LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

"Ourselves Alone"
The third battle's got a great dish on the New Orleans Flag, and why you're seeing so many of them lately. I'll tell you why, because we are no longer Americans. We are New Orleanians.

The Third Battle of New Orleans

List of over 100 Louisiana BlogsWe have expectations of the newly elected Democratic majority, and so do the people of New Orleans. You'll find little discussion about the battle for Majority Leader on various NOLA blogs, but plenty of talk about Democratic pre-election promises for a post-Katrina Marshall plan. Less Reed/Levin, more Domenici/Landrieu. Indeed, the party made some big promises to the people of the Gulf Coast, and you can hear the constant refrain of "stay on their asses" coming from all corners of the local blogging community.

During the Hackett special election, the popular OH-2 blog did the heavy lifting and continues to hold Jean Schmidt accountable after August 2, 2005. In Connecticut, DumpJoe.com started long before any of us had ever heard of some guy named Ned Lamont, and sites like My Left Nutmeg and Connecticut Local Politics will continue to cover the local landscape long after we're done talking about him.

I guess the purpose of this post is to simply introduce you to some of the folks that are making it happen, online and offline, in New Orleans. I've spent the last few days reading a bunch of the local blogs and the closeness of the community is pretty amazing, if unsurprising given what they've been through together. To the right of most of my posts you'll find a bit of a local blogroll that I'll be updating daily. Today, for example, I added a link to Ashley Morris (one of the more articulate, entertaining and passionate bloggers in NOLA) and Tim's Nameless Blog. Tim lives in one of those FEMA trailers we've all heard about with his "Darling Wife" and Precious Daughter. I urge you to check both of them out if you get a chance. Tomorrow, I'll be taking a tour of some of the devastated areas and getting a primer on the local political scene from Oyster at Your Right Hand Thief and a few other local bloggers to be named later. And really, who better to give me a tour than a blogger who immediately blasted Stoller when MyDD announced they were sending me down here. That's my kind of guy ... a little more Stoller bashing could only serve to help everyone involved. Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention "Rising Tide," a blogger conference organized by the local community during August of 2006. The image linked above the blogroll will take you to the site for the conference. Pretty cool stuff.

I hope to have my first substantive post up on the LA-2 race later this evening. I'm about to head off to a press conference in Jefferson Parish where Derrick Shepherd, the third place finisher in the November election, will be endorsing the incumbent Congressman William Jefferson. The sentiment around here is that many of the endorsements for Jefferson from former candidates are because they expect to see him indicted and removed from office (voluntarily or involuntarily) before the 2008 elections. If Carter is elected, many would be kissing goodbye their shot at a congressional seat for many years to come. If Jefferson is re-elected, well, that leaves the door open for their own personal political ambitions. That's not to say that every endorsement of Jefferson is motivated by ambition, but it's a topic I hope to explore with the local bloggers tomorrow over lunch.

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

Sorry, I should be more specific.  MR Gloomy Pants link works.  The one in your sidebar does not.

LA-2
Tim,
I don't think it's been mentioned yet, and I haven't read all of the blogs you've linked to.  What's the general attitude towards the LA-2 race in the NOLA blogosphere?  Are they all behind Carter?

Re: LA-2

Most are extremely unenthusiastic about both candidates.  One is the scion of a local political machine who brings.. um.. questionable credentials to the office, while the other is... well.. Dollar Bill.  Adrastos breaks it down pretty well right here.

So who was the inspiring candidate?

"The sentiment around here is that many of the endorsements for Jefferson from former candidates are because they expect to see him indicted and removed from office (voluntarily or involuntarily) before the 2008 elections."

Two Jefferson associates have already pled guilty to charges and are co-operating with ongoing investigations. Brent Pfeffer 'pled guilty to charges of aiding and abetting bribery of a public official and conspiracy' and Vernon Jackson 'admitted to bribery of a public official and conspiracy to bribe a public official during a plea hearing in U.S. District Court' (source: Wikipedia). It's not just smoke engulfing William Jefferson, it's fire. The silver lining in all of this public corruption is the demonstrated professionalism in ranks of the FBI and US Attorney. These guys really are good.

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

I'll be very interested to hear what Shepherd has to say. The split is also regional, Tim. The West Bank of the river is largely in Jefferson Parish and they've felt ignored for years by Dollar Bill and other Orleans Parish pols. They see Shepherd as their guy and would rather not see Carter elected. She's also running a bad campaign thus far.

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

Can a Jefferson endorsement be turned on it's head?  How do Sheppard's supporters feel about the endorsement?  ok, the one's that attend will be gung ho but what about the other voter's?  Wonder if Carter can slingshot this into grabbing the voter's Jefferson was hoping for by an endorsement?

Well, if you're gonna throw out Irish...

The "ourselves alone" sentiment definitely strikes a nerve.  So many people of New Orleans must truly feel alone still, abandoned.  It's amazing to me that New Orleans wasn't more of a national campaign issue this year...we've just moved on to the next fascinating story, which disgustingly seems to be Brittney Spears' divorce.

So if you're going to throw out potentially incendiary Irish terms, I'll just toss this one on the pile to the people of New Orleans: Tiocfaidh ár lá.

Like Sinn Fein, it's come to be associated with the militant Irish republican movement, but the literal meaning is this:  Our Day Will Come.  It was used a lot by peaceful Irish civil rights activists in the early 70's, around the same time that nonviolent marchers in the North of Ireland also took up singing "We Shall Overcome".

Tiocfaidh ár lá, New Orleans.  Your day will come.

Thanks to all the local bloggers in New Orleans and to national bloggers who are helping to amplify their story and remind us not to forget.

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein
An irish title, that's appropriate. Maybe it reminds people of the irishmen who came to New  Orleans and "the estimated 8,000 to 20,000 Irish immigrants who died while constructing the New Basin Canal through the snake and alligator infested swamps north of the city between 1832 and 1836."

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

What you write about is a very important topic, but I wish you would have not used the term Sinn Fein in the title.

As someone who supports the Ulster Unionists it brings up too many bad memories.  Many members of Sinn Fein either apologized for or enabled terrorists for a long time.

Unfortunately the IRA's propaganda appartus has been very successful at portraying them as victims, when the truth is that in most cases the IRA are nothing but cold blooded thugs.

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

It's a reference to a book chapter and idea by Ronnie Virgets, a New Orleans author, not 'the troubles'.

Here's NOLA blogger Ashley Morris discussing Virgets:

"On Tuesday night, I went to a book signing and reading by Ronnie to promote his new book, Lost Bread. I guess if he called it Pain Perdu, non New Orleanians would think it was an S&M guide or something.

Listen to him talk about The Point in this podcast. [http://neworleanspodcasting.com/RonnieVi rgetsThePoint.html]

He read from the book, and related his tale of the flood. It's the last chapter in the book, so go ahead and buy the damned thing. When I'm made King of New Orleans (wait, that's my kid), then I'll make Ronnie Virgets poet laureate.

I asked if he still smoked cigars, and he said not so much. Then I pulled out a 6 year old Cohiba Lancero, and he said he'd have to keep that one. When I was talking to him while he signed my book, I mentioned the Sinn Fein chapter in Say Cap, and his eyes lit up (even brighter than normal) as he remembered. He said "yeah, ourselves alone. I need to revisit that topic".

And he signed the book: To Ashley, Ourselves Alone.

Sinn Fein.

Re: LA-2 Blogs: Sinn Fein

Inspiring candidates? We don't have them in New Orleans. The whole campaign has involved picking the lesser of several evils and now we're down to two.

Btw, folks, Karen Carter is open to privatizing social security and doesn't think Bush lied his way into war. She's also the daughter of a classic NOLA machine pol and is only rhetorically a reformer. We have a truly terrible choice.

Here's a link to a post I wrote after a televised debate:
