Time To Hit the Campaign Trail

Chris Bowers for State Democratic Committee

I've posted on blogs, sent out emails with all the necessary tools to every political activist I know in Philly, and gone over a basic strategy with Kevin. Now, with the election on Tuesday, it is time for me to hit the campaign trail.

Tonight, as my first campaign event, I will be attending the Young Philly Politics Progressive Election Weekend Kickoff. It will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the Khyber (upstairs), 56 S. 2nd St, in Old City. See you there.

Tomorrow morning, I will be attending the West Philly Neighborhood Networks canvassing of super likely voters. That will be held at the Green Line Café, which is at 43rd and Baltimore, starting at 10am. See you there as well.

In the meantime, I am off on a trip to make 750 fliers for the campaign (I may need to make more later on). This afternoon, I will be making a preliminary literature drop. I will also be purchasing 300 pens to give out on Election Day. Kevin is working on our stamps that people can use in the voting booth. Tomorrow, he will be phone-baking every committeeperson we know in the district.

With our improvised campaign in full swing, I hope you will not find in presumptuous of me to briefly hold out my hand for campaign donations. All of the materials I described above will run us around $850 (the stamps are most of the cost, but they are necessary for a write-in campaign). Kevin and I will both donate our $50 committeeperson stipend for Election Day. I am more than happy to throw in half of the rest, $375, but I do not have the deepest pockets in the world (and Kevin certainly does not). So, that leaves us with $375 to make up. I would love it if you could chip in a little toward that goal. You can send money via PayPal to: christopher_j_bowers@yahoo.com.

Anything you can give helps, even if it is only $10. While our target is $375, anything we raise today beyond that amount will be donated to Anne Dicker, another local netroots activist, who is running for state representative in Philly.

Am I nervous? Oh yeah. Am I excited? Oh yeah. This is a thoroughly improvised campaign, but I believe we are going to win it. The silent revolution is gaining force, and I have to say that riding the wave is quite a thrill. We are going to change the party, and I'll be on the inside, blogging the whole thing.

Update: I am online here in the copy center while my fliers print. I checked my PayPal, and you guys have sent me $273 so far, just $102 short of our goal. Thank so you so much!

Update 2: $431! We hit the goal, with $56 left over for Anne's campaign. Thank you so much! All further donations will go to Anne, who deserves every penny.

Re: Time To Hit the Campaign Trail

Good Luck Chris --- and guys and girls --- this is an easy spot for our money to meet our mouth, and our feet to hit the road.  Let's help one of our own out.

Re: Time To Hit the Campaign Trail

What?  You're too good for $2,100 donations?

Chris, I think what you are doing is so important, and impressive. Good luck

If I still lived in Philly I would surely vote for you!

P.S. - will be in Philly tomorrow night for my 10th yr Penn reunion.  Will you be out campaigning somewhere?

Yeah, I'll be all over University City. That's where I live.

Re: telephoning
While, I'm sure there are a few folks you wouldn't
mind "phone-baking", I think you meant "phone-banking". :)

The one thing that you can always count on as a blogger is that your readers are there to corret your mistakes. :-)

Re: telephoning

I make my fair share of typos and normally I wouldn't post a "correction". It just made me laugh and I had to comment. :)

Please post copies of your fliers online
A district 8 local just wrote me to ask me more about your platform and linking to online fliers would be the ideal response. Thanks! Is 100 votes all you need to get the position or is this some sort of primary or qualifying round?

no money, but maybe a few votes

I'm skating the edge of broke these days (grassroots organizing doesn't pay very well!) but I talked to and emailed everyone I could think of that I know in Philly.  One's a Penn student who said she'd write the college Democrats.  Hopefully I got you at least 2 or 3 more of those 100 votes you need.  Good luck!

Good luck!

I emailed Nate about your campaign. He's working with the Murphy campaign this summer, but I'm sure he'll speak to any Penn Dems who may be staying in Philly over the summer.
