George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

Yesterday George Allen brought in one of the Republican Party's big guns, John McCain, for an event billed as a show of veterans' support for Allen's reelection bid. No doubt this event was seen as an opportunity to divert public attention away from the story brewing since late last week regarding a (possible) racial slur the Senator threw at a supporter of Democrat Jim Webb of South Asian descent. However, Senator McCain had a bit of trouble staying on message, apparently, as Jim Hodges reports for the Newport News Daily Press.

Maybe somebody should have clued in Sen. John McCain.

First, Sen. George Allen, R-Va., wound up a few dozen veterans with a "we win, they lose, there's no substitute victory" strategy for Iraq, then McCain followed with a joke about a monkey flying an airplane.

McCain, R-Ariz., was in town Wednesday night to lure some votes for his Republican colleague, Allen, who has heard enough monkey jokes lately. Especially since a report was unearthed that he used "macaca" in reference to S.R. Sidarth, a worker of Indian descendent for the campaign of Allen's Democratic opponent, Jim Webb.

Macaca is a genus of monkey.

As stunning as McCain's poor taste and apparent dearth of comedic talent were (particularly given Jon Stewart's penchant for swooning over the Arizona Senator), there was another aspect of the event that bodes even less well for both McCain and Allen: no one cared enough about either of them to show up.

The evening was billed as a "veterans for Allen" rally, but the hotel's conference room was less than half-filled, even after a phone push for a larger turnout. Veterans came from as far away as Colonial Heights, but their numbers were little greater than the reporters and camera people who were there.

As it was, the rally started 10 minutes late and finished more than 20 minute early, according to a campaign worker's schedule. [emphasis added]

It's August in Virginia. It's extremely warm and muggy. People are loath to get out of the air conditioning, even to walk to and from their car on the way to a political event. But neither George Allen nor John McCain -- who are considered two of the leading contenders for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination (and perhaps the two leading contenders) -- could bring in more supporters to an event than media? Even after "a phone push for a larger turnout"? If that doesn't say something about the current slate of Republican White House contenders and the current state of the George Allen reelection campaign, I don't know what does.

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

No new polling since the "macaca" incident.  Also, the latest poll several weeks ago - BEFORE macaca - had Allen under 50% re-elect, which is very dangerous territory for an incumbent.  I can't wait until the next set of polls comes out!

I don't know what you are talking about.  The weather here has been beautiful for the past week or so.  I'm in northern Virginia, but I just looked up the weather down in Newport News and it looks like it was pretty similar.  So I don't think it was the weather that kept people away.

Okay, fair enough.  Didn't read the right whitespace between the lines, I guess.

Shooting, um, monkeys in a barrel

What? They couldn't find veterans in NORFOLK?  That's like saying you can't find Irishmen in Boston.

Not a good sign for Felix or McCain.

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

Possible slur? I'd say probable to definite slur. His mother is a French-Colonial chased out of Northern Africa in the late nineteen-fifties. So, Allen just happens to use a racial epithet that his mother was likely to have used as a child? My, what a coincidence. Sort of like how Ronald Reagan kicked off his presidential campaign by speaking in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Yeah, a coincidence.

Wanna by a bridge, John?

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

Yeah the weather played no rule, i assure you. the low number of supporters is probably more a result of the disillusionment that many Vets are feeling with the GOP. These groups, as well as active Military, make up a huge portion of voters in Virginia, mostly concentrated in the Hampton Roads area. Webb has the resume and message to bring these voters home, he just needs the money to reach them.

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

maybe the monkey joke was a calculated move by mcCain. tossing an anchor to a conservative 2008 primary rival?

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

The McCain making a monkey joke stood out for me, too.  I'm actually surprised that Allen wanted McCain because of 2008.  That is, of course, assuming Allen wins reelection.  Perhaps his internals look bad...

Allen's horse manure

Good post.  That the Allen campaign had their man apologize to and make fun of the people he insulted--in the same day--is astounding.

According to a Rasmussen poll (whatever that's worth), a big issue among Virginia voters is the whole idea of politicians in Washington being crooked and dishonest.

Hopefully, this incident has knocked Allen off his high horse in the minds of the voters:

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

For another take on this story, check out JABBS' piece.

(snip)

"In no way was it meant to demean him, and I'm sorry if he was offended," Allen said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press.

Why is this a non-apology? Break down the sentence:

"In no way was it meant to demean him ..." equals "I did nothing wrong."

"and I'm sorry if he was offended" equals "He's the one with a problem."

It's similar to the non-apology provided last month by the spokesman for another potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Re: George Allen Continues to Be on Defense

It is not that hot in VA.  Temps were in the mid 80s.  This is at or slightly below normal.  Meteorologist here.   But you probably made that comment in jest :)

Check out the latest Rasmussen Poll when you have a chance(after Allen's slur).  Within margin of error for first time. Allen below 50%. Go Webb.  Get out there and talk and raise that dough!
