House 2008: Tim Murphy Comes Under Federal Investigation

It looks like Pennsylvania 18, a rather competitive congressional district that George W. Bush carried with 51 percent of the vote in 2000 and 54 percent in 54, should be on the map in 2008 as its Representative, Republican Tim Murphy, comes under federal investigation. KDKA's Andy Sheehan has the scoop.

A federal investigation is underway after allegations surfaced against US Rep. Tim Murphy.

Sources tell KDKA federal agents have begun interviewing former Murphy staffers on whether they did political work for the congressman on government time.

As a refresher, here is the original report from KDKA:

Back when this story first broke during the waning moments of the 2006 campaign, Democrats were ill-prepared to fully capitalize on it. While there was a Democratic candidate running in the race -- Chad Kluko -- so Murphy was not one of the 10 unopposed Republican Congressmen this year, Kluko was never able to gain much traction in the race. Murphy was not targeted from the outset of the campaign, little outside money went into the race from the Democratic side and as of the last three weeks of the campaign Kluko had only spent $80,000 to Murphy's $1.45 million. With numbers like these it's no wonder that Kluko only managed to get within 16 points of Murphy on election day.

But 2008 should be different. As noted above, PA-18 is a relatvely competitive district with the slightest of Republican leans (in the range of 2-3 PVI points). What's more, the trend in both Pennsylvania and throughout the Northeast is one moving away from the Republicans towards the Democrats, with House and Senate seats flipping to the Democrats in the state as well as the lower chamber of the state legislature. With these regional and statewide trends in place, the FBI investigation into Rep. Murphy's activities could help tip the balance in the Democrats' favor. Now, the Democratic Party needs to take the time and effort to find the right candidate for the district so that they can put Pennsylvania's 18th district in the blue for the 111th Congress.

Yeah and great

I hope Barbara Hafer is pretty happy now, as she was probably going to run against Tim Murphy here, but opted out... She would have won too, and probably big.

Oh well...

Re: Yeah and great

It's not too late--with the investigation flaring up, this definitely puts Murphy under more of a cloud than he was a month ago.

Clinton won this area pretty handily in the '90s.  As I said on SSP the other day, this district should be in our crosshairs for sure.

Re: Yeah and great

That's true, and you know, recruiting Hafer into this race would be an almost for sure pick up. I mean, Murphy versus a strong and popular Challenger (not to mention a former Republican). In the event that Murphy retires, Hafer would still be the favorite to pick up the seat. A win-win situation, perhaps.

I don't want Hafer

She declared she was running for Senate, and then wussed out; she then declared she was running for this seat and wussed out, citing potential damage to her consulting work.  And she has only been a Democrat for a few years of her long political career.

How about a real Democrat instead?

Re: Add PA-18 to the list...

Also add OH-16 to the list... Ralph Regula is almost for certain going to retire, and this district isn't very Republican at all.

MN-06

MN-06 is a very conservative district, both culturally and economically. Unfortunately, I think their new Representative, Michelle Bachmann will continue to be able to frame her positions and votes as advancing the needs and priorities of the district.

That being said, obviously we've learned that it's a good idea to challenge every district. I think El Tinklenberg, who lost this year's primary following the belated entry of Patty Wettering, who lost but performed well in the district in 2004. Tinklenberg is a pro-life (in MN-06, if not necessary, at least extremely helpful) former minister, who was once the mayor of Blaine, one of the biggest cities in this primarily suburban/exurban district. Tinklenberg also worked in the Ventura Administration, a possible innoculation against typical partisan labeling (even though the Ventura reign wasn't exactly a study in competent governing).

We also have some DFLers (Minnesotan for Dems) from the district in the state legislature. Don't know if we've got any potential contenders there, but at least we've got something of a bench.
