 million.

As for Clinton and Obama, the WaPost is saying that both camps will raise more than $17 million. NBC News sources indicate both will surpass $20 million (Clinton aides said they expected to bank between $17 million and $19 million).

On the Republican side:

Fred Thompson will raise at least $8 million.

Mitt Romney is expected to raise about $15 million.

Rudy Giuliani's take was expected to run about $10 million.

Anything else?

Update [2007-10-1 13:51:28 by Todd Beeton]:Barack Obama reportedly raised $19 million for the primary in Q3. Total for the year is almost $80 million.

We won't know this for 15 days. I'm sure they will announce a topline figure today and nothing else until they file their report.

IN addition to the breakdown of primary vs general, attention should be paid to spending by the front-runners. They've been spending moderately to heavily and the overall COH figure will be important.

republicans are sitting on their checkbooks...

waiting for the fields to clear, according to what i've heard. the staggering figure (to me) was their goal -- $400M for the nominee in primary money (all to be spent before the convention). i'd be interested to see how they do that, but i'm not prone to underestimate republicans, who have a vastly superior volunteer organizational structure afaict...

What do you think of the threat to back a third candidate if Guiliani gets the nod?

It makes it seem like their traditional volunteer force organization structure is showing some potential cracks.

Edwards has had pretty strong fundraising this year. Clinton and Obama have just done a better job at it. The Republicans seem to be in bad shape overall.

Whatever Hillary raises, it won't be enough

according to pundits and some people here. They'll say something sexist like, "she needed a couple million more to make up for that awful cackle."

HRC will be fine. I'm just shocked that JRE hasn't raised more and he's losing his IA mojo vis-a-vis polls. Sad.

There hasn't been any poll with a decent likely voter screen coming out of Iowa in ages. The recent newsweek and arg polls aren't worth a warm bucket of spit.

HRC is competent but she is also calculating.

The cackle was calculated. Her vote to go to war in Iraq was calculated. So much--if not everything-- she does and says is calculated.

Her calculated laugh suggests a lack of spontaneity and is a metaphor for her numerous politically motivated decisions and votes.

Its the calculation that is offensive and non-progressive and unbecoming. She is competent but her leadership lacks heart and it lacks honesty.

Edwards small donors

Edwards money looks good. You have to consider the fact that 90% of his donors give $100 or less. The people giving are regular Americans and not lobbyists, corporate executives, billionaires, etc. When I decide who to vote for, I always look at the donors of the candidates. Money talks in this day of age. I believe the donors of a candidates tells me what values the candidate has and where they stand on the issues. As Mike Gravel said in a debate, if you want to know what kind of person they are then follow the money.

If 90% of his donors give $100 or less and he raises 42% of his money from maxed out donors then he doesn't have that many donors. And I would love to know exactly how does the difference between someone giving $20 and someone giving $2300 tell you anything about what values the person has and where they stand on the issue. This statement is prejudice of the highest order.

If you want to break it down by class, I would say the wealthy have much better values and stand on environmental issues than the poor. Is that the type of sentiment that gets us anywhere?

Two Interesting Repulbican Numbers

There are two interesting results for the Rs I am looking forward to seeing. First, how much of Romney's money is self-financed. To date, his advantage over Guliani is due to self financing. Second, how much does Huckabee raise. I think he is perfectly positioned to win the R nomination...close second in Iowa, "better then expected" in NH, win in SC.

Clearly, the big question mark though is still fund raising. Because of his results in the Iowas straw poll and the resulting good press, his quarter should show a strong improvement over the first two. Just how much better, if any, will tell if he has enough to really compete hard in the early states.

It is true Obama would have collected $16 million to $17 million without Oprah's mega-fundraiser for him this quarter.

The number is still damn impressive, but you have to admit it's a sharp decline from his record $33 million in Q2.

John McCain will raise about $5 million for the quarter but still show well over $2 million in debt, according to two sources familiar with the internal tally.

Though far below what rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are expected to report, the $5 million figure is better than what some in the McCain orbit had fretted about a few weeks ago. The Arizonan enjoyed a mini-surge of contributions following the solid media buzz he earned during his "No Surrender" tour last month.

Edwards $7 million. His campaign claims 75,000 new donors this quarter, not far away from Obama's juggernaut.

Those headcounts are getting very silly. Think about one minute, it's pretty much worthless on a grand scale. Clinton had a rally yesterday, sold out 3,000 tickets, so she could claim 3,000 new donors from one event. It has proved nothing when you put this on the scale of the number of voters.
