Lieberman Flip-Flops on Hastert Investigation

Last Sunday, here's Joe Lieberman on the Hastert cover-up, which he used to push his ethics legislation.

These reports demand a full, independent investigation to determine exactly how the House leadership responded to the concerns that were raised about Congressman Foley's contacts with young pages....

Either way, this awful incident points out a major flaw in our ethics system -- there is in fact no independent body in Congress to investigate allegations of ethical misconduct by Members and to eliminate the inherent conflict of interest in cases like this.

And today, here's Joe Lieberman on the Hastert cover-up.

I am also deeply disturbed by the reports suggesting that some in the House leadership ignored or even covered up Congressman Foley's predatory behavior.  This case demands a full, immediate, and independent investigation, which is underway in the bipartisan House Ethics Committee.

So from Friday to today, suddenly Congress developped the ability to investigate allegations of ethical misconduct.

UPDATE: I should add that on Friday, Lieberman on a local Fox affiliate supported Hastert's preferred route, which was an overhaul of the page program led by Republican ally and former FBI Director Freeh's. That overhaul never got off the ground because of objections from Democrats.

UPDATE AGAIN: The House Ethics Committee is a joke. They apparently won't even put Hastert under subpoena.

Bipartisan?
More like a Hastert whitewash comittee.
I recall some members being removed for their views on Delay awhile back.
Handpicked replacements by Hastert for loyalty.

None of this stuff about Lieberman matters, does it?  I mean, if the papers in Connecticut aren't covering it, but a few liberal bloggers with a bunch of liberal readers do, what difference does it make?  I know that Lieberman is a self-righteous blowhard--a fool to be honest--but lots of other people don't really see it that way or just don't really care.  Unless Lamont starts changing people's minds this guy, I'll just mark this one down in my Idiot's Guide to Joe Lieberman and put it back under the bed.

Re: Lieberman Flip-Flops on Hastert Investigation

Why would they give Hastert a supboena when they can give him a latte and muffin instead?

The two Republicans put on this "ethics" subcommittee have both been recipients of money from Hastert in the past.  And one is in the district right next to Hastert.

It's a joke.  Whatever this ethics crew is doing has more in common with a ham sandwich than an investigation.

It's like putting the dog in charge of guarding the dog food--or like putting Mark Foley in charge of guarding the pages.

Re: Lieberman Flip-Flops on Hastert Investigation

The problem with this race all along is Lieberman's base number is very high. I remember posting that on many sites on the night of the primary, looking to November. Nothing Lieberman says or doesn't say is going to severely impact that base number, as long as he doesn't betray his Republican base. Weird to write that, but it's the reality.

And it's why the deflections to looking at how the race stood at this point in '88 are wonderfully irrelevant. We've never seen anything threatening a major party candidate with 5 or 6 percent in a senate race. I evaluate sports every day via Excel and once in a while you come across an example with nothing similar in spreadsheets dating to the early '90s, if not far beyond that. This senate race is similar in resembling none before it.

Lamont needs to sway a chunk of independents and for Schlesinger to somehow rescue Republicans. Otherwise, this race remains in neutral.

I did see a relevant point in a Kos diary, that Lieberman is increasingly dependent on voters who may not be motivated, the Republicans and right leaning independents coming out to support him and not their own candidate. Plus the gov race is non-competitive. It made me wonder if Lamont wouldn't have been better off minus the three pivotal House races. The GOP will be motivated in those districts and the advertising spillover could impact other areas.

Darcy Burner debate Tuesday

This will be fun! Reichert is a bad speaker / debater /tongue-tied talker.  The only reason he would put himself through this is, oops, a dead heat race. Darcy's ads have gotten tougher. I'm going to try to get to Bellevue tomorrow night. Also, Doc Hastings, Ethics Cmte. is from WA state. It would be so sweet if WA went 100% Dem to Congress. Maria's numbers are looking good - no surprise there.

Darcy Burner will debate Dave Reichert in their first public debate on Tuesday, October 10th. The debate is sponsored by the Seattle Times and is open to the public. There is no charge for admission.
WHO: Darcy Burner, Democrat vs. Republican Rep. Dave Reichert.
WHAT: Seattle Times debate
WHEN: Tuesday, October 10th. Debate begins at 7pm; doors open at 6:30pm. Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Re: Lieberman Flip-Flops on Hastert Investigation

Who really gives a rat's ass?  The amount of time you guys are spending on "gotcha Sen. Lieberman" antics is nauseating.  Do you think one single person is going to base his/her vote on whether Joe Lieberman said something on Friday and modified it on Monday because you caught it on tape?  Please.  Stick to bigger differences that matter to voters if you want to take yourself seriously.  No wonder the Lamont campaign is "blogging down" - you're reaching.
