Nedmentum

Rumor has it that a high level Connecticut staffer with 25 years of experience in Connecticut local and union politics and field organizing is coming on staff to the Lamont campaign.  Established Democratic operatives in Connecticut are afraid of Lieberman, and afraid of change.  This kind of makes sense, because the existing weakened party structure in CT is still the only party structure in the state.  They haven't seen a challenge to this structure in a long time and are afraid of what it might bring.  It will only bring life and vibrancy, but they don't know that.

If established operatives are moving away to Lamont, it means that a real debate can finally happen.

Re: Nedmentum

Is there any information on when this is going to happen?

Re: Nedmentum

Next week most likely.

Re: Nedmentum

I'm really not a wet-blanket type, but I do have a sober question:

What did we learn from Ciro?

What are we going to do better this time?

Re: Nedmentum

(30 seconds later)...  Here's one thing: I'm gonna recommend Ned to the PPF at http://www.progressivepatriotsfund.com/p age/s/vote

It'd be pretty interesting (and a little out of character -- he prefers to wait out primaries) to get a Feingold endorsement for Lamont.

Re: Nedmentum

Very good question.  I think it deserves its own post, but here are some preliminary thoughts:

1) Make sure we have someone on the ground so we can watch the race up close.

  1. Check into the credentials of the staff.
  2. Make sure the campaign strategy, GOTV plan, and paid media strategy are modern and effective considering the resources of the campaign.

Re: Nedmentum

I would add a fourth:

4.  Early money - the problem with the money infusion with Ciro is that it was late and not nearly as effective as it could have been when early.  Cuellar, though an effective early voting program, already had an insurmountable amount votes in the bank before election day to win.

Re: Nedmentum

If it seems like I'm pushing you Matt, it's only because you have 400x more readers than I do.  But the CT primary is less than 5 months out.

Set monthly goals.  Engage the community.  Exceed the goals.  Win the election.

Disprove the assertion that we suck at X, where X is a crucial part of winning an election.

The community needs the experience for '08.  I say this as someone who's gonna fight you tooth an nail in the '08 primaries.  Go Russ!

What makes you think I'm against Russ?

Re: Nedmentum

Mea culpa -- tonight is my "Get drunk and watch old episodes of West Wing night."  My wires got switched and I confused your position with Jerome's participation in Forward Together PAC.

An argument on free trade, death penalty, three-strikes, etc. completed the (erroneous) argument.

Start getting "our guy" known by the voters sooner for one thing. The second thing has already been going on for a long time even with help from "Old Joe" himself, and that is making Joe's betayals to the Democratic Party known to the voters also. Cuellar hides in the shadows like a cockroach while he helps Bush, but Lieberbum shouts it from the rooftops every chanch he gets. And the more complaints he recieves about it, the more defiant about it he gets.

Re: Nedmentum

Is it time to consider a state-wide mailing list?  District level blogs?  Fliers?  Embossed pens?  Meetup.com meetings?  Door knocking campaigns?  My reading of the CFR's says this is cool if the dollar amount spent per person stays under $1K.

To what degree have we in the blogosphere mobilized on the ground?  Should we wait for the campaign to come up with these ideas?

I don't ask this to assign blame, merely to question if we're using all the resources we have at hand.

What are we going to tell ourselves if we lose this one?  It's gonna sting bad.

Less than 5 months left.  What would we do differently if we could go back in time and have another 5 months on Alito?

Re: Nedmentum

There is REAL Nedmentum here on the ground in CT. I am on my Town Democratic Committee and I talk to a lot of other Town Chairs. EVERYONE is fed up with Lieberman. But yet the folks from the State party keep coming to us and telling us to support Joe. I think there is going to be quite an upset at the State Convention on May 20.

Re: Nedmentum

Isn't there a primary?  How does candidate selection work?

Can Republicans vote in the Dem primary?  I think that was a big issue in TX-28.

Re: Nedmentum

Can Republicans vote in the Dem primary?

Not in CT thank god. Republicans love Lieberbum more than Democrats do, (75%). Is that any surprise?

Re: Nedmentum

To answer your question, there are two ways for Ned to gain access to the ballot.  The first is the peitition process (obtain the signatures of 1% of all registered dems--approx 6,500 signatures).  The second is to obtain 15% of the delegates at the Convention.  There are a total of 1607 delegates.  Thus, Ned would need 241 to reach 15%.
