Mid-Day Open thread

  • A federal judge ruled today that the GOP cannot replace Tom DeLay on the ballot. Although the Republicans have pledged to appeal the decision, this is a major victory for former Congressman Nick Lampson, the Democratic nominee in the district.
  • Joe Biden: "You CANNOT go into a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts without an Indian accent." (watch the excruciating video here)
  • The Hill's Jonathan E. Kaplan does a nice write-up of the Netroots endorsement process in Wednesday's paper.
  • The state of New Jersey is back in business.
  • The Lamont-Lieberman debate is coming up in just over an hour. Catch it at 7 PM Eastern/4 PM Pacific on either C-SPAN or MSNBC.

Consider this an open thread...

not excruciating

Just like what I say, when we go out west, we stay in the Pakistani Hotel Chain.

In parts of the west, all the old hotels are owned by indians or pakis.  Most of them are Patels.  It's the family business.

Biden was saying a POSITIVE thing about entrapreneurial Indians.

So NJ has a budget deal.  The major package is a raise in the sales tax to use to cut property taxes.  If Corzine werent a multimillionaire, you would think he's a rethug.  Lets raise taxes on the poor and middleclass and cut a tax that hits the wealthiest the hardest. Heaven forbid, that we raise income taxes on the rich. Why that would be socialism or even morally correct.

But the wealthy spend more money, increasing their contribution to New Jersey's coffers.  I am glad Corzine was able to strike a deal with the recalcitrant Assembley.  Not only does it reveal his strong leadership skills; the press created an image of unity and resolution under Corzine.  This will benefit Corzine in 2009 and Menendez in November.  We should congratulate Corzine for his strong leadership on the New Jersey budget.

Am I the only one who thinks

that all this maneuvering by the Texas Dems could end up getting DeLay re-elected?

Not that that would be a bad thing, necessarily, since he might be more dangerous as a lobbyist then as a Congresscritter.

Re: Am I the only one who thinks

Maybe you are the only one who thinks that.

I mean, at this point, deLay is about the most unelectable Republican they could run.  Some random Republican Sugarland City Councilman that nobody ever heard of would get more votes than deLay would.

I realize I'm a pessimist,

but the nice thing about it is that we're so rarely surprised.

It seems like incumbency and the usual spend-and-smear campaigning could overcome what the Reeps have never stopped portraying as a groundless partisan indictment -- and now the Texas Dems are making themselves the aggressors, "forcing" him to run again after he's already taken his last bow. This is certainly how it will be portrayed by the Reeps.

Even if he would just resign and leave an open seat, as Johnny suggests, wouldn't the Reeps rather have another shot at taking an open seat next year than run against a Dem incumbent in 2008? Won't they now go all-out to destroy Lampson? We know how effective that can be.

Anyway, enough doom and gloom. I just can't help but sound the foreboding note.

Re: Am I the only one who thinks

even if he were somehow to win (re-)election, he'd probably just pull a Newt and resign (again), triggering a special election in early '07.

Re: not excruciating

not to mention his use of the offensive slang term "Paki".

Re: Mid-Day Open thread

It can't be said often enough: Joe Biden is an empty-headed, blow-bagging, gum-flapping narcissistic moron.

Have any of you ever been to a dunkin donuts or seven eleven in Delaware or for that matter a wawa and some gas stations.  They really are all run by Indians here.

That said I could only cringe when I heard my Senior Senator say something that inapt.
