Head Spinning Thread

I'm pretty sick today. I don think I have the energy for a full post, but here is a round-up thread:
  • David NYC runs down Charlie Wilson's options in OH-06 now that he didn't mage to get the 50 signatures necessary to be on the ballot for the Democratic primary in the district. Frankly, I feel that if he can't win the primary as a write-in candidate now, then he has no business being the Democratic nominee in the district. A mistake of this level speaks of massive campaign incompetence that almost certainly would lead to his defeat in November. If he doesn't win the Democratic primary as a write-in, no one should step aside for this joker now.

  • Over at FireDogLake, Jane has an update on the netroots NSA action. Check it out and participate.

  • South Dakota has outlawed abortion. Obviously, this is an extremely dangerous time for women. I would also like to point out that it is not necessarily an action that jibes with the populace of South Dakota. According to Survey USA, South Dakota splits 47-49 "pro-life-pro-choice." As such, I wonder if this law, approved by a 2-1 margin in the South Dakota Senate, will have any repercussions for South Dakota lawmakers. Quite a few of them are clearly out of step with their constituents on this issue.

  • Speaking of choice, Jane also has a good post up on how NOW seems to get it whereas NARAL and Planned Parenthood just don't. NOW recognizes that the crucial vote on Alito was not the floor vote, but rather the vote on cloture. As such, NOW is ready to hold Senators like Lieberman accountable for voting for cloture and then voting "no" on the meaningless floor vote. It seems very likely that they will endorse Ned Lamont over Lieberman in the primary. You can volunteer for Ned Lamont here, and contribute to Ned Lamont here.

  • Speaking of netroots candidates, Ciro Rodriguez was on Majority Report last night. You can listen to the audio here. You can also listen to him on Agonist Radio here.

In other Ciro news, ColoDem reports that the insurance industry has stepped into the race on behalf of Cuellar. As the insurance industry and Club for Growth continue to support Cuellar, a series of Demcorats have stpped up to support Ciro: U.S. Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA), Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Congressman Charles Gonzales (D-TX), Congressman Gene Greene (D-TX), Congressman Raul M. Grijalva (D-AZ), Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA), Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), Congressman John P. Murtha (D-PA), Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Congressman David R. Obey (D-WI), Congressman Solomon Ortiz (D-TX), Congressman Edward Pastor (D-AZ), Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY), Congressman Sylvester Reyes (D-TX), Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-CA), Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (D-CA), Congressman Ted Strickland (D-OH), and Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA). I know which set of supporters I would rather be associated with.

    Volunteer for Ciro Rodriguez.
    Donate to Ciro Rodriguez.
That's about all I can muster for right now. I'll have a new Senate forecast up either later tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll have my first Governor's forecast up by Monday.

number of abortion clinics in South Dakota:

2. (as of 2000)

as I've said before, the anti-abortion crowd is already the de facto winner in this battle. overturning Roe v. Wade will just be the last nail in the coffin.

NARAL stance still unexplained

The idea that NARAL did not understand the relative significance of a cloture vote and vote on confirmation of Alito simply beggars belief!

If a miserable pleb like me understands, the bright girls (and boys) responsible for lobbying Congress at NARAL knew fine well.

Ignoring the significance can only have been an act of deliberate policy on NARAL's part.

Why would they have done this?

I can only think that they do not want to embarrass 'moderate' Dems who felt they had to rim Alito, but who might do NARAL a bit of good on some other, less controversial, piece of business.

I think it does to be wised up on these things, rather than look the other way or hope for the best!

Also, did NOW in their lobbying materials ask senators to vote against cloture on Alito, or just to vote against confirmation?

If this is a late conversion by them, similar questions arise as in the case of NARAL.

Re: Head Spinning Thread

Since you are just north of here (MD) I am interested in how you will call the Governor's race.  Good Luck.

Aside from the Dem primary (Duncan and O'Malley) which I think will go down to the wire the general isn't going to be easy for Dems no matter what poll you rely on.  Nobody thought he (Erlich) would win the first time.

Re: Head Spinning Thread

I think that the reason Ehrilich won the first time is because of a weak Democrat running agenst him. O'malley and Duncan aren't weak and Ehrilch isn't all that popular.

Re: Head Spinning Thread

You are right KKT was weak but Ehrlich has a base and he is a pretty boy and he is an incumbant.  And altho folks here will howl, he hasn't done anything dramatically horrible...if you are on the fence no reason to vote against him kind of logic.

some of the polls I have seen show duncan pulling more votes from erhlich than MOM--which is interesting.

Re: Head Spinning Thread

Feel better Chris.  I think it is terrible public policy to have abortion outlawed but I have often thought if it did happen that the Dems would reap huge political benefits.  The Dems got a huge political boost the last time abortion was under seige in the early 90s.  People vote issues that get their blood boiling either out of anger or deep seated belief.

A lot of moderate, suburban women (and some men) currently vote against their views on choice because they figure it is legal so they can care more about taxes or terrorism or whatever issue.  However, take abortion rights away and you will see this change.

I hope Roe v Wade does not get overturned because of the bad policy implications but if it does it could end up a wedge issue in our favor for a change.

The voters of South Dakota could overturn the law

Through a referendum, if they chose; that's why it's there, after all - to undo bad laws.  The question is whether anyone will bother to try.

Feel better Chris. Remember, the way you feel now is much better than you felt after Bush beat Kerry... ;-)

Casey's situation looks

reasonable after seeing that surveyusa poll on abortion.  His is the most anti-choice blue state in the country.  PA is W-E-I-R-D.

Speaking of PA

Lois Murphy (PA-06) posted on dailykos about her ethic pledge, which she challenged Jim Gerlach, her Republican opponent, to take:

Re: Head Spinning Thread

With all the media attention focus on the South Dakota legislation that passed a bill to outlaw abortions, this boondoggle bill could work to the Democrats advantage; and be our wedge issue in '06.

Yes, by nudging those lazy voters who normally don't vote in off-year elections to get their fannies to the polls.

You wanna see a real gender difference...?  Just you wait until November.
